Chapter 8 Making Liangpi (cold skin noodles)

Everyone was puzzled as they watched Chen Xian do these things with such ease and grace.

Cuihua: Dad, how come you're better at kneading dough than I am?

Chen Dazhu: Doesn't Dad not even know how to cook?

Chen Erzhu's expression was strange: Who did Dad learn this from? Is my dad still my dad?

Chen Sanniu's saliva was almost dripping to the ground: Ah, those are white flour steamed buns! If only I could have a bite!

Chen Si Niu: Dad, can you make money with this stuff?

Su Liniang and Su Shuangshuang exchanged a glance, both filled with astonishment.

Su Liniang: Husband, you are indeed not the kind of uncouth country bumpkin who talks nonsense. Although I was a little confused before, wouldn't it have been better to use the money for white flour to buy buckwheat flour?

Seeing Chen Xian's actions now, the flames of hope began to burn fiercely.

Everyone was greatly encouraged.

The first attempt went well; it was a successful replica.

Chen Xian: "This is called liangpi (cold skin noodles). If you make it thinner, one jin (500g) can make about five bowls."

Looking at the crystal-clear membrane, everyone was puzzled.

It looks so transparent, it looks delicious!

Chen Xian crushed the chili peppers to make a green pepper sauce.

Shred the cucumber, add some water and stir, and a simple bowl of cold noodles is ready.

Several people took turns trying it.

"Ah, it's so delicious, so cool and refreshing. It would be so comforting to have a bowl of this on a hot day."

"It has a chewy texture and a spicy aroma; it's simply a rare delicacy."

Chen Erzhu: "Dad, when will you learn to make this?"

Chen Xian remained calm. "My teacher at school back then said I wasn't smart enough and wasn't cut out for studying. He told me I should learn something early and have a skill to make a living."

If you don't believe me, why don't you ask the Master?

The old man had passed away seven or eight years ago.

You unfilial son, you doubt your father all the time.

Cuihua: "Dad, how many coins do you plan to sell this for?"

Chen Xian tentatively answered, stroking his chin, "Five coins?"

ah?

Su Liniang whispered, "Husband, isn't five coins a bit expensive? I'm afraid the people in town won't buy it."

Chen Erzhu: "Auntie is right, we should lower the price a bit."

Chen Xian frowned: "A pound of noodles can make five bowls, which is twenty-five coins. That's equivalent to earning eighteen coins, plus our family's cucumbers, salt, and chili peppers."

“We also need to keep people on the street to sell, which takes up labor costs, as they can’t work at home.”

The Chen family is right; they are all poor laborers who can't even earn twenty coins a day.

Chen Xian: "Then three coins a bowl, five coins two bowls."

Finally, the Chen family voted unanimously. It was passed without question.

Si Niu, in a flurry of activity, grabbed Chen Dazhu and said, "Brother, grab the hoe, there's no time, come with me up the mountain."

Chen Xian suddenly laughed and said, "Fourth Sister is really a clever girl."

Chen Erzhu chuckled, "I'll come too."

As he spoke, he picked up the grappling hook.

Su Shuangshuang was completely bewildered, barely paying attention the whole time, and tugged at Su Liniang's clothes, "Sister, what words are they saying? I don't understand."

Su Liniang chuckled: "You just ate some cold noodles. Besides the noodles being delicious and chewy, there was one seasoning that was especially good. What was it?"

Su Shuangshuang: "The cucumber is crisp and refreshing."

"Guess again?"

"The tangy and slightly bitter flavor of balsamic vinegar is appetizing."

"continue?"

"I know, it's chili peppers. I'm so smart."

"..."

That evening, the Chen family children dug up the only remaining chili pepper and Sichuan pepper trees by the roots and replanted them in the Chen family's yard.
