The two of them worked in the space for an hour before coming out. By then it was completely dark, and Xingxing was starving and eager to go eat. Zhu Lin followed leisurely behind.
As Xingxing walked down the corridor, she bumped into someone who was taller and also hurrying back. The person bumped into her with more force, causing Xingxing to stumble. Zhu Lin stepped over and caught her, preventing her little bottom from making intimate contact with the ground.
"Zhao Mingyue, aren't you watching where you're going?" Zhu Lin glanced at her unhappily, her expression quite cold.
Zhao Mingyue was still wearing animal skin clothes. Although he had been out of the swamp for more than a month, he had never worn cloth clothes. He did buy a few sets of cotton clothes from the cloth shop, but he had never worn them.
"Where did you go so late?" Zhu Lin didn't ask this without reason. He had noticed that the other person looked a little anxious, as if something unusual had happened.
Although Zhao Mingyue's complexion had returned to normal by this time, Zhu Lin still caught a fleeting glimpse of guilt in his eyes.
"Nothing, I just went for a walk and saw that the sky was full of dark clouds, so I was worried that it would rain heavily again." This explanation was not wrong. The flood outside the city gate had not yet receded, and if it rained again, it would indeed cause concern.
Xingxing then spoke up: "Where's Zhang Xiantao? Why isn't she with you? Aren't you two always together?"
"She wasn't feeling well today, so she went to bed early. I have other things to do, so I won't keep you company any longer." With that, Zhao Mingyue quickly went back to her room.
Zhu Lin stared thoughtfully at the other person's retreating figure behind the door, feeling that something was amiss. Then he felt Xingxing tug at his sleeve, and he looked down.
Xingxing pointed to the ground where Zoulang was and whispered, "Look, there's a bloodstain here. Zhao Mingyue was standing right here. Did he secretly kill someone?"
The boy frowned as he looked at the faint bloodstains. "Zhao Mingyue doesn't seem like the type to kill innocent people indiscriminately. There must be some hidden story behind this. No rush, let's go eat first."
"After dinner, I'll send my secret guards to investigate what's going on," Xingxing said with a hint of pride. She continued in a low voice, "That's the good thing about having people under your command. If you want to know something, you don't have to figure out how to find out yourself. Just give the order, and someone will take care of it."
Zhu Lin chuckled and gently pinched her cheek. "You're right, my little princess."
"Yes, I am a princess of the Great Jin Dynasty, my father's first princess, I'm very powerful." Xingxing couldn't help but start bragging again.
At this moment, Zhao Mingyue leaned against the door. After hearing the two people outside walk away, he quietly opened the door again. After making sure no one was paying attention to him, he carefully went out. When he got to Zhang Xiantao's door next door, he carefully looked around again before pushing the door open and going in.
Xingxing and Zhulin peeked out from a clump of low flowering shrubs. Xingxing had an "I knew it" look on her face. "He ran into Zhang Xiantao's house again. He wouldn't be trying to kill Zhang Xiantao, would he?"
"Why are you thinking about all sorts of nonsense in your little head?" Zhu Lin wondered if the child had suffered some kind of trauma, otherwise why would he keep talking about who wanted to kill whom?
"I wasn't thinking anything. I'm just perceptive. I noticed something that others couldn't. I'm solving a case," the girl retorted earnestly.
"Shh, don't talk, he's out again." Zhu Lin pointed ahead.
Zhao Mingyue left Zhang Xiantao's room less than fifteen minutes after entering, and then quietly returned to her own room. Xingxing and Zhu Lin looked puzzled, wondering whether they should go and check on Zhang Xiantao.
However, before the two of them could get over, Zhang Xiantao came out of the house. She seemed to have just woken up. After opening the door, she stood outside and stretched, then rubbed her forehead, looking like she was still having a headache and was not fully awake.
Seeing that she was alright, Xingxing touched her flat little belly and decided to leave her for now and eat first.
So the two of them didn't know that not long after they left, Zhang Xiantao went to knock on Zhao Mingyue's door. After knocking for a long time without anyone answering, Zhang Xiantao was not satisfied. "Zhao Mingyue, come out here! Don't think that just because you're hiding inside I can't do anything to you. You have the ability to drug me, but you don't have the guts to admit it. Come out here!"
The door suddenly opened, and Zhao Mingyue grabbed her arm and pulled her forcefully into the room before closing the door tightly.
"Keep your voice down, or everyone will hear you." Zhao Mingyue glared at her, somewhat annoyed.
"You dare glare at me? Tell me, why did you drug me to death this evening? Do you think I'm stupid? I'm not someone to be trifled with. I have your drug too. I could smell it right away. Now you'd better tell me honestly why you suddenly treated me like that?"
This brat actually dared to lay a hand on her. She always treated him so well, giving him the best food and clothes first. Even though he didn't wear the clothes she bought, he never missed out on food and drink. They held hands all the way as they fled the famine, and everyone said they were as close as one person.
She thought so too, but this is the result?
Look at what he's done!
"Don't be angry. I am hiding something from you, but I haven't done anything bad or harmed any innocent people. Anyway, don't ask anymore. You'll know later." Zhao Mingyue's delicate and handsome face was tense, as if she was enduring something.
Seeing his reaction, Zhang Xiantao couldn't bear to press him any further and softened her tone, saying, "What is it that you can't even tell me?"
"It's getting late, go back to sleep. If you're unhappy, I'll drug you. I won't do it again. I'm sorry this time, I was wrong." Zhao Mingyue apologized sincerely.
Zhang Xiantao pursed her lips and stared at him for a long time. Finally, she stomped her foot and said angrily, "You just know I can't do anything to you. You just know I'm good to you. You little ungrateful wretch, just you wait. I'll see what kind of big trouble you've gotten yourself into later. Humph."
"Bang." The door was slammed shut.
The courtyard was silent, and even though the people in the other rooms heard the commotion outside, no one came out to check.
Two white figures slowly descended from the rooftop. Zhu Qiuyu, fanning himself with a folding fan, clicked his tongue a few times and said, "Sure enough, I had long suspected that Zhao Mingyue's departure from the swamp was not so simple. His grandmother's generation was single-mindedly focused on revenge; how could they just give it up like that?"
Zhu Chumo chuckled as he recalled the scene he had witnessed earlier, his expression one of helplessness. "I thought he would rush into the Jin residence and kill him without leaving a trace, but he didn't follow the usual path. This kid is a promising talent."
"What are you two senior brothers chatting about so happily? What did Zhao Mingyue do tonight that made you follow him the whole time, and you even think he has a bright future? Tell us." Zhu Lin had silently appeared behind them at some point.
Zhu Qiuyu's lips twitched, and he pretended to cover his chest, saying, "Junior brother, your senior brothers are getting old. You should walk with heavier steps in the future. Your unpredictable movements will scare us."
"Don't cause trouble, answer me quickly." The young man adopted the air of a young master.
