“Then, then you should go down the mountain and go home right away. Taking care of the child is the priority,” Ruru said cooperatively.
"Everyone says I'm up in the mountains and can't hear you. I'm not going home now; I'll wait until it gets dark." Xingxing climbed off the stool and sat down as steadily as a mountain.
Ruru stared at her for a while, and seeing that she really didn't intend to come and help, her eyes reddened and her lips pursed, looking like she was about to cry.
"I can't hear you even if you cry." Xingxing turned her head away and refused to look at her.
"...Fine, we'll stop playing house. Xingxing, come help me comfort him! Don't ignore me." Ruru sniffled pitifully.
Xingxing pursed her lips and tugged at the corners of her mouth, but quickly suppressed the curve. She didn't like playing house, but Ruru liked it and often dragged her to play house. If she didn't play with Ruru, Ruru would throw a little tantrum. Xingxing felt that as the older sister, she should give in to her younger sister, so in order to appease Ruru, she would play with her for a while.
Playing house is fine, but Xingxing likes to play hunting games in the mountains, while Ruru prefers to play games like taking care of dolls or getting married. It's so boring, and Xingxing loses patience after playing for a short while each time.
So when she heard Ruru say she wasn't going to play house anymore, she was happy and couldn't help but smile. However, she couldn't show it too obviously, otherwise Ruru would throw a tantrum.
Xingxing walked to the bedside and looked at the crying baby, feeling distressed. The baby was so chubby that she didn't dare to pick him up, afraid that she would drop him.
"What should we do? Why is he crying? We already changed his diaper. Is he hungry now?" Ruru asked helplessly, almost crying along with him.
"He's probably hungry, but we don't have anything to feed him. We can only wait for Auntie to come back." Xingxing blinked and gently patted the little boy's arm.
After waiting for a while, Zhao Guizhi still hadn't returned, and Xingxing became a little anxious. "I'll go call Mom over. Ruru, stay here and watch him. Don't let him run around."
Xingxing ran towards the door, and as soon as she opened it, she saw Zhao Guihua coming from next door. She had just fallen asleep and, in her half-awake state, heard the sound of a baby crying next door.
At first, she didn't realize what was happening, thinking it was a hotel guest with a child. But as the crying grew louder, she realized it was coming from next door. Thinking of the child she had found that day, Zhao Guihua jumped up, all sleepiness gone, and immediately got up to check on the child.
"Mom, you're awake! The little brother we found has been crying and crying. Is he hungry? You're here, so you can give him some water." Before, when the little guy cried, Zhao Guihua gave him water and he stopped crying, so Xingxing thought that giving him water would calm him down.
"Let's go inside and take a look." Zhao Guihua led Xingxing into the room.
"Auntie, you're here! Come and comfort him, I've been trying to soothe him but I can't." Ruru's face, which had been drooping as if she had seen a savior, immediately lit up with a faint smile.
Zhao Guihua picked up the child and tried to soothe him, pacing back and forth in the room. After a quarter of an hour, the child's crying gradually subsided, but he was still sobbing.
"Why did it take you so long, sister? Why are you taking so long to buy some food? Could you have run into trouble?" Zhao Guihua asked worriedly.
Just as she was about to take the child downstairs to check on him, she heard footsteps outside the door. Then she saw Zhao Guizhi push the door open and come in, carrying a tray with several bowls of food on it.
"The child must have been starving. The inn didn't have any food suitable for such a small child, so I bought some fine rice and rice flour from the innkeeper and went to the kitchen to cook it myself, which is why it took so long," Zhao Guizhi explained as she placed the tray on the table.
On the table were three large bowls: one filled with rice water, one with rice porridge, and one with an egg pancake.
“There’s still a while before dinner. I was worried that Xingxing and Ruru would be hungry, so I made some egg pancakes for them to have a little something to eat. You can have some too. I just ate two in the kitchen. Give me the child, I’ll feed him.”
Zhao Guizhi took the child and sat down at the table to feed him some rice porridge. The child was quite well-behaved, but seemed to be starving and swallowed it too quickly, choking on it and coughing in a babyish voice.
"Feed him slowly. Don't rush to feed him just because he's eager to eat." Zhao Guihua found her flustered and somewhat amusing.
"This child is quite easy to raise. He loves both rice water and rice cereal and isn't picky at all." Zhao Guizhi fed the child a spoonful of rice water followed by a spoonful of rice cereal, and the child ate with great relish.
After the baby finished eating, he didn't go to sleep right away. Instead, he looked at Zhao Guizhi and babbled in baby talk, even blowing a few bubbles. Zhao Guizhi felt a warm glow in her heart. She thought about how Chen Shunping's health was getting better and better, and how the two of them had become husband and wife last month.
She hopes to have her own child sometime next year, as cute and lovable as the little one in her arms. She is already in her twenties and will be thirty in two years. If she doesn't have a child in the next two years, she will be too old to have one later.
Zhou Laoda didn't return until dark. He could have returned earlier, but just as he was about to leave the yamen, the unconscious villain suddenly woke up. Despite being weak and having his feet burned, the villain jumped up and grabbed Zhou Laoda as soon as he woke up.
This man has incredibly sharp eyesight. Even though they barely met in that dark alley, he clearly saw Boss Zhou's face, grabbed him tightly, and wouldn't let go, insisting that he return the child to him.
"So this child is that person's young master, and he is the guard protecting the young master?" Zhao Guihua was relatively calm after seeing that Zhou Laoda was not injured.
Old Zhou sat at the table, drank a large bowl of water, and sighed, saying, "Yes, that man said they came from the capital. On the way, they were chased by their master's mortal enemy and then besieged by refugees, which is why they ended up in this state."
