The goose was too quick to escape, and Dazhuang, holding Yuanyuan, couldn't easily stop it.
Dazhuang cried out anxiously, "Mother! The goose, the goose has run away!"
Ye Wenxue's eyes lit up with joy, and she quickly chased after him, carrying the earthenware pot in one hand:
"Dazhuang, Shuangshuang, Sanyuan, Siwang, don't run around, Mom is going to get some meat to eat!"
The goose had been tied up for half a day and hadn't eaten much. It hadn't run far before Ye Wenxue caught up with it and grabbed it by the neck.
Struggling to no avail, the goose flapped its wings and kept calling towards the haystack ahead.
Ye Wenxue parted the weeds to take a look.
Three eggs, neither too big nor too small, nestled quietly in the grass.
Ye Wenxue blinked slowly, somewhat incredulous, but her movements as she picked up the wild eggs were surprisingly swift.
She placed the three wild eggs in the earthenware pot and did not return immediately.
Instead, he carried a goose in one hand and a ceramic pot in the other, and carefully searched through the nearby pile of dry grass.
They soon found two more wild eggs.
After washing the diapers and hanging them on the cart, they saw Ye Wenxue sitting silently in the grass for a long time, so they ran over with Siwang.
"Mom, what are you doing? We'll help you."
Ye Wenxue smiled and handed them the earthenware pot to look at: "We found a few wild eggs, so we've got meat and vegetables for lunch."
Shuangshuang and Siwang suddenly opened their eyes wide:
"Mother, let's look around too, maybe there are still some."
As soon as they finished speaking, they both disappeared into the withered grass, bent down, parted the grass, and peeked out, all in one smooth motion.
These are wild eggs!
Since the severe drought at the end of spring, they hadn't smelled meat, and they'd barely seen eggs, let alone eaten them.
Siwang was also eager to join him and followed him into the bushes.
Ye Wenxue glanced at Dazhuang and Sanyuan, who were somewhat anxious and unaware of the situation, by the cart, and straightened up:
"Don't go too far, Mom will go cook first."
Shuangshuang and Siwang responded without looking up.
Ye Wenxue turned around, picked up the goose and the earthenware pot, and returned to the cart, where she retied the goose.
"Sanyuan, go and pick some grass for the goose to eat. It's a lucky goose; thanks to it, I was able to find a few wild eggs."
Sanyuan peeked into the earthenware pot at the wild eggs, and immediately beamed with joy, nodding emphatically:
"Okay!"
Watching Sanyuan rush off to the puddle to find some tender wild grass, Ye Wenxue rummaged through the few belongings on the cart and found two bags of brown rice and a bundle of wild vegetable buns.
At a glance, there were about ten wild vegetable buns.
It was made from wild vegetables that the original owner found after traveling for several days after learning about the famine.
Ye Wenxue felt the complex emotions rising in her chest and secretly vowed to take good care of the children.
She was all alone and unattached in the modern world, so her desire to go back wasn't very strong.
On the contrary, she felt inexplicably worried about these pitiful and miserable children.
Da Zhuang was puzzled as he watched her sighing and looking at the wild vegetable buns.
"Mother, do you want to eat wild vegetable buns?"
Ye Wenxue shook her head, smiled, and changed the subject, pointing to an inconspicuous black jar:
"What's in there? Is it edible?"
Da Zhuang remained silent.
Ye Wenxue looked at him, puzzled.
Dazhuang bit his lower lip tightly: "Yes...yes..."
Seeing Dazhuang's conflicted and hesitant state, Ye Wenxue instantly remembered what was inside—the ashes of the original owner's husband, Cheng Xiucai.
She awkwardly raised her hand to cover the scabbed wound on her forehead:
"Mother remembers... So many things happened today that it has confused me."
Dazhuang blinked his dark eyes and softly hummed in agreement.
Ye Wenxue grabbed three handfuls of brown rice and put them into the earthenware pot, pretending nothing had happened:
"I'll go cook something. You rest here. You still have a long way to go this afternoon."
Dazhuang nodded obediently.
Ye Wenxue put down the two wild eggs, took the nearly empty oil and salt, turned her back and walked to the puddle.
After Sanyuan gathered a bunch of wild grass to feed the geese, he happily ran off to find wild eggs with Shuangshuang and Siwang.
There was no one else by the puddle.
Ye Wenxue pretended to scoop water from the puddle, but actually took the opportunity to pour in the spiritual spring water to wash and cook rice.
Then they went to the simple stove, lit a fire, placed the earthenware pot on it, and cooked brown rice soup.
She crouched down to add dry firewood to the stove, her gaze wistful.
If she had known she was going to time travel and that her wood-type superpowers would be reverted to their original form afterward, she would have filled the small space with all sorts of meat.
Now, things are much better. The space contains a first-aid kit, various seeds, self-defense tools, spiritual spring water, and several bottles of oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and so on.
There was nothing that could be eaten immediately.
But since I've already worn them, there's no use regretting it now.
Ye Wenxue quickly composed herself, glanced at the three wild eggs lying to the side, and quickly figured out what to do.
With limited resources, all she could think of was making rice porridge with an egg.
While patiently waiting for the brown rice soup to cook, gurgling sounds could be heard from the withered grass behind us.
Ye Wenxue called out to the three children who were about to search through the bushes:
"If you can't find it, come back. Don't go too far."
Shuangshuang and Siwang replied at the same time, "Understood, Mother."
Sanyuan was a beat slow, then responded with a soft "hmm".
The kids responded quickly, but they were slow and hesitant, and even after a while they were still searching persistently.
A simple stove cannot be left unattended.
Ye Wenxue stood up and looked at the three of them. Seeing that they hadn't gone far, she let them continue.
Soon the brown rice soup boiled and cooked through, bubbling and releasing its aroma.
Ye Wenxue quickly cracked the three wild eggs into a bowl one by one, and secretly added a little white sugar to enhance the flavor.
