Xingxing, Ruru, and Chunchun were keeping the bride company in the bridal chamber. The bride was a very outgoing and restless person, and she had long wanted to lift her red veil and get some pastries from the table.
But she dared not. After all, today was her big day. Last night and today, her mother had repeatedly told her to behave properly and not to act impulsively on such an important day.
Despite Song Kang's seemingly carefree nature, she is actually quite meticulous and knows how to behave appropriately. Even if she couldn't resist on this joyous occasion, she would control herself and not do anything reckless.
Fortunately, Xingxing and the others came to talk to her. Although there was a red veil between them, having someone to talk to helped to distract her and make it less unbearable.
Outside, Dafu walked into the kitchen with a sullen face. Sanfu saw this and hurriedly asked what was wrong.
"It's nothing. I just passed by the main room and heard the third and fourth wives talking badly about our family. It was really annoying," Zhou Dafu said, somewhat annoyed.
“They’re just a bunch of clowns. Why bother with them? It’s not worth getting upset. Just pretend they don’t exist,” Zhou Sanfu comforted him.
"I just think these people are so gossipy. Today is my second uncle's wedding, and on such a joyous occasion, some people are spreading rumors." Zhou Dafu couldn't help but mutter a few more words.
“That’s just how the third and fourth wives are, they can’t change it. That’s how they are for life. If you argue with people like them, you’ll exhaust yourself. Just ignore them,” Sanfu continued calmly.
Dafu paused, then suddenly laughed, “That’s right. I just lost my temper and got angry. Actually, those people can’t do anything except gossip and talk about others behind their backs. There’s no need to care about them. Instead of paying attention to what they’re saying, you should focus your energy on studying.”
“That’s the right way to think about it,” Sanfu put the chopped chicken in a bowl, pointed outside, and said, “I just saw Chun Chun. It looks like she went to the new house with Xingxing to see the bride.”
Dafu glanced at him, his expression unchanged, and said, "Ruru is calling too, why don't you go and take a look?"
Sanfu was slightly taken aback. He had only intended to tease his older brother, seeing his shy and blushing face, but he didn't expect that the older brother would fall for it and even tease him in return.
Many relatives came today, as well as some people from the town who were acquainted with the second branch of the family. Some of them would ask a few more questions when they saw the handsome Dafu and Sanfu, implying that they wanted to act as matchmakers for them.
At this point, the two of them didn't care about being embarrassed anymore and shamelessly said that they were already engaged and that the future bride would be attending the wedding banquet today, telling those who wanted to play matchmaker to shut up and stop worrying.
The lively day passed quickly. After dinner, the eldest son's family went home early. It was the hottest time of the year, and the weather was unbearably hot. No one knew why the second son's family was in such a hurry to choose such a hot day for the wedding. Wouldn't all the food go bad tomorrow?
"It won't spoil. Your second uncle and aunt didn't prepare any other return gifts, so they let the guests take the leftovers home to eat, so there won't be any waste," Zhao Guihua explained.
Old Zhou was a bit drunk and his speech was slurred, but his mind was clear. "Your aunt went to the temple to find a fortune teller to choose an auspicious day. He said that Dafa had suffered too many calamities when he was young and lacked Yang energy, so he chose to get married during the hottest days of summer so that things would go smoothly for him in the future."
Well, no one had a chance to refute that.
Two days later, Xingxing was to return to the capital. At the end of next month, she would be of marriageable age. The coming-of-age ceremony for princesses was different from that of ordinary people; it was extremely grand and luxurious.
In short, she definitely had to return to the capital; she couldn't delay any longer, or the emperor would have her bound and taken back.
Xingxing is a bit annoyed. This winter is the wedding day of Dafu and Sanfu, and she probably won't be able to make it back.
After returning to the palace, her father and mother would not let her leave the capital so easily. Another reason was that by the time she returned to the capital, it might start snowing in the north, and no one could guarantee that the roads wouldn't be blocked by heavy snow. In that case, she wouldn't be able to come back. Moreover, as the year draws to a close, she would have to spend the New Year with her father and mother.
She was torn between two options, which was really putting her in a difficult position. But no matter how conflicted she was, there was nothing she could do; she still had to leave.
"Fine, I'll just send more gifts to my older brothers later, hoping to make up for not being able to come back for the wedding banquet," Xingxing said with a bitter face.
"How about we postpone the date?" Zhao Guihua asked, frowning.
Xingxing immediately shook her head in opposition, "That won't do. We can't postpone my eldest brother's and third brother's weddings just because of me. It's not good for anyone. The village chief's family and the Chen family will think we don't take them seriously. Once the wedding date is chosen, how can it be changed?"
“Exactly, look at how you talk. If your two in-laws hear this, you'll offend them.” Old Zhou glanced at her disapprovingly.
Zhao Guihua smiled wryly and said in a low voice, "I just said the wrong thing in a moment of panic. It wasn't intentional. If you don't want to change it, then don't."
On the day Xingxing left, Zhou Laoda's family took her to the county town and then wanted to take her to the prefectural city, but Xingxing said that she didn't need to go through all that trouble.
"Just take a boat from the county town, no need to see me off anymore. If I really can't come back for my brothers' wedding banquet in the future, let's all come to the capital together when we have time. That house in the capital has been empty all this time." Xingxing wiped the corner of her eyes, not letting the tears fall.
"Okay, then your parents and brothers and sisters-in-law will definitely go to the capital to find you. You must take good care of yourself." Zhao Guihua's tears started flowing again after she had only said a few words.
For a moment, everyone felt reluctant to part, and their throats felt blocked, leaving them speechless.
Goodbye, stars, remember to come back.
The most carefree one is probably Candy. Over the past few years, she has gotten used to life without Xingxing around. She is doing very well in Yegou Village, happy every day. Xingxing always comes back and leaves again, and she has gotten used to it.
