Qian'er is different from General Li; Qian'er is devoted to him.
Qian'er's body stiffened; his mind was entirely focused on his master.
It is impossible for the Emperor to sow discord between General Li and Qian'er, who are master and disciple.
Qian'er knelt on one knee, clasped his hands in a fist salute, and refused his father's offer: "Your Majesty, fighting on the battlefield is my duty, and I dare not ask for a reward. I beg you to rescind your order!"
The late emperor glanced at Li Zheng, saw a smile on his lips, and silently nodded. Then, his expression changed.
He said seriously and coldly:
"Gu Qian, how dare you! Do you know that a ruler's word is law?"
Gu Qian: "This humble general knows, but this humble general only wishes to be a leisurely general."
He felt indignant on behalf of his master and didn't want to upset him.
Unexpectedly, his words enraged his father, the emperor.
"If you won't listen to reason, you'll have to suffer the consequences!" The Emperor slammed his fist on the table and stood up, only to see General Li rise immediately after him, clasp his hands in a fist salute, and say:
"Your Majesty, Qian'er was young and impetuous, it was his fault, and I apologize to you on his behalf."
Then, he glanced at Gu Qian and said, "Qian'er, why don't you apologize to His Majesty?"
Serving a ruler is like serving a tiger; to avoid trouble, Gu Qian could only nod and say, "This humble general is guilty."
The emperor laughed heartily, defusing the awkward situation.
"It's settled then, Gu Qian. Sigh, you're still young. You should rein in your temper. From now on, you should properly assist my eldest son."
After he finished speaking, a murmur rippled through the crowd.
The eldest prince?
They whispered amongst themselves, their gazes darting back and forth between him, his eldest brother, and the third prince.
The third prince sat in a four-wheeled carriage, his eyes lowered.
The third prince originally had no interest in the position of crown prince, and now that he has become a cripple, he is even more detached from it.
He was indignant and felt extremely wronged, but he never spoke up.
He knew that this would make his father despise him.
Father Emperor always joked, but this time, he took it seriously.
Before all the civil and military officials, the eldest prince bowed deeply to the emperor, then smiled slightly at Qian'er.
"General Gu is truly an honor to the nation."
Qian'er nodded simply, her eyes looking at him.
He knew that Qian'er was also standing up for him.
He shook his head at Qian'er.
The throne will be his sooner or later.
He was determined to win!
————————
He succeeded; Qian'er helped him obtain the throne.
But now, upon reflection, he hasn't had a single day of happiness.
He Lin sat alone in front of Li Wenshu's grave.
He seemed to have forgotten the time.
On the way, Li Zheng held Gu Xiaoran's hand and walked slowly towards home.
Behind them, Zhu Juan and Shan Dian followed quietly, their feelings of returning home much heavier than when they came.
Gu Xiaoran thought of Ye Shi's heartbroken face.
"Master, are you really not going to look for Aunt Shu'er anymore?"
"I'm not looking anymore."
“But…” Gu Xiaoran hesitated for a moment, then walked up to Li Zheng, “Grandmaster, hug me.”
Normally, whenever Gu Xiaoran asks to be carried, Li Zheng adopts a serious attitude and tells her to walk on her own.
But today, he was different from usual.
He yielded to Gu Xiaoran; her small body and warm touch brought Li Zheng peace of mind.
With his home just a short distance away, Li Zheng was once again caught in a web of inner conflict.
How should he face his beloved wife at home?
He slowed his pace, but what he had to face, he still had to face.
The courtyard gate was right in front of him. He reached out and gently pushed it, only to find that the carriage that had been in the courtyard had been removed.
"Autumn Clouds".
He cautiously called out into the house, and saw Mrs. Ye wearing an apron walking out of the kitchen.
