Chapter Fifty-Eight: Selling Cold Noodles (Part 1)

A ray of golden sunlight shone on Liang Shuyan's stall.

Two rented tables were wiped clean and covered with tablecloths for the guests to eat at!

On a simple stove, there were several delicate little bowls, one containing green jelly and the other white jelly, topped with vegetable water and chili oil. Zhang held a small bowl and scooped some cilantro from it into each bowl of jelly.

In her past life, she also knew how to attract business, explain and promote products, and build relationships; these were not difficult tasks for her.

Most of the townspeople were unfamiliar with her face. She was wearing a straw hat and was calling out loudly.

In this era, only shouting can attract customers' attention.

"We have liangfen (cold mung bean jelly), a refreshing and chewy liangfen, and our delicate little steamed buns!"

"New store opening! The first 30 customers get a free tasting! Don't miss out!"

Jin Dashan and Jin Erniu shouted at the top of their lungs: "Delicious jelly noodles, exquisite steamed buns with generous portions, steamed buns with jelly noodles, it's so delicious!"

After some shouting, a customer finally appeared at the stall. The first customer was a middle-aged woman wearing patched clothes. Her eyes were fixed on the cold noodles in the bowl, and she seemed a little hesitant.

"This is jelly? Why is it colored? Could it be poisonous?"

In ancient times, food rarely contained color, so their suspicions about the presence of color in food were understandable.

Liang Shuyan smiled slightly: "Hehe, this is not a poisonous thing. You know spinach, right? It's made from spinach juice. It's natural and harmless, and it contains the nutrients found in vegetables. You can eat it without worry."

"What's that red thing on top of me?"

Zhang walked over and said politely, "Sister-in-law, this is a free sample, no money required. Come in and try it, you'll know how it tastes. To be honest, we ourselves can't resist, we each eat several bowls!"

"Well, then, I'll try it. It's free, right?"

Liang Shuyan handed a bowl of cold noodles with sauce to the woman, and Jin Dashan also handed over one of his small steamed buns, placing it in the small bowl.

The woman glanced at the exquisite bowl, pointed at it, and said, "Your bowl is beautiful too, it even has flowers on it."

The woman picked up a piece of jelly with her chopsticks and brought it to her mouth. She smelled a sour and spicy aroma, and her brows furrowed slightly.

Before I could even taste what it was like, the jelly slid smoothly down my throat and into my stomach, feeling incredibly refreshing.

The woman finally picked up the bowl and poured the broth down her throat: "Hmm, not bad, this is the taste, good, delicious, and a little spicy."

The woman finished her bowl of cold noodles, looking like she wanted more. Liang Shuyan seemed to notice something and took the bowl from her.

"Our cold noodles are the same price as steamed buns, five coins a bowl. If you want some, I'll add some extra for you!"

The woman's clothes clearly indicated that she was living a poor life. A bowl of cold noodles cost five coins, which she finished in two bites. However, a large white steamed bun from outside only cost two coins. After considering it in her mind, she still felt that it was not worth it.

As she reached the door, she suddenly remembered something and asked, "Could you give me a bowl of cold noodles? I'd like to take it home for my mother-in-law to try."

Liang Shuyan was in a dilemma: "Some elderly people and children are at home, so there is no way to take them back. Now there are disposable bowls and chopsticks, but there were no disposable bowls and chopsticks in ancient times. Besides, I bought these bowls from the mall at a high price. I can't just buy a bowl for a serving of cold noodles and give it away, can I?"

Jin Erniu understood the woman's meaning and immediately said, "Mother, let me take her back and bring the bowl back with me, okay?"

The woman casually replied, "No, our home is quite far away. Well, let's forget about it then?"

Zhang was a little confused: "That's strange. Does this woman want our bowl? Why is she unwilling to let Erniu go with her to get the bowl?"

Erniu curled his lip: "Judging from that woman's clothes, she just doesn't want to spend that little bit of money!"

Liang Shuyan disagreed, saying, "No, it's probably because her home is really far away!"

Jin Dashan and Jin Erniu continued to hawk their wares: "Cold mung bean jelly! Delicious cold mung bean jelly! Free samples, five coins a serving! Don't miss out!"

Jin Erniu was a little tired. Looking at the people sitting at the stall who were all offering free samples, he started to slump his head and complain: "Is our method wrong? We shouldn't have let these people try the samples. Not a single one of them is genuinely buying anything. They're all just trying to get a free sample."

"Don't say that yet. Let's hurry up and call out to them. Surely someone will be willing to sell. Besides, we sell steamed buns, don't we? How could no one be willing to spend money to sell such delicious jelly? I don't believe it!"

After thinking for a moment, the two of them each picked up a bowl and began to eat heartily: "Delicious, really delicious, mmm, sour and spicy, so satisfying!"

The two brothers ate a steamed bun and a cold noodle dish, making passersby drool.

Surprisingly, all this fuss actually brought in two customers. Looking at the jelly in front of them, one said, "Let's try a free serving!"

Zhang politely brought a bowl of cold noodles to the two old women and placed it on the table.

The two old women looked to be around fifty years old, each carrying a basket. They had just sat down when two children ran up behind them.

"Grandma, we want to eat too!"

"My grandson's isn't free, is it?"

After hesitating for a moment, Zhang said with a smile, "Aunties, the tasting at our store is only for you. As for your grandson, he'll have to pay for it!"

Upon hearing this, the old woman stood up and left. Dashan walked over and said, "Auntie, you brought your grandson with you, but we only have one chance to sample the food. Think about it, either you sample it, or your grandson samples it. What do you think?"

"Grandma, I want to try some!" A chubby little boy sat down at the table, slurped down a bowl of cold noodles, and banged on the bowl with his chopsticks, shouting, "Grandma, I want more! It's so delicious!"

Another old woman sat down and said, "Give me a bowl, I'll eat it. It's only five coins, right? Sit down and have a taste!"

The two old women finally sat down and ate two servings of cold noodles, which was considered a small income.

After noon, the market became less and less crowded. The rented table also cost money, so Jin Dashan cleaned it and returned it.

Liang Shuyan rested her chin on her hands and suddenly thought of a problem. After setting up her stall in the morning, not a single wealthy person had passed by. All of them were poor people. They came only to sample the food for free.

How can you sell if you choose the wrong target audience?

"You want to sell a million-dollar mansion? How can you be living in a slum? Are you kidding me?" She mentally mocked herself.
