Zhao Guizhi looked at Chen Yueru’s blank expression and sighed softly. The Third Miss’s phobia seemed to have completely healed, but her mind was still affected and not completely recovered. Otherwise, how could she be so easily fooled?
As dusk fell, Zhou Laoda and Zhao Guihua got up, while Xingxing was still fast asleep. The couple tiptoed out of the house and went to the kitchen to start a fire and cook.
Hearing the commotion, Zhou Erfu and Zhou Sifu also got up. These two boys are always the most diligent and capable. They went to the yard to draw well water, washed up quickly, and then went to the backyard to pick vegetables.
The Zhou family's daily breakfast consisted of porridge made with dried meat, along with a stir-fried plate of green vegetables. Chen Shunping ate the same thing as everyone else in the morning, but he had the most dried meat.
The food at noon and in the evening was better. Zhou Erfu and Zhou Sifu often brought back some bird eggs or caught a few sparrows, which they gave to Chen Shunping to help him recover.
Chen Shunping's health was severely compromised, and his family's limited resources prevented them from buying him tonics like bird's nest. They could only try their best to ensure he ate well. On several occasions, Zhao Guihua even picked wild ginseng whiskers and added them to his soup.
Zhao Guizhi was very moved when she found out, and she was worried that picking a few ginseng roots might affect the price.
"It's still cheaper than buying it from a pharmacy. It's just a few whiskers, I don't think it will make any difference," Zhao Guihua said with an optimistic smile.
After breakfast, the group set off. Zhou Erfu had grown a year older after the New Year and was even stronger. Among the quintuplets, he had grown the fastest and was half a head taller than the others, probably because he ate a lot.
Next is Zhou Sifu, who is a head taller than the other three brothers. Zhou Dafu, Zhou Sanfu, and Zhou Wufu are not much different in height.
Now, Zhou Erfu carries Xingxing in a basket on his back when they go up the mountain. Zhao Guihua knows that she is not as strong as him, but he always insists on carrying his sister, so Zhao Guihua just lets him do as he pleases.
Xingxing tilted her little head up and watched a flock of migratory birds flying across the sky. She seemed to see that these birds carried a tiny seed in their beaks, and that they would randomly drop the seeds as they passed through the forest.
The seeds fall to the ground, are nourished by spring rain, and begin to take root and sprout, eventually flowering and bearing fruit.
