Chapter 9 Selling Eggs

Qiu Yan didn't even look up, and continued walking with her two younger siblings in her arms.

The couple's scheming nature was written all over their faces; they still thought she was a fool.

"Why did you leave?" Madam Qian got off the oxcart and chased after her for a few steps, trying to pick up Qiu Ling'er.

The little girl glanced timidly at Madam Qian and quickly moved away from her.

Qian, with her hands empty, coughed awkwardly twice and returned to the oxcart. "Sigh, this girl is holding a grudge against us."

Although the people on the oxcart had a bad impression of Yang, they were extremely kind to Qian.

Qian was sweet-talking and eloquent, and she was very good at praising people. No one in the village disliked her.

As if by accident, Madam Qian wiped away a non-existent tear, "Alas, poor child, how can anyone live in this old house?"

Qiu Laosan paused in his whip-cracking motion. What a dramatic wife of his.

Seeing her dejected state, the woman beside her offered a few words of comfort. "Da Yong's wife, let it go. After what happened in your family yesterday, Qiu Yan has already distanced herself from you. Try to think more positively, and from now on, you should each go your own way. In time, Qiu Yan will surely understand your kindness."

In this backward village, even going out is a hassle.

Just as Qiu Yan finished complaining in her mind, she heard another series of clattering hooves.

The three of them turned around and saw the Ye couple driving a donkey cart toward them.

Ye spoke first, "Qiu Yan, is it really you? Where are you headed? To the county town to find your aunt?"

Qiu Yan casually called out "Uncle Li" and replied, "Auntie, we're planning to go to the county town to sell eggs. Are you going to the county town too?"

Qiu Xu and Qiu Ling'er, just like their older sister, greeted people politely.

Ye glanced at Qiu Yan's bundle and nodded, saying, "Your Uncle Li has been coughing and wheezing quite badly lately. I'll take him to the county town to get a checkup. Come on up, I'll give you a ride."

Li Zheng coughed lightly, covering his mouth, and stopped the donkey cart. He kept a straight face, only nodding slightly to the three of them without saying a word.

After transmigrating, Qiu Yan saw her neighbor uncle for the first time.

In my memory, Li Zheng was a quiet and reserved person who didn't like to talk much, and the villagers were somewhat afraid of him.

In Qiu Yan's memory, their Lingnan Village was originally located in a border area. Later, war broke out, and some villagers fled to Shangjin, while others went to the mountains.

The war lasted for three years, and finally ended in victory for Qiu Yan's country, Dongjin, which expanded its territory.

After the war ended, the Li family moved to this village. I heard that when they arrived, they were still wearing handcuffs and shackles.

Later, Li Zheng was assigned to repair roads, and many of the surrounding city walls and land were repaired by him.

He did this for five years.

His usual mode of transportation was this donkey cart.

This donkey has been with him for five years.

Last year, the new emperor ascended the throne and granted a general amnesty, thus making Li Zheng a free man.

When the Li couple arrived, they only brought their daughter, whose name was Li Wenshu.

Li Wenshu has a cold and aloof personality and rarely chats with outsiders.

Three or four years ago, I heard that she got married. The original owner of this body didn't like to go out, and I never saw her again after that.

As Qiu Yan recalled the Li family's deeds, she couldn't help but glance at Li Zheng a few more times.

Uncle Li has a resolute appearance and an inherent sense of authority, but the passage of time has deepened the wrinkles on his face.

Having a donkey cart to ride in is certainly a good thing.

Qiu Yan and her two companions hitched a ride with the Li couple, which greatly increased their speed.

Donkeys run much faster than oxcarts, and they quickly overtook Qiu Dayong's oxcart ahead.

Qiu Dayong looked pale. He had originally planned to wait until he had seen off this group of people before waiting for Qiu Yan at the entrance of the county town.

He swung his long whip forcefully, trying to make the oxcart go faster.

However, oxen are slower than donkeys, so how could they catch up with a donkey cart?

Qiu Dayong was truly furious, and he even came to hate Li Zheng as well.

However, he was self-aware enough not to offend Li Zheng easily.

More than half an hour later, the county town was in sight.

Qiu Yan estimated in her mind that Lingnan Village was about ten kilometers away from the county seat.

The towering city gate bears the three large characters "Baiyang County" in a square shape, and a few scattered soldiers are guarding the gate.

Within the county town, people came and went in an endless stream.

Looking at this ancient city, Qiu Yan was filled with curiosity.

It was Qiu Xu and Qiu Ling'er's first time in the county town, so they were inevitably a little reserved. Once they entered the county town, they felt like there weren't enough eyes to take it all in.

The Li couple took Qiu Yan and the other two to the market and then went to the clinic.

Before leaving, Madam Ye reminded Qiu Yan, "We'll meet here again around 9:00 AM and go home together."

Having a good neighbor is really great. Qiu Yan thanked Ye Shi and went to find a place to set up her stall.

After getting off the donkey cart, Qiu Ling'er skipped around like a bird just released from its cage, "Sister, the county town is so big and lively, I love it here." She wished they could live in the county town too.

Qiu Xu followed closely behind his younger sister, afraid that she might get lost. "Ling'er, slow down, be careful not to fall."

Qiu Yan stared intently at the two small figures in front of her. This was how Ling'er should be at this age.

Arriving at the street, Qiu Yan found a place with a good location.

Soon, she started selling wild eggs at a stall, thus beginning her first experience in business.

Even if you've never eaten pork, you've still seen a pig run, haven't you?

Fifteen minutes later, the area was filled with stalls. Since the Qian family and others arrived late, they had to set up their stalls in more remote locations.

Looking from afar, Qian realized that Qiu Yan had come to the county town to sell wild eggs.

She thought Qiu Yan was going to give the eggs to Qiu Yumei in order to borrow some copper coins from her.

Qiu Yumei is the aunt of Qiu Yan and her two siblings.

Qiu Yan glanced around and saw some people holding poultry, some displaying vegetables, and some arranging sweet potatoes... Great, there were no competitors selling eggs today.

She placed the eggs on her bundle and kept an eye on passersby.

Fifteen minutes later, the eggs remained untouched.

Qiu Xu and Qiu Ling'er were getting anxious. What if the eggs couldn't be sold and Qian Shi snatched them away?

When their second uncle bought them things, they would only dare to hide them and eat them secretly. If Qian Shi found out, she would definitely take them away.

But with Qiu Yan around, their worries were unnecessary.

Just then, a woman carrying a basket walked past her, and Qiu Yan called out to her:

"Auntie, would you like some eggs? They're all fresh."

The first woman walked away without even looking up; it was the first time she had ever seen a beggar selling eggs on the street, and it was truly a rare sight.

Qiu Yan looked at the second woman: "Auntie, wild eggs from the mountains, come and take a look..."

The second woman glanced casually at the wild eggs on the ground, and left without saying a word.

Qiu Xu felt a pang of sadness as he watched his sister being rejected by the woman.

Little Ling'er didn't have so many thoughts on this. She just sat on the ground and looked enviously at the little girls of the same age as her in the street. Their hair ornaments and clothes were so beautiful.

"Auntie, come and take a look. Wild eggs are very nutritious and are best for women and children..." Qiu Yan, who is decisive and ruthless, is a complete novice when it comes to doing business, but she is now a poor farm girl, and she will never be discouraged in order to make a living.
