Chapter 22 There is no doctor in the village

"Mom, Mom, where are you? Quick, let's go to the village entrance." Xingxing didn't even bother to put on her shoes before sliding off the kang (a heated brick bed) and running outside.

Dad got into a fight with someone, and they have to go help him.

Zhao Guihua was sitting under the eaves sewing clothes when she heard the commotion coming from the village entrance. She quickly put down her needlework.

"Xingxing, Mom is here. Don't be afraid. Let Dafu and the others stay with you. You all stay home and behave yourselves. Mom will go see what's going on." As she spoke, she called Zhou Dafu and the others over to take care of her younger sister.

He immediately turned around and went to the kitchen to get a wood-chopping knife. After coming out, he thought for a moment and then took a wooden stick as well. He couldn't be careless when refugees entered the village. Either the refugees would die or the villagers would die. He had to fight to the death.

Seeing her attitude, the quintuplets immediately objected and all clamored to help.

Xingxing also picked up a small stick and held it in her hand. With a serious little face, she said, "Xingxing also wants to help and drive the bad guys out. We can't let the refugees steal our meat buns and dried meat."

There's also honey, lots of dried flowers, and wild ginseng at home; we absolutely mustn't let anyone steal them.

“Oh dear, you all need to calm down and keep an eye on the food at home,” Zhao Guihua said, then stopped mid-sentence. “Never mind, I’ll stay home and guard it. It would be even worse if some refugees broke into our house.”

Between men and children, protecting children is more important.

"Mother, are you sure we don't need to go help? Will Father be in trouble?" Zhou Erfu rubbed his hands together, itching to rush out and fight.

Zhou Sifu was also eager to try, "Mom, why don't you let me and my second brother go? We're strong."

“No one is allowed to go. Refugees can be ruthless when they get angry. They can really kill people. It’s no joke.” After calming down, Zhao Guihua felt that staying at home to take care of the children was the wise thing to do.

Half an hour later, the sounds of fighting at the village entrance finally subsided. Zhao Guihua wanted to go out and see what was happening, but she was afraid that something might happen to her family if she left, so she held back in the end.

"Mother, I can run fast, should I go out and take a look?" Zhou Sifu was also anxious when he saw her anxious look.

"We can't go, let's wait a bit longer." In this situation, the refugees should have been driven away, since the villagers were prepared. However, we can't rule out the possibility that some refugees might sneak into the village when no one is looking, just waiting for an opportunity to launch a sneak attack.

It was because they had learned from their experience of fleeing from disaster that they were able to consider things so carefully.

Fifteen minutes later, a series of hurried footsteps came from outside, sounding like a number of people were coming. Zhao Guihua gripped her wood-chopping knife warily.

Xingxing followed behind her, also gripping the wooden stick tightly. The quintuplets were on high alert, each one ready to face the enemy.

"Bang bang."

"Guihua, open the door quickly! Your husband is injured!" the village chief shouted breathlessly.

Upon hearing the village chief's voice and learning that Zhou Laoda was injured, Zhao Guihua quickly opened the courtyard gate, asking with a worried expression, "How are you, Dad? Where are you hurt?"

The village chief carried Zhou Laoda on his back, with Zhou Fafu and Zhang Shugen beside him. After Zhou Laoda lay down on the bed, the village chief sat down on a stool with Zhou Fafu's help.

"Dafu, you guys quickly go and get some water for the village chief and the others." Seeing the three of them panting and unable to speak due to their dry mouths, Zhao Guihua hurriedly instructed the children to fetch water.

She then began to examine Zhou Laoda's injuries. She saw that Zhou Laoda had a long cut on his arm, and the wound on his calf was so deep that the bone was visible.

"How could you be so badly injured? These refugees were really ruthless." Zhao Guihua couldn't hold back her tears and they fell down on the spot.

Xingxing, standing to the side, saw that Zhou Laoda's arms and legs were bleeding and tears started flowing from his eyes. "Dad, are you in a lot of pain? Let me blow on them for you."

Old Zhou was in so much pain that he couldn't speak. He lay there with his eyes half-closed and his lips tightly pressed together.

Zhang Shugen drank a bowl of water and gradually recovered. He said angrily, "These refugees are too scary. They are really not afraid of death. They don't care that the thorns will hurt them. Their eyes are glowing green, and they keep trying to climb in."

"Didn't you stop the refugees when they were climbing the wall?" Zhao Guihua said.

Zhang Shugen: "How could we not stop them? We first used wooden sticks to beat them. Zhou Laosan and Zhou Laosi hit them the hardest, directly using hoes to smash their brains out. But the refugees were only stunned for a moment, and then they still climbed in regardless."

There were too many refugees, and they couldn't stop them all. Many were beaten to death or knocked unconscious against the thorn wall, and the thorns they planted collapsed under their weight, allowing the refugees outside to rush in all at once.

Fortunately, the people of Yegou Village were prepared in advance, and strong women came to help with hoes and kitchen knives. The refugees were emaciated and weak. Under normal circumstances, the refugees would fight to the death, and it would be difficult for the villagers to win.

But the villagers of Yegou Village are not ordinary people. They were once refugees who fled all the way from the north. What haven't they experienced along the way?

Those who survived to the end did so not simply by luck or chance; if they hadn't possessed a fierce determination to fight to the death, they would have perished on the escape route long ago.

So in the end, the people of Yegou Village killed many refugees. Some refugees finally realized they were afraid. They never expected the people of this village to be so abnormal, showing no mercy to the refugees and even more brutal than the refugees themselves.

“A tall and strong refugee snatched a hoe and tried to ambush the village chief. Your husband saw this and rushed over to fight him. Zhou Laoda is also a strong man, but he was beaten back by that man.”

Zhang Shugen gritted his teeth angrily and said, "That guy is obviously trained. He has some martial arts skills. Otherwise, our boss wouldn't have been so badly injured."

What he didn't say was that Zhou Laoda was hit on the ground with a hoe by that man, and his head was almost smashed. Fortunately, he and several other villagers rushed over in time and killed the man. Zhou Laoda narrowly escaped death.
