The only one who seemed relaxed throughout the night was the boy who lay unconscious in the carriage. Last night, everyone fought with the men in black, and even when the tiger appeared and roared deafeningly, it didn't seem to wake him.
"This guy is sleeping too soundly. Playing dead was a good idea when he was in danger last night, but why is he still pretending to be dead with his eyes closed now?"
Zhou Erfu gave the boy lying in the middle a disdainful push. The carriage was originally quite spacious, but with one person lying in the middle, most of the space was taken up, making the carriage seem even more cramped.
Fu Ge and his friends couldn't straighten their legs; they had to keep them bent, which was very uncomfortable after a while. No wonder Zhou Erfu complained.
“Second Brother isn’t faking death, he’s too badly injured and unconscious,” Zhou Wufu reached out and touched the other’s forehead. “Oh no, he has a high fever.”
Fever is no joke; one wrong move and the person might not make it. Since we've already saved the person, we can't give up easily. Zhou Wufu has an injured arm, and any movement aggravates the wound, causing him to grimace in pain.
"Second brother, can you open the bundle for me? I'll take out a packet of fever-reducing medicine and feed it to him." Dafu and Sanfu were both seriously injured and were resting with their eyes closed inside the carriage, while only Erfu still had the energy to jump around.
Inside another carriage, Zhou Laoda, pale-faced, leaned against the carriage wall to rest, while Jingjing and Xiaoxiao nestled together, also taking a nap.
Candy stretched out her injured leg, while her uninjured leg was bent. She held Xingxing in her arms, and Xingxing nestled against her with her big, round eyes, which were clear as if she hadn't slept all night.
Zhao Guihua really wanted to get to Quanshui Prefecture in one go, but she knew it was impossible. Everyone was injured and couldn't withstand the bumpy ride. Even if they could, they wouldn't be able to reach the prefectural city within a day.
It was already broad daylight, but Zhao Guihua showed no sign of stopping. Zhou Sifu could only follow behind, as he was now truly exhausted and hungry.
"Hungry, Candy wants to eat, Candy is hungry, Star..." Candy looked at the Star pitifully.
Star was hungry too, but she hadn't said anything. Now, hearing Candy say she was hungry, she stood up, walked to the window, lifted the curtain, and looked around. She didn't see it here, so she went to the other window to look.
The image finally formed in her mind. She walked to the carriage door and said to Zhao Guihua, "Mother, turn left and walk along that path for half an hour. There's an abandoned village there. Let's rest there for a day."
Zhao Guihua replied in a hoarse voice, "Yes, Mother knows."
"Why did Mother go down that path? Did she take the wrong turn?" Zhou Sifu muttered to himself, trying to call out to his mother to stop her. "We should take the official road to get to the prefectural city."
But before he could speak, Xingxing's sweet little voice came over, "Fourth Brother, hurry up and catch up, let's go to the village ahead."
Half an hour later, they arrived at the abandoned village that Xingxing had mentioned, and found that this so-called village only had three households. The three thatched houses were adjacent to each other and were very dilapidated. One of them even had its roof blown off.
"Is this a village?" Zhou Sifu asked, frowning.
"Isn't this a village?" Xingxing was also puzzled. How many people would make up a village?
Zhao Guihua didn't speak. She pushed open the gate of one of the houses that didn't look so dilapidated. The wooden doors on both sides creaked under the weight and then collapsed.
"bump."
Everyone: "..."
The door collapsed, kicking up a cloud of dust. Zhao Guihua was choked and took a few steps back, coughing a few times while covering her nose. She waved one hand and went inside.
The house has a total of five rooms. The main room is in the middle, there is a room on the left, the kitchen is at the far end, and there are two rooms on the right. There is also a shed in the yard with some firewood in it.
"Perhaps these three families were forced to flee when the refugees arrived." Old Zhou clutched his chest and walked slowly. He had internal injuries and external injuries on his chest, but the wounds were relatively shallow.
"Never mind that for now. Sifu and I will tidy up the house a bit, and you can sit down and rest," Zhao Guihua said.
"Mom, Candy and I will cook." Xingxing volunteered.
"Can you cook with candy like this?" Zhao Guihua asked worriedly.
When Candy heard that she was asked to cook, she grinned from ear to ear. She jumped a few times in a one-legged stance to prove that she was alright. When her foot was cut, she retreated in time, and her shoes provided some protection, so only a large piece of flesh was cut off from her heel.
Last night, they glued the flesh back onto her heel and bandaged it with cloth. She's strong and healthy, so she can easily handle this minor injury.
Zhao Guihua and Zhou Sifu walked around the front and back of the house, and soon returned with two wooden buckets from the carriage. "There's a well in the backyard, I'll go fetch water."
"Wait," Zhou Laoda called out to her, "Wife, go over and take a closer look. Don't rush to draw water, in case the well isn't clean."
Zhao Guihua looked puzzled. "It's normal for it to be a little dirty after so long without anyone using it, right?"
"No, I meant to check if there are any dead people in the well. These days are too chaotic; who knows, someone might jump into the well to commit suicide." Seeing that she didn't understand, Zhou Laoda had to be more direct.
"Bang." Zhao Guihua's hand trembled, and the wooden bucket fell to the ground.
"Why are you so scared? I told you to take a look first. It might not be as bad as I said. Just in case, you know, drinking corpse water can make you sick..."
"Slap." Zhao Guihua slapped him on the forehead. "Say what you want, you can't say anything nice. You just say whatever sounds horrible. Aren't you disgusting?"
After scolding her, she took the bucket to the backyard, stood by the well and mentally prepared herself. The well cover was made of thick wooden planks. Zhao Guihua bent down and moved the well cover away. The sunlight was intense and shone directly into the well.
The well water was crystal clear. The well was only about two meters deep. There wasn't much debris in the well. There were some aquatic plants on the well walls, a few stones at the bottom, and then some sediment.
