Chapter 22 Digging for Herbs

They rubbed their eyes, still half asleep, and moved closer to Ye Wenxue, their noses twitching slightly.

"Mom, what are we having for dinner today?"

Ye Wenxue tilted her head uncomfortably, noticing that her breath seemed unusually warm.

"There's still a little bit of pork crackling left. I saved some roasted snake meat last night, so we'll have pork crackling and wild vegetable soup and snake meat for this meal."

There's only one wild egg left at home, so we can't just eat it randomly; we need to think of another way to get rid of it.

Both of them perked up: "Okay, as long as there's meat!"

Ye Wenxue raised an eyebrow and smiled. Just as she was about to ask Shuangshuang to wake up the few brothers who were fast asleep, she suddenly noticed that her face was blushing abnormally.

It doesn't look like someone who just woke up, it's more like...

Ye Wenxue's eyes sharpened, and she reached out to touch her forehead. As soon as she touched it, she felt the burning heat transmitted from her fingertips.

Ye Wenxue felt a surge of anxiety and quickly extinguished the fire in the makeshift stove, then pressed her face against Shuangshuang's forehead.

A moment later, she cupped Shuangshuang's face in her hands, her brows furrowing unnaturally:

"It seems like you have a fever... How are you feeling now?"

Shuangshuang looked a little listless and buried her head in Ye Wenxue's arms:

"Mother, I feel unwell."

Upon hearing that her voice was also a little hoarse, Ye Wenxue quickly brought over a bowl of boiled water:

"You drink first, I'll go check on the others."

Even though they were running a high fever, they were still able to come out of the cave; the others were probably in even worse condition.

Ye Wenxue went into the cave and saw that it was indeed true.

The faces of the children, which were usually fair and delicate after being washed, were unusually flushed.

While the other children were half asleep, they suddenly felt a warm, cool hand on their foreheads and instinctively moved it closer to their palms.

Dazhuang struggled to open his eyes and immediately saw Ye Wenxue: "Mother?"

Ye Wenxue sighed, "Why is everyone running a high fever..."

One by one?

Da Zhuang's head sluggishly turned twice before he slowly opened his eyes and turned his head to look at San Yuan and Si Wang, whose little faces were burning red.

He swayed and leaned closer, reaching out to touch her, his heart pounding with anxiety.

Dazhuang knew that several children in Shanqing Village had high fevers and died within two days.

Even after consulting with the village doctor.

Now, in the mountains, there are no doctors, no herbs, nothing at all. I'm afraid...

He forced himself to calm down, lest Ye Wenxue and Shuangshuang panic too much:

"It's alright, Mother, I'll go find some herbs to brew... It'll be alright, everything will be fine..."

Dazhuang struggled to his feet but stumbled halfway down. Ye Wenxue quickly helped him sit down.

"Alright, stop fussing and lie down. I'll think of something."

Da Zhuang sat there blankly for a few moments before slowly coming to his senses.

He knew his body couldn't take it anymore, and he rattled off a few commonly used herbs that his father had taught him:

"Honeysuckle, Bupleurum, Licorice..."

Ye Wenxue listened patiently as he listed several kinds of herbs. She then mentally searched her spatial storage for a while and finally found a large box of cold medicine.

It's still sweet.

When she goes on missions, she usually only carries medicine to stop bleeding and treat wounds.

However, one of his strategists was physically weak and rarely suffered injuries or bleeding, but he was always catching colds and having high fevers.

Considering his intelligence, Ye Wenxue made an exception and placed a large box of cold medicine in her spatial medicine box for emergency use.

Now it comes in handy.

She calmed Dazhuang, whose eyes were filled with panic, went out and made a packet of cold medicine for each of the children, then carefully served them the medicine.

They sat together on a thin blanket, holding a bowl of strangely colored hot water. After gulping it down, they spoke with a blank and helpless expression:

"Mother, should I..."

She didn't say everything aloud, but everyone present understood the meaning behind Shuangshuang's words.

Dazhuang hung his head, clutching the withered grass under the quilt tightly, somewhat unwilling.

They finally managed to escape the man-eating Shanqing Village, avoiding several dangers, traveling more than ten miles and crossing several mountains.

I just found a great place to settle down, but before I could even build a house, plant crops, or raise livestock, and before I could even enjoy the good life for a few days, how could this suddenly happen...?

Da Zhuang looked at San Yuan and Si Wang, who were still unconscious with high fever, and closed his eyes in resentment, wiping away the tears in his eyes.

Ye Wenxue carefully fed Yuanyuan a bowl of cold medicine as well, wiping her mouth while constantly comforting her:

"How could that be! You've been traveling under the scorching sun for several days straight, and you've encountered several dangers. You've been on edge the whole time. After settling down in the valley and taking a bath yesterday, you finally relaxed."

"All the fatigue and exhaustion from the past few days came rushing back, and I felt a bit unwell. Plus, the cave was damp and poorly ventilated, making it difficult to sleep soundly..."

"After you finish taking your medicine, go outside and get some sunshine. Your fever will go down quickly."

I wonder if modern cold medicine could cure high fever in ancient times...

Ye Wenxue hesitated for a moment, then gritted her teeth and said, "You all stay here and wait in the cave. I'll go gather some herbs and be back in half an hour, okay?"

Shuangshuang felt that her breath was scalding hot, and her mind was a complete mess.

She wondered if her father had come to pick her up.

Then she thought about how she couldn't fall asleep, because she had to take care of Sanyuan and Siwang, whose condition was getting worse.

She stammered and shook her head: "No...no, it's not safe outside."

Ye Wenxue finished cleaning up the bowls and looked helplessly at Shuangshuang and Dazhuang, who was leaning against the wall to get up:

"Mother is very capable and not afraid of danger. Don't worry, I will definitely be back in half an hour."

Before the two could reply, Ye Wenxue quickly tore off a few pieces of cloth, then went outside the cave and brought back a bucket of cold water and a pot of hot water to Dazhuang.
