"Mom, I know about mountain eggs. I saw them at Uncle Village Chief's house before. Aunt Zhao Xiu boiled some bird eggs and put them on my forehead." Xingxing looked at the four mountain eggs and swallowed.
We don't raise chickens at home, and we haven't found any bird eggs on the mountain before. I guess this girl has never eaten any before; look how much she's drooling!
"Wait here, Mom will cook it for you."
"Mom, Xingxing doesn't want to eat. That auntie just said that bird eggs are for Dad to nourish his body." Although Xingxing was a little tempted, she still refused.
“These few eggs won’t nourish your body. Meat is more nutritious. We have plenty of meat at home. Your dad won’t miss these few eggs.” Zhao Guihua smiled gently.
This girl is so adorable, so sensible and well-behaved, she's perfect in every way. Ever since she came to our home, we've never gone a day without meat. She's truly a lucky star.
If it weren't for the meat supplement, the family's food supply would have run out long ago, and they would be eating wild vegetables and tree roots by now.
The four small mountain eggs were cooked quickly, and Zhao Guihua gave them all to Xingxing, saying, "Just tap them on the table to peel off the shells before eating."
"Hehe, my little sister doesn't even know how to eat an egg," Zhou Wufu teased her.
"I know, Chun Chun and Dong Sheng used to give me sparrow eggs to eat." Xingxing angrily took the eggs and went to Zhou Laoda's room.
Old Zhou woke up just now. Perhaps the herbs he picked yesterday were working, because his wounds didn't hurt as much and he felt more comfortable.
"Dad, this is something your second aunt brought over for you to eat, eat it quickly." Xingxing had already eaten one, and now she brought it in for Zhou Laoda to eat.
“Dad’s not hungry, Xingxing, you eat.” Old Zhou said in a hoarse voice.
"Dad, I've already eaten. You should eat too. It'll help you recover." Then she stuffed the mountain egg into his mouth.
Xingxing looked at him with a smile and said, "Daddy eats two, and Xingxing eats two."
Zhao Guihua stood at the door watching, her eyes gradually welling up with tears, but the corners of her mouth involuntarily turned up. Her daughter was so young and already knew how to be filial to her father; she was such a good child.
That evening, Xingxing called Zhou Erfu to her room. The two siblings whispered for a long time. As the time for the funeral approached, Zhao Guihua dragged Zhou Erfu out.
"It's time to sleep. Why are you still lingering in your sister's room? Even if you don't sleep, your sister needs to sleep too."
Zhou Erfu was speechless. "Mom, it's not that I don't want to sleep, it's that my sister wants to go up the mountain to collect bird eggs tomorrow, but she can't climb trees, so she asked me for help. You don't know, she has so many ideas. One minute she wants me to do this, the next minute she wants me to do that. I have no idea what she wants to do."
“My sister always has her reasons for doing things. As long as it’s not murder or arson, you can just listen to her.” Zhao Guihua said indulgently.
Zhou Erfu looked at his mother in disbelief. "Mother, you really have wild ideas. My sister is so young, and I am so young. You want us to kill and commit arson?"
"I was just giving you an example, and you're already pushing your luck. You little brat, do you want a beating?" Zhao Guihua pretended to hit him.
"Don't hit me, I'm going to sleep right now." Zhou Erfu ran as fast as he could.
After another night of rest, Zhou Lao Er's spirits improved significantly. He was able to sit up, and apart from his pale face due to excessive blood loss, everything seemed to be recovering well.
Zhou Erfu, carrying a wood-chopping knife, told his father before leaving, "Dad, my eldest brother, my three younger brothers, and I are taking Xingxing up the mountain to collect bird eggs. We'll cook them for you to nourish your body."
"Be careful, take good care of Xingxing," Zhou Laoda whispered.
"Don't go too far, come back for lunch." Zhao Guihua had been trying to persuade Xingxing not to go up the mountain for a while, but the little girl insisted on going.
"Mom, don't worry, we'll be back soon. Just wait to eat eggs." Xingxing comforted her. Her mother was always worrying, afraid that she would suffer or get hurt.
But Xingxing isn't so easily hurt, well, except for the time when Zhou Dahua whipped her with a vine.
Speaking of Zhou Dahua, it's like we've run into each other again today on the mountain. This time, she was accompanied not only by Zhou Dajin and Zhou Dayin, but also by Zhou Laosi's son, Zhou Dacai.
And Zhou Lao Er's children, Zhou Daya and Zhou Dafa.
"Hmph, let's hurry up and leave, lest some shameless people follow us again." Zhou Wufu made a face at Zhou Dahua and the others.
"Zhou Wufu, who are you calling shameless?" Zhou Dajin's eyes darkened, and he looked just like his father, Zhou Laosan.
“Whoever answers is the one being referred to.” Zhou Wufu wasn’t afraid of him and glared at him fiercely.
Zhou Dafu, being a calm and collected man, didn't want to get entangled with his cousins, so he told his younger brothers to leave quickly and not to pay any attention to the Zhou family.
Xingxing was being carried on Zhou Dafu's back. She rolled her eyes at Zhou Dahua and stuck out her tongue. "You annoying girl, I always run into her."
"Sister, that little vixen is glaring at you," Zhou Dayin warned.
Zhou Dahua kept a straight face and didn't say a word. Instead, she glared at her second brother. "You brat, can't you see for yourself?"
Of course she knew that the little girl was rolling her eyes at her, and she was furious, but what could she do?
After I hit that girl once, she had so much bad luck afterwards. She was either stung by wasps or fell into a pit. Even when she was picking wild vegetables, she was chased by bamboo vipers. She had bad luck every day for a whole month.
Later, she began to think that this matter was very strange and might be related to that girl. The more she thought about it, the more she felt that it made sense. Zhou Dahua was no ordinary person and had his own way of thinking.
So that night, in the middle of the night, after all the elders in the family were asleep, she got up, knelt in the yard, pointed to the sky and swore that she would never dare to bully Zhou Xingxing again, and begged God to let her go and not let her suffer any more misfortune.
Zhou Dahua didn't know if it would work or not, but she was terrified of bad luck. However, miraculously, she didn't have any more accidents after that, and her injuries gradually healed.
