evening.
After Su Liniang and Cuihua finished cooking dinner together, they would occasionally stand at the door and look around.
San Niu and Si Niu took small hoes and kept scraping open the holes in the poplar trees around them!
As they went deeper, the excavation became larger and larger, and they actually saw something inside the cave with whitish skin, resembling a silkworm pupa.
It's obviously a smaller version of the climbing monkey, a local dialect term, and a lucky bean.
Its call is even sharper than a cicada's, and it makes the sound: "Lucky Bean! Lucky Bean!"
Moreover, when this creature sheds its outer skin and grows into an adult insect, it is often more alert and harder to catch than a cicada when it flies up to a tree!
The two joked around from time to time, and managed to catch quite a few lucky beans.
Summer is almost over.
The pheasant was gone very quickly.
Only Fu Dou, whose cry is the loudest, remains.
Dazhu watered the vegetable garden behind the house with the water from washing vegetables.
Erzhu took advantage of the time before lunch to flip through his books, as Mr. Zhou would be checking his memorization tomorrow.
Cuihua called out, "Aunt Li, let's eat."
Liniang nodded faintly, feeling empty inside.
Erzhu stood up and saw the two of them. He said softly, "Father is handling some matters in town. It's only been five days. I guess he'll be done soon."
Liniang turned her head and suddenly saw a few people coming from the village entrance.
As I rode my horse, the sky gradually darkened.
San Niu climbed up the locust tree by the door in a few steps. Her little eyes were first filled with doubt, then with surprise. She jumped down from the tree and shouted, "Daddy's back!"
His shout drew the attention of the entire Chen family.
As expected, it was Chen Xian riding a fast horse, followed by several attendants.
Chen Xian took a step and jumped off the horse, stepping into the stirrups.
San Niu yelled and charged like a bull, ramming into Chen Xian's abdomen.
"father!"
Chen Xian: "..."
Just as the waiters were about to get up and leave, Chen Xian called them back.
"Brothers, it's getting late. If we head back now, I reckon the city gates will be closed. If you don't mind, how about staying at the Chen family's old house for the night?"
Several people nodded.
Chen Xian gave an order to Da Zhu, who had rushed over.
He untied two oil paper bags from the burlap sack behind him and handed them to the group.
"In this rural area, the Chen family has not provided adequate hospitality; please forgive us."
The man replied, "Mr. Chen, you're too kind. My boss and Mr. Chen are close friends. You're too kind, Mr. Chen."
After taking the oil paper package, the three of them went to the old house with Dazhu, leading the horses and making do for the night.
Before long, Dazhu returned. The Chen family members sat on stools. On the table were freshly stir-fried green beans, and inside a covered dish were about ten white steamed buns and broad bean porridge.
"It smells so good."
Si Niu's little nose twitched.
Chen Xian opened the oil paper package.
The aroma immediately filled the air.
Braised pork knuckle, roast chicken, roast duck, stewed goose.
Then Erzhu took two packages to his uncle's house.
He then instructed Cuihua, Mr. Zhou from next door, and the Su brothers to take care of the three packages.
Have San Niu and Si Niu call Yang Xiaoshu, who lives in the pig farm dormitory, over.
The young man seemed a little awkward.
The Chen family ate their broad bean porridge with gusto, their mouths greasy with oil.
Erzhu: "Dad, how long will it take before we can set up a stall?"
"It'll be ready soon. I'll go buy some pigs tomorrow."
Yang Xiaoshu was happily gnawing on a chicken leg when he suddenly paused.
"Great, at least I can find something to do. Otherwise, it would be really embarrassing to eat for free at Uncle's house."
Erzhu: "Dad, you paid someone for a favor, but they didn't take it?"
"Yes, that's enough."
"Wouldn't that be a waste of money selling the local pigs? A pointless endeavor?"
"This is not...the same."
Then the Chen family started talking about other things.
For example, things related to my recent studies.
For example, Mr. Zhou changed the rules regarding the time of day for classes.
Mr. Zhou taught adults in the village to read and write for about two or three months.
He decided that the child would attend classes all day from Monday to Wednesday.
Thursday and Friday mornings are reserved for children's classes, while Thursday and Friday afternoons are reserved for villagers.
We are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Chen Xian chuckled. "Yes, Mr. Zhou is a human being. Even a donkey in a production team needs a rest."
"Mr. Zhou is always reliable, so just remember to study hard."
Li Niang: "Husband, shouldn't we consider buying a house in town?"
It's too tiring for you to travel back and forth like this.
If the weather is fine on a normal day, but it's windy and rainy, traveling back and forth is very tiring.
Chen Xian nodded.
The Chen family ancestral home must not be abandoned. One advantage of living in the countryside is that wild vegetables are everywhere, wild game is available in the mountains, and the Chen family has a factory.
Even if you feel the urge to urinate on the road, you can easily find a secluded spot to fertilize the land.
After dinner, the whole family took a shower and went to bed to rest.
Chen Xian, Liniang, and Shuangshuang lay flat on the bed.
Li Niang glanced at Chen Xian and saw that he was looking at the roof beam, seemingly lost in thought.
She whispered, "Husband! Hmm?"
"Um?"
"Won't the Gu family cause trouble for our family?"
Chen Xian put his arm around the other's warm, fair, and smooth shoulder and said calmly, "The Gu family is in complete chaos right now, and their shop is about to go out of business."
Li Niang pondered the meaning carefully.
Suddenly his expression turned somewhat serious, and his full lips moved slightly.
Even though Chen Xian didn't speak, she seemed to be able to feel the effort he had put in.
Looking at the unremarkable-looking man, who was almost a decade older than him, he showed no signs of aging.
The man had fair skin and showed none of the weariness or bitterness commonly seen in farmers.
