Chapter 21 Acting Out of Kindness

Having money in your pocket gives you the confidence to buy things.

"Sister, how do you know so many ways to sell things?" Qiu Xu was completely puzzled. His sister used to have trouble speaking.

"I was forced into it. If the Yang family hadn't sold me out, I probably would never have changed. People can only unleash their potential when they are pushed to the brink."

"Then why does my sister know about herbs?"

“Uh…” Qiu Xu was only ten years old, but he was very smart and not easily fooled. Qiu Yan thought for a moment, “Isn’t there an old doctor in the village? I met him a few times when I was picking wild vegetables before. I happened to see him digging for medicinal herbs and remembered what they looked like. I didn’t expect that it would actually come in handy.”

Even though she knew the reason was somewhat far-fetched, Qiu Yan couldn't think of any other explanation.

Before, the original owner was just a typical farm girl, and she had never been exposed to anything outside of the world.

After Qiu Yan explained, Qiu Xu finally stopped asking questions. "I will follow my sister to learn about medicinal herbs in the future." Once he can earn money, he will definitely support his sister and younger sister.

"Okay." This younger brother, apart from being thoughtful and introverted, is truly without any flaws.

After selling the herbs, Qiu Yan first went to the bookstore and bought a copy of the Materia Medica. Although she knew about medicine, there were countless kinds of herbs, and she couldn't possibly remember what they all looked like.

Besides the Materia Medica, she also bought several books for early childhood education.

Of course, there is also a set of the Four Treasures of the Study.

Afterwards, she took her younger siblings to the market and bought a basket, three catties each of cabbage and potatoes, a small amount of scallions and garlic, three catties of mutton, two catties of spare ribs, and a carp.

I went back to the grocery store and bought some household items, including two large locks. I also bought some cooking supplies, seasonings, five catties each of flour and rice, and a bottle of vegetable oil from the grain and oil store.

No matter what, eating should always be the top priority. Children are growing and need to get the nutrition they need.

Finally, Qiu Yan didn't forget to buy two hair accessories for Xiao Ling'er, which made Xiao Ling'er extremely happy.

Qiu Yan was a little tired from carrying too much stuff today, so she took an oxcart from the neighboring Lingxi Village.

The two villages are very close to each other. Although Qiu Yan didn't know the people on the oxcart, they looked familiar.

After getting on the oxcart and exchanging a few simple pleasantries, they were able to start talking.

Because of the academy incident today, Qiu Yan's mind was filled with thoughts of sending her younger brother to school.

Although Lingnan Village does not have a village school, the neighboring Lingxi Village does, and most of the children from nearby villages study there.

Therefore, she did not forget to ask the villagers for information.

On their way back, unfortunately, they encountered Qiu Dayong's oxcart again.

Most of the people on the oxcart were from Lingnan Village, and they were all surprised when they saw Qiu Yan and her two companions.

"Have Qiu Yan and the others struck it rich? Not only do they have new clothes to wear, but they've also bought so many things."

"They even bought meat. Could it be that his father secretly left money for the three of them before?"

"It should be. Ever since they separated from the family, their lives have gotten better day by day. Last night, someone even smelled the aroma of meat in front of their courtyard."

"I heard that she met a rich man and didn't even want that kid Zhao Zheng anymore."

"Shh...don't talk nonsense about things like that."

"..."

Although the women had kept their voices very low, they still reached Qiu Dayong's ears.

Of course, he himself also saw that Qiu Yan's life was getting better and better.

This fact infuriated him.

Their family was so poor they couldn't even afford to eat. Any money they had went to the fourth son, and now they barely survived on wild vegetable porridge every day. Meanwhile, Qiu Yan and the other two were eating meat!

Qiu Yan didn't hear the discussions on the oxcart, but she did see the jealous look in Qiu Dayong's eyes.

When it comes to being petty, Qiu Dayong is no less so than a woman.

He's already jealous of this little thing? This is nothing.

...

After returning home, Qiu Yan prepared to stew a carp and steam some rice.

When Ye saw Qiu Yan killing fish by the river, she couldn't help but grumble, "Qiu Yan, when it comes to living, you have to take it slow and steady." She ate wild rabbit yesterday and fish today. Qiu Yan really doesn't know how to manage a household.

She had overheard some of the gossip about Qiu Yan circulating among the villagers and couldn't help but think of some things for Qiu Yan.

Back when Ye first came to Lingnan Village, she suffered because she didn't know how to manage a household, and her family often went hungry.

Qiu Yan replied with a smile, "I know, Auntie."

After cleaning the fish, Qiu Yan first chopped it into pieces, then chopped scallions and garlic before starting to fry and stew the fish.

Smelling the fragrant aroma filling the courtyard, Qiu Ling'er swallowed hard. "Sister's stewed fish smells so good!"

Smelling the lingering smell of meat, Yang and Qian stormed into the Qiu family's old courtyard...

As soon as Qiu Dayong returned home, he told his family about Qiu Yan's fortune. Madam Yang, seething with anger, pounded her chest in fury. "You, eldest son! How dare you secretly leave money for Qiu Yan and her siblings! You don't respect your mother at all!"

Madam Qian began to fan the flames in her ear, "Mother, your eldest brother is your son, so you should have a share of this money too."

So, Yang, unable to contain her anger, came to their door.

This is the first time the Yang family has visited since we moved.

It wasn't that she didn't come before, but that her back had just recovered.

Qiu Yan and the other two were washing the leftover dishes in the courtyard when they saw Yang Shi and Qian Shi coming. Qiu Ling'er quickly slipped into the east room.

Yang looked at the remaining fish bones on the ground and the leftover rice in the bowl, smacked her lips twice,

"Oh, you're eating fish now, and rice too. This food must be worth a lot of money. Qiu Yan, tell us the truth, did your father leave money for the three of you behind my back?" She spoke with a smile that concealed a knife, yet remained relatively gentle.

Ever since Qiu Yan encountered Qiu Dayong's oxcart on her way home, she had suspected that something like this would happen to the Qiu family, but she never expected it to happen so quickly.

She stood up. "Yes, my father served the country and received a military salary. He left behind a lot of money, enough for us to live comfortably for the rest of our lives."

Yang stared at the bowls and chopsticks on the ground, then slapped her thigh. She didn't even have rice to eat, let alone fish.

She was so angry with her boss.

She quickly went from anger to joy.

Surprisingly, it was true. This eldest son had even left a way out for his three children. "You brat, you left money but don't even know how to give it to your grandma!"

Qiu Yan's expression remained unchanged. "Most of the money my father left behind is with my second uncle. If you want it back, you'll have to go to the county government and apologize first!"

How much of what Qiu Yan said was true or false? Mrs. Yang was somewhat unsure.

In the past, Qiu Yanke would never have dared to lie, but now she has been traumatized and her personality has changed drastically. Perhaps she is trying to shift the blame onto the second son in order to avoid sharing the money.

Madam Yang stomped her foot forcefully. "Hmph, I don't believe it! Qiu Yan, the three of you have been separated, but the eldest brother hasn't. His money naturally belongs to us half!"
