Chapter 83 The city gates are closed

"Mother, five lucky brothers, Ruru, you're all up so early! Why isn't anyone calling Xingxing to get up?" The little girl stepped out the door, ran to Zhao Guihua, and hugged her leg.

"Mom, the stars are hungry."

Hearing her daughter's sweet, childlike voice, Zhao Guihua immediately put down the clothes she was mending. "Mother will go and bring over the meat porridge. You rinse your mouth and wash your face first."

Xingxing ran to the well, picked up a small bucket to draw water, and Zhou Erfu immediately stepped over, took the bucket, and filled it with well water for her.

“How many times have I told you to ask your brothers for water? Don’t try to do it yourself. You’re not even as heavy as a bucket of water. You can’t lift it. If you fall in headfirst, you might lose your life, and you won’t be able to drink the well water either.” Zhou Erfu flicked her forehead and kept nagging.

"But Xingxing is already six years old after the New Year. Last year she couldn't lift a small bucket of water. Why can't she lift it now that she's a year older? It doesn't make sense."

Xingxing was a little unconvinced. She hadn't even tried, so how did her second brother know she couldn't lift it? Every time she tried to secretly fetch water, her family would stop her, and she never succeeded.

"You'll be able to fetch water by yourself in two more years. You can't do it now. You're still young, so don't rush it." Zhao Guihua carried Xingxing's breakfast to the main room, reassuring her as she spoke.

When Xingxing saw the food, she stopped worrying about fetching water and ran straight to the main room. After climbing onto the table, her eyes lit up even more. "Wow, there's steamed egg custard again! Ruru, do you want some?"

"I've already eaten. My aunt steamed a lot of egg custard, and my brother and the others ate some too," Chen Yueru replied obediently.

"Then I'll eat it myself," Xingxing said, opening her mouth wide and taking a big spoonful of steamed egg custard. Then, remembering something, she looked up and asked Zhao Guihua, "Mom, can I eat my big melon now?"

Zhao Guihua was taken aback for a moment before realizing what she was asking. "It hasn't bloomed yet, so how could there be any melons? But the vines have grown quite a bit. I think it won't be long before it blooms. Don't worry, the melons will grow when the season comes."

These words were meant to comfort Xingxing, since it was Zhao Guihua's first time growing such a big melon, and to be honest, she wasn't sure if she could grow any melons at all.
