The men behind her stared wide-eyed in surprise, pointing at Liang Shuyan and asking, "What did you use to knock down our boss?"
Liang Shuyan walked towards the group of burly men in front of her. The remaining men abandoned their grain and cart and fled in panic.
Dashan rubbed his eyes and glanced at Liang Shuyan: "Mother, are you... are you alright?"
Using the system's special function, she quickly concealed the stun gun and helped Jin Dashan up: "Mother is alright, how could you be so abrupt? If I hadn't been carrying rat poison, wouldn't you have been in great danger?"
Da Shan stumbled to his feet and hurriedly checked the grain on the cart: "Mother, thank goodness, the grain is all here, otherwise, we would have starved to death!"
Seeing the burly man collapse to the ground with a thud, Li Zheng was even more surprised and stepped forward to stop Liang Shuyan: "Aunt Dashan, how did you take down this bandit?"
"Oh, before we fled the famine, my house had a lot of rats, so I bought some rat poison from the pharmacy and kept it with me. Who knew this person would be so strange? He smelled the rat poison and actually collapsed on the ground?"
"He collapsed just from smelling rat poison. Could it be that he ate rat poison and died from it? Did you... did you give him that rat poison?"
Da Shan stepped forward and hurriedly explained, "That's not how it is, Li Zheng. Those bandits are tall and strong, and they have swords on them. How could my mother, a village woman, possibly be fed rat poison?"
Everyone nodded in agreement, agreeing with what Dashan said. Seeing this, Erniu led a group of people over and rushed forward to hug Liang Shuyan.
"Mother, are you alright?"
Liang Shuyan shook her head. Seeing her son and daughter-in-law looking nervous, she suddenly felt that it was an honorable thing to have traveled back to ancient times and become someone else's mother.
“Lizheng, no matter what, my mother defeated that man and saved our grain. Why ask so many questions now? Hurry up, everyone, go forward, sort out your own grain, and take it back!”
Li Zheng stood aside, watching as everyone carried the grain to their respective homes, before leading them back.
After a while, Liang Shuyan felt tired and went back to bed.
The murmurs among the crowd continued unabated, as if Liang Shuyan had just appeared out of nowhere and saved the village's grain. Some listened, while others gossiped.
"So, Aunt Dashan is our benefactor. Otherwise, wouldn't our food have been stolen by these bandits? Not to mention the adults, how would we, with a bunch of children following behind us, survive?"
"Yes, that's right. No matter what methods they used, the most important thing is that our food was not damaged."
Li Zheng looked puzzled, scratching his chin with his fingers: "This rat poison can knock you out with just one whiff. When did rat poison become so effective?"
“Lizheng, do you think that Aunt Dashan was lying just now? Actually, I saw that she was holding something shiny in her hand. It was that thing that touched that strong man and he fell to the ground.”
The speaker was Li Yonghe, a hunter from the village. He was full of curiosity about Liang Shuyan and kept urging Li Zheng on, as if Li Zheng was about to drag Liang Shuyan up and interrogate her.
Liang Shuyan opened her eyes, only to hear Li Yonghe's laughter and muttering, "Lizheng, look at this old woman, she's completely different from before. Was she ever this good to her mother-in-law? Was she ever this caring towards her children? Today I clearly saw her holding something shiny in her hand, the man had just collapsed, and she said it was rat poison? You've lived with me for decades, do you believe that rat poison can knock someone out just by smelling it?"
Liang Shuyan's lips twitched twice, and a memory of the original owner surfaced in her mind. This Li Yonghe had been instigating Li Zheng in her previous life, giving all the good land in the village to his family, while the original owner's family was left to cultivate some barren mountain land. The original owner wanted to seek justice, but Li Zheng deprived her of the right to cultivate the good land on the grounds that the original owner's husband did not farm.
Li Zheng was hesitating about how to interrogate Liang Shuyan when she discovered that Liang Shuyan was already standing behind her.
"What's wrong, Li Yonghe? Do you think you should go fight the bandits today? No matter what method I used, at least I protected everyone's food. You're so jealous, and you keep urging me on in front of reason. What are you up to?"
Li Yonghe turned around and saw Liang Shuyan. He clenched his fists tightly and said, "What nonsense are you talking about? Am I right? I clearly saw you knock that man down with a shiny object. Why are you lying to us and saying that the man smelled rat poison? What, why don't you show me the rat poison and let me smell it? If I faint, then I'm a petty person who's meddling!"
Upon hearing this, Li Zheng thought it was a good idea; it wouldn't offend anyone and would prevent others from becoming suspicious.
When Liu learned that it was Li Yonghe who had come to make things difficult for her mother-in-law, she grabbed a kitchen knife and ran towards Li Yonghe, saying, "You despicable person! My mother-in-law worked so hard to protect everyone's grain, and instead of being grateful, you're here instigating Li Zheng! If I don't kill you today, I'll have lived in vain!"
Liang Shuyan calmly called out, "Second son's wife, don't do this. Just do as Li Yonghe said. Go back and take that packet of rat poison from the pocket of your mother's gray coat, and let this suspicious person smell it. But I'm warning you, if anything goes wrong, don't blame me for not warning you!"
Li Zheng looked at Li Yonghe with his eyes, as if seeking his opinion.
"Li Zheng, don't worry. If I were to smell that rat poison today and lose my life as a result, all the descendants of the Li family will listen to me: we will absolutely not seek revenge against the Jin family!"
Liang Shuyan glanced at Liu Shi, who was secretly delighted: "Since Mother-in-law said so, that means that next, it's not me who should be worried about my mother-in-law, but that meddlesome Li Yonghe who's probably going to be in trouble!"
Zhang was always timid. When she saw Liu go home to get rat poison, she hurriedly stopped Liu, saying, "Second son's wife, you can't do this. What if the rat poison doesn't work? Wouldn't I be embarrassed?"
Thinking of her mother-in-law's instructions, Liu wrapped her arms around herself and asked, "But sister-in-law, what if it works?"
The villagers blinked and said, "No, why does Li Yonghe insist on smelling this rat poison? Since Aunt Dashan says it's rat poison, then it's rat poison. Anyway, it saved everyone's food."
