Dinner consisted of several wild rabbits hunted in the nearby mountains. As usual, two were roasted, and one was used to make meat porridge. Before they set off, Zhao Guihua made a lot of pancakes for them, but they didn't eat much of them.
That's the good thing about the South; even in winter, you can find some mountain produce in the mountains, making it easy to find food.
That night, Xingxing had a long dream. In the dream, she was even smaller than she was now, being carried around by several men in black. When she couldn't stand being suffocated and cried out, the men in black holding her would knock her unconscious with a single blow.
However, after she faints, the black-clad man who attacks her will inexplicably trip and fall, or be bitten by a wild beast that suddenly appears out of nowhere.
She suffered minor injuries repeatedly, but none of them were fatal. Later, the man in black seemed to realize something and dared not harm her anymore. Whenever he wanted to quiet her down, he would put a pill in her mouth, and she would sleep for a long time, so long that she would wake up crying out in hunger.
In her dream, she was also in a bad mood. She refused to eat anything that tasted bad, only ate white flour steamed buns, and only drank porridge without any bran. After finishing her meal, she wanted to eat fruit. If she wasn't given any, she would cry and run away. When the man in black tried to stop her, she would fight him.
The man in black assaulted her, and she sat on the ground crying because of the pain. Suddenly, the man in black who hit her was bitten by a spider that fell from the roof beam. He rolled on the ground in pain, which made her forget to continue crying and stare at the man in black.
For a long time, she was led around in the mountains and forests by men in black. Several times, the men in black tried to cut her with a knife, but they failed. Instead, those who tried to harm her always met with unexpected accidents.
Later, a group of people stopped the man in black and tried to kidnap her, but they failed and were killed by the man in black. The man in black also suffered heavy losses, with only two people remaining.
That day, in a forest, the two men in black wanted to abandon her and leave her to fend for herself, but the two men in black wandered around in the forest for a day and a night without escaping. Xingxing took a nap in the forest and when she woke up, she found herself lying on a tree trunk.
Two little monkeys were surrounding her, but she wasn't afraid. She laughed and reached out to grab the monkeys, who jumped away in fright.
She wanted to get down from the tree; she didn't want to stay there anymore. She was hungry and wanted to eat, but no one was there to take care of her. The maids and eunuchs were not around. She knew she had been captured by the villains and couldn't return to the palace for the time being, but she wasn't afraid.
Those bad guys can't hurt her. Every time they try to harm her, they end up getting hurt themselves first. Sigh, she's really amazing. I wonder if it's really God protecting her.
"I'm hungry! Quickly put me under the tree so I can find something to eat!" Four-year-old Xingxing was incredibly cute, spoiled yet proud. Pointing at the little monkey, she said, "Or you could share some of your food with me. If you give me food, when I return to the palace, I'll reward you with endless riches and honors, lots of delicious food, and beautiful clothes!"
Little monkey: "?" I don't understand.
Just then, the mother monkey returned, picked up Xingxing and ran away. Xingxing tried to struggle, but found it was useless, so she gave up.
"Where are you taking me?" the little girl asked in her childish voice.
The mother monkey ignored her, carrying her as she darted and jumped between the trees, startling Xingxing so much that she opened her mouth wide and screamed, it was hard to tell whether she was scared or excited.
She was probably excited, after all, she could feel that exhilarating feeling of taking off even in her dreams.
"Giggle, giggle, giggle." The little girl laughed merrily, her silvery laughter echoing throughout the entire forest.
The mother monkey carried her to a fruit tree with many pears on it, each pear as big as an adult's fist. The tree was full of monkeys, and several of them even picked pears and shared them with her.
Xingxing didn't stand on ceremony with them. She took a pear and took a big bite. It was so juicy and sweet. She quickly finished one, then another, and was full after eating two.
She drifted off to sleep again, and when she woke up, she found herself taken away by the men in black once more. She had no idea what had happened while she was asleep...
Wait a minute, she really thinks she heard someone calling her to eat, and saying they had to get going.
Xingxing opened her eyes blankly and saw Zhou Erfu's face looming large in front of her. She pushed him away with some disgust, "Second Brother, why are you so close?"
"The sun's high in the sky, you lazybones! Time to get up and eat. It's past Chen Shi (7-9 AM), you should have been on your way long ago. Everyone's waiting for you." Zhou Erfu said as he saw her wake up, ready to go out.
"Where's Brother Lin?" Since Zhu Lin arrived, he's always been the one to wake her up and comb her hair. Why can't I see him today?
"Someone sneaked into the village just now and was caught by Brother Lin. He's interrogating him now." Zhou Erfu was also eager to go and see, and also to tell Zhu Lin that Xingxing had woken up.
Speaking of this, Zhou Erfu himself was puzzled. Seeing Xingxing and Zhu Lin being so affectionate, he always felt jealous. But once Zhu Lin was not by Xingxing's side, and Xingxing wanted to find him, Zhou Erfu would subconsciously want to find Zhu Lin as soon as possible.
"What am I doing, taking it for granted that Zhu Lin should be by Xingxing's side? What am I thinking? Xingxing is my sister!" Zhou Erfu said, doubting himself as he went to find Zhu Lin.
The main hall where the interrogation was being conducted had lost its roof, and the interrogation was being conducted under the morning sun. Zhu Lin sat on a long bench, coldly staring at the young man kneeling on the ground.
The man was in his early twenties, with an average face, tanned skin, and wearing coarse linen clothes. His hands were extremely rough, covered with calluses, and his thumbs were even cracked.
"...That's how it is. Too many people died in the village, and the rest of us didn't dare to stay any longer, so we left. This time, my father told me before he died that there was a pottery jar buried under the bed in my old house, the house where my father used to sleep. Inside the pottery jar were ten taels of silver and a string of cash that he had saved."
