Soon everyone left, leaving only the village chief's family. They busied themselves packing up the things inside the house and moving cabinets and other items to the yard to air them out.
As soon as Zhao Xiu entered the house, she tripped over something and almost fell flat on her face. She was so angry that she cursed loudly and got up to kick the stone.
Wait a minute, why is this stone so golden it's blinding?
"Am I going blind? This thing looks like gold!" Zhao Xiu stared wide-eyed in disbelief.
The village chief rushed over to help his wife. Hearing what she said, he squatted down, picked up the things on the ground, and then put them to his lips and bit them. His voice trembled slightly as he said, "My wife is really gold. We've hit the jackpot."
The villagers are all dirt poor, so it couldn't have been dropped by one of them.
"Could it be that this gold was struck down by lightning?" Zhao Xiu's imagination ran wild once again.
"No matter how it came about, we mustn't make a fuss about it, lest we arouse envy." The village chief cautiously looked around and saw that the three children were watching.
He called the children over and gave them a serious talking-to: they must never let anyone know that they had found gold, otherwise thieves would definitely be after them.
On the other hand, after Xingxing was taken home by Zhou Laosan, the latter did not give her anything to eat, but simply left her there and ignored her.
"Dad, why did you bring this jinx back?" Zhang Cui glared at Xingxing with a sarcastic look.
“Don’t talk nonsense, don’t let the child hear it,” Zhou Laosan pulled Zhang Cui aside and whispered, “Why are you so superstitious? Where do so many jinxes come from? Even if they are jinxes, they’ll only stay for a few days. Once her parents find her, they’ll give her a reward and take her away.”
Zhang Cui shut up at the thought of the reward money. Well, she'd keep him for now.
As noon approached, Zhang Cui looked down at the stars and said, "You brat, I'm going to make lunch. Come to the kitchen and help me start the fire."
Xingxing honestly replied, "I don't know how to start a fire yet."
"If you don't know how, then learn! Nobody's born knowing how. You eat at my house and live at my house, and you complain when I ask you to help start a fire." Zhang Cui raised her hand to poke Xingxing's forehead.
Xingxing instinctively took two steps back, her big, dark eyes filled with innocence. "Xingxing is willing to learn. Auntie, you can teach me. Please don't hit Xingxing."
"And my name is Xingxing (Star), not 'brat'."
Fifteen minutes later, Xingxing coughed from the smoke, her once fair face was covered in ash, and her little hands were dirty.
"She can't even add firewood properly. She really is a rich family's child. Her parents had better give her a generous reward later, or don't blame me for making things difficult for her." Zhang Cui scooped up the cooked wild vegetable porridge and muttered to herself.
At night, Zhang Cuiyuan wanted to send Xingxing to sleep in the woodshed, but Zhou Laosan was worried that the child's family would come looking for her and give her less reward money if they saw that she was not raising the child well.
Let Xingxing sleep with my daughter.
In the middle of the night, Zhang Cui suddenly became interested and pestered the sleeping Zhou Laosan to do things. Zhou Laosan was also aroused and became interested, so the couple started their nighttime activities.
Xingxing was pushed to the edge of the bed by Zhou Laosan's daughter, and she was always worried that she would fall off the bed, so she couldn't sleep soundly. When she heard the "creaking" sound coming from next door, she couldn't sleep at all.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang, as if something next door had collapsed.
"Ouch, my back!" Zhang Cui cried out in pain.
"Ouch, ouch, ouch! My foot got caught in the bed board!" Zhou Laosan cried out in pain. "You bitch, I was sleeping peacefully when you insisted on coming. Now look what happened, the bed collapsed."
