Chapter 26 Catching Pheasants with a Wicker Basket

Zhou Sanfu and Zhou Wufu used their hands and feet to pull up many vines, and then began to weave vine baskets. Fortunately, the five brothers had been forced by their mother to learn how to weave bamboo ware.

Although my skills aren't great, I can still weave, and rattan is much easier to weave than bamboo strips.

Xingxing was anxious and wanted to help, but her arms were too short, and after weaving for a long time, she couldn't make anything decent and had to give up.

Three-quarters of an hour later, a rather ugly basket made of rattan was finished; actually, it would be more accurate to call it a rattan net.

The shape doesn't matter; the important thing is whether you can catch the pheasant.

Zhou Sanfu and Zhou Wufu tied the cage between two trees, then led Xingxing to a crooked tree. Zhou Wufu carried Xingxing up the tree and placed her on the trunk to sit.

“Little sister, you’d better hold on tight and don’t move around, or you’ll fall and get hurt and bleed, like Dad, lying in bed and unable to get up, understand?” Zhou Wufu coaxed and threatened at the same time.

Xingxing gave him a look as if he were an idiot, and said in a childish voice, "Xingxing isn't that stupid, she won't fall, Fifth Brother, don't worry."

Zhou Wufu seemed oblivious to his sister's disdainful look. He quickly climbed down the tree, and together with Zhou Sanfu, they each took a large tree branch and went around to the back of where the pheasants were roosting. Then, they vigorously waved the branches and began to chase the pheasants with all their might.

You don't know until you chase them out. Once you chase the pheasants out, you'll find that there are more than ten pheasants hiding in the weeds. After a commotion, most of the pheasants ran away.

Only three pheasants made it into the cage. The two brothers quickly closed the cage and dealt with the pheasants. Then they went to the nest to collect the eggs.

Good heavens, there were more than twenty eggs in the nest!

"Sanfu, Wufu, why did you suddenly start catching pheasants? You didn't even tell us when you found them, you just caught them secretly." Zhou Erfu quickly climbed down from the tree, fuming and unhappy.

He climbed so hard to the top of the seven-meter-high tree, only to find six sparrow eggs. Then he saw his two younger brothers catching pheasants under the tree, without even inviting him to join them.

Zhou Sanfu rolled his eyes at his second brother, "It's not that we didn't want to call you, but we were afraid that making a sound would scare the pheasants away. Besides, we've been weaving vine baskets under the tree for most of the day, so you should have come down by now. Who knew you could stay up in the tree for so long?"

"Oh, what's there to argue about? Anyway, the pheasant has already been caught. We'll take it back and stew it. You'll get your share, won't you?" Zhou Wufu thought his second brother just liked to stir up trouble.

"Second Brother, what's in your basket?" Xingxing noticed that Zhou Erfu's basket seemed quite heavy, making his back a little hunched.

Speaking of this, Zhou Erfu got excited and immediately put down his basket, took out a handful of spiky black hairy balls from it, and said, "Look, don't be fooled by its dark color and thorns, the fruit inside is delicious."

As Zhou Erfu was talking, he peeled one and put it in his mouth to eat, and even wanted to give some to Xingxing, but Zhou Sanfu quickly stopped him.

"Second brother, why do you eat all sorts of things? What if something happens?" He eats them himself, but he also gives them to his sister.

"Nothing will happen. I've seen wild boars and birds eat it before, and they're all fine. I tried one myself, and it's been more than half an hour, and nothing's wrong with me."

Actually, he ate several chestnuts, which tasted sweet, and he instinctively felt they were edible, but he couldn't tell his younger brother that.

Xingxing chewed on the chestnut like a little hamster. She nodded vigorously. It was delicious. This thing shouldn't be poisonous. If there was any danger, she would sense it.

With his sister's approval, Zhou Erfu gained even more confidence. He bent down and rummaged through the basket on his back, pulling out a handful of pine cones, which he proudly presented to Xingxing.

"Little sister, look! Pine cones! I saw that the squirrels ate them and were fine. I tried some too."

"Second brother, you need to change this habit, or something bad might really happen to you one day." When he was a child, Zhou Erfu liked to pick wild fruits and eat them randomly. Once, he was poisoned and had diarrhea for two days. He was so dehydrated that he almost died.

But he was bold and didn't learn his lesson. He got through that one time, but he still ate random things afterward. However, he learned his lesson and would first observe how animals reacted to the food. If wild animals ate it without any problems, then he would try it himself.

I've told him many times that some things are fine for animals to eat, but might cause problems for humans. My second brother says he understands, but he still does whatever he wants.

He's lucky to be alive and well until now.

Xingxing picked up the pine cone to peel it and eat it, but Zhou Sanfu stopped her, saying, "Xingxing, don't eat this yet. What if it's poisonous?"

“Second Brother ate it and wasn’t poisoned, which means it’s safe to eat.” Xingxing’s face was full of innocence.

"Have you really eaten?" Zhou Sanfu asked Zhou Erfu again, as if to confirm.

“I’ve never eaten it before, yet I dared to give it to my sister. You don’t believe me? Fine, I’ll eat it and show you.” Zhou Erfu picked up the pine cone and ate it.

At this moment, Zhou Dafu and Zhou Sifu also came down from the tree, their baskets filled with things, which turned out to be black fur balls.

"Big brother, fourth brother, why did you pick these things too?" Zhou Sanfu asked, puzzled. His eldest brother was the most steady among them. If even the eldest brother picked so many fuzzy balls, it meant that these fuzzy balls were indeed edible.

Zhou Dafu smiled and said, "I saw that my second brother had eaten it without any problems, so I picked a whole basketful, which took quite a while."

Zhou Dafu picked the fruit because he saw his older brother picking it, which shows that Zhou Dafu had a lot of authority among the quintuplets and his younger brothers trusted him.

They returned home with a full load of goodies, and Zhao Guihua had just finished preparing lunch.

"It's quite punctual. I thought I'd have to wait a bit longer." Zhao Guihua carried the food to the octagonal table in the main room and set out the bowls and chopsticks.

Xingxing ran over and climbed onto the bench. Her rosy cheeks lit up with a smile. "Wow, there's fried loach, stir-fried vegetables with meat slices, and stewed meat soup!"
