Chapter 24 My second sister-in-law secretly brought over some mountain eggs.

Old Zhou was in great pain from his wound and was getting drowsy listening to his wife's incessant chatter.

"Host, eat something before you sleep. Wait here, I'll bring it in right away." Zhao Guihua quickly bandaged his wound and went to the kitchen to get the meat porridge.

Actually, Zhou Laoda didn't have much of an appetite because the wound was too painful. He just endured it without howling. However, for the sake of his health, he opened his mouth and ate the whole big bowl of porridge, bite by bite.

After he finished eating, he closed his eyes and fell asleep. Zhao Guihua covered him with a blanket, took the bowl and went out. After finishing his meal, he sat in the kitchen to continue decocting medicine.

After the medicine was decocted, Zhao Guihua woke up Zhou Laoda and fed him the medicine. Then she decocted another pot. This night was destined to be a sleepless one. Zhao Guihua didn't dare to sleep either, and would only doze off when she was really tired.

They stayed by the bedside to keep an eye on Zhou Laoda's condition. The quintuplets were very sensible and also stayed in the kitchen to watch over the medicine. When they were drowsy, the five brothers would take turns going to bed to sleep for a while.

Xingxing insisted on staying in Zhou Laoda's room to take care of him, but she was young and fell asleep before midnight without realizing it. Zhao Guihua picked her up and carried her back to the next room.

In the middle of the night, Zhou Laoda indeed developed a high fever. Zhao Guihua hurriedly went to the kitchen to get medicine. With the help of Zhou Dafu and Zhou Erfu, she helped Zhou Laoda sit up and fed him the medicine again.

Half an hour later, Zhou Laoda's fever subsided, and the whole family finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Yu Ri, apart from Xing Xing, everyone else had dark circles under their eyes and was in a bad state. Zhou Laoda was so badly injured that they were not in the mood to work, so they simply stayed at home.

Xingxing felt very guilty. Last night she had vowed to stay with her father, but she fell asleep alone and slept until dawn. Sigh, she was really disappointing.

"Alright, don't be upset. Your father is much better now. It's all thanks to Xingxing who took me to gather herbs yesterday. Those herbs were very useful, otherwise your father wouldn't have recovered so quickly." Zhao Guihua hugged the little girl and comforted her gently. This child was young, but she was very worried.

After listening to Zhao Guihua's advice, Xingxing's mood improved, and she obediently went to eat breakfast.

When the sun was high in the sky, Zhou Laoda woke up once. Zhao Guihua fed him meat porridge and then a bowl of medicine, after which he fell into a deep sleep again.

Fortunately, the fever did not return.

After that, Zhao Guihua sat under the eaves and made clothes. She hadn't used up the cloth she had bought before, which she had originally intended to save for making new clothes for the children during the New Year.

But Zhou Laoda's clothes were torn yesterday, and now he only has one set of clothes left to wear. He has to make another set to change into.

Zhou Wufu and Zhou Sanfu are drying herbs, while Zhou Dafu, Zhou Erfu, and Zhou Sifu are watering vegetables in the backyard.

Xingxing was sweeping the floor in the main room with a broom. The six children in the family had to take turns sweeping every day. Zhao Guihua meant that she was still too young to sweep, and her five older brothers could take turns.

“No, even the stars have to take turns sweeping the floor. I’m also my parents’ child, and I should help with chores at home just like my brothers.” The little girl was quite principled.

Unable to dissuade her, I could only let her go.

Before, every time the stars were swept, Zhao Guihua and her husband or one of her five brothers would sweep them again when she wasn't looking. The little girl was too young and hadn't done chores before, so it was no wonder she couldn't sweep them clean. They could only sweep them again secretly.

Although everyone kept it a secret, the little girl seemed to have noticed something, so she's been sweeping the floor much more diligently lately, taking twice as long as usual, and she actually managed to get the floor clean.

Xingxing carried a dung basket to collect the garbage, then laboriously took it out and carried it outside to dump it.

As long as she sweeps the floor clean, her parents or brothers won't need to secretly sweep it again for her. Xingxing is becoming more and more capable and can sweep the floor very clean.

After sweeping the floor, the little girl ran to the kitchen to get a bamboo tube to drink water. Then, wiping her sweat, she came out, raised her little head, looked up at the sky, and looked inscrutable.

"Well, thank goodness the heavens have been kind. The weather has been good lately, so we don't have to worry about not having a rice harvest in the second half of the year. We've finally weathered this famine. It's a pity that I heard the situation in other prefectures isn't so good. There are more and more refugees. It's really worrying."

This is another example of what Zhao Guihua said yesterday; she just woke up and started repeating it.

"Pfft." Zhao Guihua couldn't help but laugh first, and then she gave her five sons some instructions.

"You guys need to watch your language from now on. You can't use those swear words anymore, or Xingxing will be in big trouble if she hears them."

“Mom, even if we don’t say anything, other people in the village will. Xingxing heard it when she went out to play, and she’ll repeat it when she comes back. What can we do? We can’t just keep her from going out.” Zhou Wufu was also at a loss for words.

Xingxing found a low wooden stool and sat down next to Zhao Guihua. She wrapped her little arms around the latter's arm and said in a soft, sweet voice, "Mom, Xingxing doesn't swear. I'll save the swear words for when I argue with people later."

"You're so young, who are you going to argue with?" Zhao Guihua said with amusement.

“There were so many people, Zhou Dahua and Zhou Dajin, and Zhou Dayin,” Xingxing said, counting them off on her fingers. “And Zhou Laosan and Zhou Laosi. When they came to our house to cause trouble, Xingxing helped her mother scold them.”

Mentioning these people gives Zhao Guihua a heart attack. "Don't even mention those awful people. When they need something, their whole family comes running to our door. Your father was injured yesterday, and the Zhou family knows about it, but not a single person has come to ask about it. I've seen through them all."

"Even the stars have seen through it," the stars echoed.

"Pfft." He was originally very annoyed, but this little girl's words completely ruined his mood.

"You are truly my joy, our family's little lucky star."

"Knock knock." Just then, someone knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" Zhao Guihua asked loudly.
