Chapter 45 Something Happened

It's only been less than half a month since it was planted and it's already bearing fruit. It's ripening so quickly, it's like a dream.

Dazhuang found it incredible.

Dazhuang thought the vegetables in the garden were growing too fast, while Ye Wenxue thought they were growing too slowly.

If her wood-type ability hadn't been reduced to its original form, and hadn't been supplemented with spiritual spring water, she could have grown overnight.

Ye Wenxue glanced at Su Jiu and Sui Ye, who were also squatting by the vegetable patch studying it carefully, and said in a daze, "I don't know either. I just picked them randomly in the mountains. They should be edible, right? I'll try stir-frying them when they're ripe."

"Oh..." Da Zhuang's gaze passed over the sprawling sweet potato vines and the corn stalks that were almost three yuan tall, and he cleverly changed the subject, "I want to go to the old forest to find some mountain produce that will ripen in the fall. The persimmons and chestnuts we had at home have long been gone, so it'll be good to replenish them."

He pointed at Su Jiu: "Dr. Su also wants to go back to his residence, so we can go together."

Su Jiu put on airs and nodded slowly.

Having served as his mentor for a few days, he felt his status was higher than before, and Ye Wenxue would probably feel more at ease.

Ye Wenxue was worried about him, but she was relieved about Dazhuang.

The child absorbed everything he learned from Su Jiu and Sui Ye like a sponge, including knowledge and character, and became more shrewd and capable than before.

— Suiye is mainly used as a negative example.

Ye Wenxue was thinking of taking some time to teach a few children martial arts, so that they would have more ability to protect themselves:

"You can go, but you can't wander around. You have to be back in the valley before dark. Oh, and bring the geese with you as guards; it'll make the journey safer."

Su Jiu retorted, "You're underestimating me! Do you think I can't even beat a goose?"

Several children, including Sanyuan, nodded at the same time.

After spending some time together, they had figured out Mr. Su Jiu's fighting ability. He might not even be able to beat Da Zhuang, let alone Da E.

"Quack!" the goose exclaimed in agreement.

Su Jiu endured it and went back to the cave to start packing her things.

Ye Wenxue picked some sweet potato vines and stir-fried them simply. Not to mention the children who had been eating wild vegetables all day long, even Sui Ye and Su Jiu, who were used to eating good food, were amazed by the taste.

Especially Suiye, who had never eaten sweet potato vines before and wondered why this stuff didn't seem to exist in the capital.

When repeatedly questioned about the variety of sweet potato vines, Ye Wenxue always brushed it off by saying she didn't know, and the others stopped pressing the matter.

As long as there's food, it doesn't matter what kind it is.

Ye Wenxue and Suiye went back and forth between the lake and the valley to build houses, while Dazhuang and Su Jiu went out of the valley to find mountain products. They both continued to guard the cave where they smoked cured meat and added firewood when needed.

Sanyuan then took over the important task of watering the vegetable garden.

In just seven days, Dazhuang cleared two small vegetable plots. This time, he planted some sprouted wheat, which he would have to water depending on the weather.

Ye Wenxue didn't understand. Su Jiu only knew medicine, and Sui Ye... knew nothing. He relied entirely on Da Zhuang to learn by himself from the books left by Cheng Xiucai.

Da Zhuang truly lived up to his reputation as a capable villain. He learned, planted, and practiced simultaneously, managing to successfully germinate the wheat seeds and plant them safely.

Even Ye Wenxue was filled with admiration after seeing it.

However, the wheat seeds, which were not stimulated by wood-type abilities and were only watered with spiritual spring water, grew slightly slower than sweet potatoes, corn, and chili peppers.

The growth is consistent with that of the cabbages, radishes, and soybeans planted earlier, which is in line with the growth pattern of plants.

Following his elder brother's instructions, Sanyuan carefully watered the plants and then pulled Siwang to review the characters Su had taught him.

He traced lines on the ground with a twig: "This is the character 'Cheng,' our surname. My mother's surname is 'Ye'..."

Siwang looked miserable. He really didn't want to learn. He was only a little over four years old and it wasn't time for him to start learning yet!

Siwang racked his brains and came up with an excuse: "I'll go help my second sister add firewood."

San Yuan couldn't stop them in time and shook his head helplessly.

When Siwang entered the cave, his heart sank even further.

They were holding charcoal-black branches and writing on the stone walls on both sides of the cave, leaving the cave covered in writing.

Siwang put down the chopped firewood and turned to leave.

When Dazhuang returned carrying a full basket of mountain produce and a bag of brown rice, he saw Siwang sitting sadly next to the basket where Yuanyuan was, muttering something like "don't want to learn" and "don't want to learn".

“It’s good for kids to read more books, but don’t corrupt Yuanyuan.” Dazhuang stepped forward and tapped Siwang on the head.

Siwang covered his head and sighed heavily. He stood up and took the bundle from Dazhuang's hands: "Brother, where did you get this brown rice?"

"Mr. Su said he has a lot of rice stored up, enough to last until the year after next, so he simply gave us two bags as an apology for the food and drinks we've been eating and drinking for free in the valley these past few days."

"We'd better keep a close eye on it; we can't let Suiye waste the grain again."

"Okay, this time put the rice where he can't reach it."

"Big brother..."

"Um?"

"If he can't reach it, we can't reach it either."

The conversation ended with Siwang getting another knock on the head.

After putting away the grain, Dazhuang pulled Siwang by the ear, carried the basket to the bayberry tree, and watched his mother build the house while cleaning the moss and dirt left on the mountain produce they had collected.

The house has only been built with a rough wooden frame; it's not time to lay bricks yet.

Ye Wenxue and Suiye have been taking turns making mud bricks and driving wooden stakes these past few days. They are exhausted, especially Suiye, who has never done heavy or strenuous work before. He has developed several blisters and calluses on his hands.

It grew right next to the calluses he had developed from practicing martial arts and spear fighting.

Sui Ye had wanted to quit countless times, but Ye Wenxue had forcibly suppressed it with words of encouragement and a delicious meal to comfort him, which was why he had barely managed to keep working until today.
