Chapter 13 A Chance Encounter Late at Night

Qiu Dayu regretted his decision after just one dig; it was really difficult to dig without a shovel. "Qiu Yan, I don't want these peaches."

He put down the peach and was about to leave, but could he really get away?

Qiu Yan had finally found a free laborer, so she had to make good use of him.

She knew perfectly well that her father's last military pay had been taken by that scoundrel of a younger uncle to pay off debts. If it weren't for Qiu Dayu, she wouldn't have been able to get only three copper coins from Madam Yang.

...

Qiu Yan searched diligently along the way, while Qiu Dayu followed along with a long face, reluctantly digging. In the end, besides his hands being covered in mud, he also had... five peaches.

These peaches were truly hard-won.

Qiu Dayu began to beg for mercy, "Qiu Yan, that's enough, that's enough. Five peaches are enough for me. Please, I'm begging you, just let me go."

"Alright, that's enough for today. Qiu Dayu, listen carefully, this peach is for you alone. If I find out you've given it to someone else, it won't be as simple as just digging up the roots!" If Qiu Yan hadn't been so desperate for herbs that she had to ask Qiu Dayu for help again.

In the present day, after graduating from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, she joined the army. She has read many herbal classics and is familiar with medicinal herbs.

What Qiu Dayu just dug up were three Salvia miltiorrhiza plants and two Glycyrrhiza uralensis plants.

Qiu Dayu felt as if he had been granted a pardon, and ran away with the peaches in his arms!

Is this all for today? Could it be that Qiu Yan is going to dig again tomorrow? He decided that if he encounters Qiu Yan in the mountains again, he will take a detour.

Why shouldn't he give it to someone else? He didn't believe that Qiu Yan could have eyes that could see a thousand miles and spy on him.

He had just reached the village entrance when he ran into Village Chief Zhao and his daughter Zhao Yuanyuan.

"Village Chief, Yuanyuan, where are you... going?" Qiu Dayu stammered as soon as he saw Village Chief Zhao.

Zhao Yuanyuan asked, somewhat puzzled, "Qiu Dayu, why are you only getting back now?"

“I…I helped Qiu Yan dig up some wild…weeds in the mountains.”

"Weeds?" Zhao Yuanyuan was even more confused.

Village Chief Zhao dismissed Qiu Dayu's words as mere fabrication, and glared angrily at him, "Qiu Dayu, you brat, when are you going to pay me back the money you owe me!"

If it weren't for Uncle Qiu's sake, Village Chief Zhao wouldn't have lent the money to Qiu Dayu.

As a result, this rascal borrowed it for two years.

Now that Boss Qiu has passed away, Qiu Dayu is even less able to repay the money.

Because of this, his wife made a lot of fuss with him, and it cost a full five taels of silver!

"Please give me a little more time... Don't worry, I will definitely pay back the money."

Qiu Dayu's face turned bright red with embarrassment. He glanced down at Village Chief Zhao, hurriedly stuffed the five peaches in his arms into Zhao Yuanyuan's hands, and ran off. "Village Chief, these peaches are a gift from me."

Village Chief Zhao watched the departing figure, his beard bristling and eyes wide with anger, "That damned brat!"

Zhao Yuanyuan stared at Qiu Dayu's flustered appearance and found it somewhat amusing: "Dad, it's all your fault, you'd lend money to just anyone!"

Qiu Yan and her group had a fairly good harvest from their trip to the mountains.

Today, Qiu Yan not only dug up some wild vegetables and mushrooms, but also picked peaches and dug up medicinal herbs. She is full of hope for her future.

We may be poor, but we have to eat our food little by little, earn our money little by little, and we can't get fat overnight. Nobody can become fat overnight.

Qiu Yan was never one to complain. The poorer her life was, the more determined she was to make it thrive.

That evening, after she finished washing the wild peaches, she didn't forget to tell Qiu Xu to send a few to the Li family. Ye Shi said that Qiu Yan was too polite and always wanted to repay her favor.

The peaches have a faint, pleasant fragrance. They are delicate and not sticky, and they are crisp and refreshing when you bite into them.

It's juicy with a subtle fragrance, bittersweet, making you want to eat another one after finishing the first.

After dinner, Qiu Yan processed the herbs she had just dug and hung them to dry.

Another busy day. Qiu Xu and Qiu Ling'er ate dinner and went to bed early.

After they fell asleep, Qiu Yan took off their clothes, changed her own clothes, and went to the stream in front of the door.

Because she had gone to the county town and the mountains today, her sweat had dried several times, and she felt uncomfortable all over.

I was feeling weak yesterday and fell asleep as soon as I lay down at night. I had left these clothes lying around all day, so I had to wash them.

By the stream, all three of their clothes were sticky and it took Qiu Yan a long time to wash them.

Without soap, she always felt that her clothes weren't clean enough, but now she really had no other way but to wash them with water.

Another day, when she goes to the mountains again, she will see if there are any soapberry trees, because she will not only need to wash clothes, but also wash her hair and take a bath.

After washing the clothes, Qiu Yan washed her hair and face with clean water, took out a towel to dry her hair, and then simply wiped her body.

Finally, she took off her shoes and socks, soaked her feet in the water, and prepared to wash away her fatigue.

The water flowed over her feet, cool and refreshing.

Looking up at the upstream stream, the bright moon is reflected in the water. The shadows of the trees sway lightly in the gentle breeze.

The temperature in the air was just right, neither cold nor hot, and a gentle breeze caressed my face and ruffled my hair.

In a daze, Qiu Yan had a strange feeling that she had not traveled through time, but was trapped in a dream, a dream from which she could not wake up.

Just as she was immersed in the beautiful night, a fleeting figure in the distance shattered her imagination.

Upon closer inspection, is it really a person?

Next to the figure, there was a horse tied up.

Luckily, she was brave enough; if it had been a frail young girl, she would have been scared half to death.

"who?"

After Qiu Yan finished asking, a childish voice came from the tree, "Daddy, is she talking to you?"

Qiu Yan was startled again. Because it was too dark to see clearly, she originally thought there was only one person in the tree, but she didn't expect there to be a little baby there as well.

As soon as the child's voice fell, two figures, one tall and one short, gracefully landed on the ground.

The man was dressed in all black, tall and slender, with his hair loosely tied in a high ponytail with a black ribbon. "Young lady, why are you out washing clothes so late at night? Aren't you afraid of attracting the attention of wild wolves?"

Qiu Yan looked intently at the man in front of her. She couldn't see his face clearly in the darkness, and she didn't know whose man he was. It was strange that he was lying in a tree with a child so late at night.

"No wolves, but there's a busybody! Who says you can't do laundry at night? As for you, taking a child out for a stroll late at night, you've got quite the fun!"

After Qiu Yan finished speaking, she didn't say anything more, picked up the wooden basin, and turned back to the courtyard.

The man in black stopped talking and just watched Qiu Yan's departing figure.

After a good night's sleep, Qiu Yan got up before dawn the next day, even before the rooster crowed.

She wanted to sleep in, but now that she was both an older sister and a mother, she couldn't afford to relax even a little.

Even if they only had enough cornmeal for a few days, Qiu Yan didn't want to drink it anymore.

She could accept drinking cornmeal porridge once or twice as a novelty, but she wouldn't be happy if it were every day.

Fortunately, she had suffered a lot in her previous life. If she had transmigrated into the body of a pampered rich girl, she probably would have died on her very first day.

This morning, she planned to go into town to sell wood ear mushrooms. As for the herbs, she would sell them together after she had dug up a lot, processed and dried them.
