The men in the village stood guard by the stream, not daring to light torches for fear of alerting the refugees. Each of them carried farm tools, such as hoes, machetes, or axes, ready to attack the refugees as soon as they arrived.
Old Zhou held an axe in one hand and touched the herb packet in his pocket with the other. It was given to him by his daughter, who said that sprinkling it in the stream could help deal with refugees.
When asked what role the stars could play, the little girl shook her head blankly, only saying that they could help, but she couldn't explain it in detail. Could it be that Boss Zhou was thinking of poison?
Here they come! After getting used to the darkness of the night, Boss Zhou was able to see in the dark. Although he couldn't see very clearly, he could tell that there were rafts coming down the stream and that there were quite a few people on them.
Old Zhou gritted his teeth and threw a bag of herbs into the stream. The herbs were quickly washed away by the water without any reaction.
Boss Zhou: "?"
Well, my daughter is still young. She meant well and wanted to save everyone. If the herbs didn't work, they didn't work.
"Ah... snakes, water snakes! How come there are so many water snakes all of a sudden?" The refugees on the raft started howling like ghosts before they even got close.
Zhou Laoda's heart skipped a beat. So the herb could attract water snakes and make them go crazy and bite people.
Although he had this suspicion in his heart, he didn't show it on his face. No matter what, he couldn't tell anyone else about this; it was enough for him to know it himself.
Although there were many water snakes, there were also many refugees. Soon, some people rushed ashore. Boss Zhou led his men to rush over and fight with the refugees. The group he led had houses closer to the end of the village, so they were responsible for guarding the stream at the end of the village.
The village chief guarded the stream in the middle of the village, while another group of villagers guarded the entrance.
Thanks to the herbal medicine, Zhou and his men were able to subdue all the refugees in about 15 minutes.
Hearing that there was no sound outside, Zhao Guihua ran out to check on the situation, asking, "How is the husband?"
"Everything's taken care of, but I don't know if anyone else will come." Boss Zhou went over to her and pulled her aside to speak quietly.
"Do you have any more herbs? Put some more in the stream, so that even if someone comes, it will be easier to deal with them."
“Yes, I’ve taken them out. There are three more packets.” Zhao Guihua gave him all the herbal packets.
Old Zhou: "Put all three packages into the stream. The stream should be safe now. Leave a few people here to guard it. I'll take some men to help the village chief and the others."
The village chief and his group don't have any herbs to drive the water snakes mad and stop the refugees, so the situation is probably very bad.
"Then be careful. I'll take care of things at home, so don't worry." Zhao Guihua watched as Zhou Laoda left with his men, then went home and locked the door.
The fighting continued until nearly dawn. It was already early winter, and daylight came slowly. The villagers carried torches, and the refugees either died or fled.
Fortunately, no one in Yegou Village lost their life despite the precautions taken, but many people were injured, some seriously, and their lives would be in danger if they did not receive timely treatment.
The stream was very fast-flowing, and refugees who fell in were quickly swept away. There was no need to worry about bodies sinking in the stream and having to go back to retrieve them; they were probably all washed downstream.
The village chief was also injured this time, with a deep stab wound on his back. Old Zhou carried him back and then hurriedly went back to his own home to get medicine for his wounds and bring it over.
"Are you badly injured? Take this and go help the person first. I'll bring it over later," Zhao Guihua said.
"Wife, take some medicine to Third Brother's wife. Zhang Cui is also injured, and it seems like she's seriously hurt." After giving the instructions with a solemn expression, Zhou the eldest turned around and went to deliver the medicine to the village chief.
“Zhang Cui deserves it, Mother, let’s not worry about whether she lives or dies,” Zhou Erfu sneered.
Zhao Guihua thought so too, but her husband specifically instructed her that Zhang Cui, no matter what, was still Zhou Laoda's sister-in-law, so she should at least go and see her.
The Zhou family members were heartless, but these people are different from them. They can't just ignore things; they are people with consciences, unlike Zhou Laosan and Zhou Laosi who are inhuman.
It was Zhao Guihua's kind heart that led her to bring two packets of medicine to Old Zhou's house. When she saw Zhang Cui's miserable state, she turned pale with fright. Luckily, she had brought the medicine; otherwise, Zhang Cui might not have been able to endure it and would have died.
One arm, one arm was cut off, leaving only a shoulder. Zhang Cui lay on the bed with her eyes closed, as if she had stopped breathing.
The Zhou family only knew how to cry, seemingly convinced that Zhang Cui was beyond saving. Once she had completely passed away, they carried her up the mountain and buried her.
Fortunately, Zhao Guihua came over. She trembled as she applied medicine to Zhang Cui's wounds, then bandaged her up with a clean strip of cloth. After that, she turned around and went home to get some internal medicine to brew.
When Zhao Guihua returned to Lao Zhou's house with the medicine, Zhou Laoda was just coming out of the village chief's house and was about to go home when he met his wife on the way.
"Where are you going? How is Zhang Cui?" There were so many refugees at the time that some rushed into the villagers' homes, including Old Zhou's house, which was also filled with refugees.
Apart from the two elderly people and a few children hiding inside the house, the Zhou family's sisters-in-law came out and fought with the refugees. The men were all outside, and the house was filled with women, the elderly, and children.
Only Chen Caocao, Zhang Cuizhong, and Mai Lian from the Zhou family were holding wooden sticks to resist the refugees. It was at this time that Zhang Cuizhong accidentally had her arm cut off by the refugees.
At the time, Zhou Laoda only heard from others that Zhang Cui was seriously injured, but he did not know that the injury was so severe that her arm had been cut off.
So the couple went to Old Zhou's house again and worked for almost an hour before they were done. Zhang Cui took the medicine and her condition seemed relatively stable, at least the bleeding had stopped. Seeing this, Old Zhou and Zhao Guihua wanted to go home first, since their children were all at home and they were worried about them.
"Oh dear, someone come quick! Help! Waaaaah!" Old Zhou wailed as he crawled into his house, carrying a blood-covered person on his back.
