Chapter 44 Praying for Rain

After calming down, the village chief immediately said to Zhao Guihua, "Go and wake up everyone in the village. Have Zhao Xiu come with us and take the elderly and children to the mountains to hide. You women should protect the elderly and children. If we can't get back, the elderly and children will depend on you to support them."

Hearing these words of advice, which sounded like a deathbed confession, Zhao Guihua suddenly burst into tears.

“If they have knives, and there are too many of them, we probably can’t beat them at all. Village chief, let’s run away together,” Zhao Guihua said, her face pale and choked with sobs.

“If we all flee together, the refugees will catch up with us, and then no one will be able to escape. We’ll hold them off for a while and cover their retreat. You guys should escape quickly. If we’re lucky, we men will come and join you.”

The village chief smiled and suddenly felt completely calm. As long as he could protect his wife, children, and elderly family members, everything was worth it. What did it matter if he lost his life?

“Master…” Zhao Guihua clutched Zhou Laoda’s sleeve tightly, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Let's go quickly, don't waste time." Old Zhou hugged his wife, feeling a pang of sadness. He had six children, and if something really happened to him, his wife would have to raise all six children by herself. How would she manage?

But he couldn't back down; if these men didn't stand in front of him, none of them would survive.

Perhaps the stars had foreseen this early, because by the time Zhao Guihua and Zhao Xiu had gathered all the women, elderly, and children in the village and moved them to the end of the village, there was still no movement at the village entrance.

Zhao Guihua, carrying her daughter and leading her five sons, was about to go up the mountain with everyone when she suddenly heard the sound of a gong coming from the village entrance.

When the refugees arrived, the men of the village were ready to fight them to the death.

A fire lit up at the village entrance, and Zhao Guihua's heart jumped into her throat. Those thugs were really going to launch rockets to burn down their houses.

"God, why are you treating us like this? Did we burn down your house or kill your whole family in our past lives? God, open your eyes!" An old man knelt on the ground, crying and praying.

They are old and lack the strength to fight against the refugees. If the pillar of their families is gone, the group of old bones will probably starve to death soon. At this point, they have no other choice but to kneel and pray to the gods.

"Hurry up and go, stop kneeling, escaping is the priority." Zhao Xiu shed tears but dared not cry out loud. As the village chief's wife, she had to set a good example and could not show weakness at this crucial moment.

Xingxing looked up at the sky and thought about how when the village chief's house was struck by lightning, a heavy rain came and put out the fire. If a heavy rain were to fall now, would the houses in the village be saved?

She struggled to get down from Zhao Guihua's arms, but the latter, still holding her arms tightly, asked, "Girl, do you need to pee? Why do you have to get down?"

Xingxing tugged at her clothes and said in a clear voice, "Mother, if it rains, the heavy rain will put out the fire."

Without waiting for Zhao Guihua's reaction, she bent her short legs and knelt on the ground, shouting cutely at the night sky: "God, please send down heavy rain! The houses in our village are on fire! Please send down rain to put out the fire! If you can hear me, please send down rain quickly!"

Zhao Guihua listened to her daughter's ethereal little voice and suddenly came to her senses. Good heavens, why did you shout in front of so many people? What if you really made it rain? What if people start to think you are a monster?
