Chapter 9 Selling Cold Noodles

The pancake vendor even lowered his voice and whispered, "Since this is your first time setting up a stall, why don't you use smaller bowls and chopsticks? That way, it will look like you can serve more."

Chen Erzhu was also thinking it over, and whispered, "Dad, why don't we sell them for two coins a bowl? It's our first time setting up a stall, so let's get things going first?"

Chen Xian shook his head.

“Once the price is fixed in business, it’s best not to change it arbitrarily. Although everyone knows that you can make a profit if it costs three coins, if you voluntarily lower the price, it’s like telling people that you can still make a profit if you sell it for two coins. Nobody is stupid; they will think we are shrewd merchants.”

"We cannot lower the price."

Chen Erzhu stared intently at Chen Xian, as if he were seeing his own father for the first time.

When did Dad learn so many principles?

Chen Xian coughed and said, "This is all what my teacher taught me. There is a wealth of knowledge in books."

Don't ask, it's what the Master taught.

After more than half an hour, my throat was getting tired from shouting.

The pancake vendor shook his head, saying that if he didn't listen to his brother's advice, he would likely take many detours.

Just wait, not a single bowl will be sold.

Looking at the green peppers, Chen Xian suddenly had a bold idea.

He lowered his voice and whispered to Chen Lao Er.

Will this work?

"Give it a try."

Chen Erzhu shouted angrily, "Dad, you're biased! I told you long ago not to give all the secret recipe to my eldest brother, but you wouldn't listen. Now look what's happened! He kicked me out of the house, and now he's making me sell cold noodles on the street with you."

The sudden noise startled the onlookers.

Elderly people started to gather around, and even young people and children came to join in.

Seeing that the crowd had gathered, Chen Xian said in a hoarse voice, his voice filled with sobs, "This old man has such a hard life."

"What's going on? What's wrong with the old man selling cold noodles?"

Chen Xian started rambling on and on.

“My family lives in Chenjia Village. We have two sons and have been making a living selling liangpi (cold skin noodles) for generations. It’s a small business, mainly selling liangpi in the summer and autumn. My eldest son sells it in various villages, while I make it at home. Although it’s hard work, we’re just getting by.”

"But who knew that my eldest son would be lured by some good-for-nothing in the village and insist on opening a business in the county town. I disagreed with this, and my eldest son started arguing about dividing the family property."

"Later, my family's secret recipe was swindled away by a hooligan, and my eldest son also took a lot of money from home and was swindled away as well. He became depressed and stayed at home drunk and sleeping all day. He borrowed almost two hundred coins from the village. I had no choice but to go to the street and sell things with my second son."

He cried so hard that tears streamed down his face. In an unseen corner, Chen Xian held a tiny bit of chili pepper in his hand and squeezed some into his eyes, almost dying on the spot.

It's really spicy.

The old man selling sesame cakes stared in disbelief; they had just been chatting and laughing.

Among the onlookers was a sentimental young girl with red-rimmed eyes.

The elderly woman with the child wiped her eyes with her sleeve, and her grandson, seeing the adults crying, also cried a few times in response.

Standing on the outermost edge, Chen Dashui looked around in confusion. He had already finished purchasing everything and was just checking to see if there was anything else he could help with.

His large head was filled with doubt.

Upon seeing him, Chen Xian wiped his eyes and said eagerly, "Okay, brother, you want a bowl, right? Okay, I'll serve you a bowl. I'll add extra noodles to your first serving."

Chen Dashui was about to refuse when he suddenly realized something and laughed heartily: "Alright, alright, I'll try it."
