Qiu Yan felt puzzled. She withdrew her wrist, thinking that this woman must be asking her to help her family.
Ling Ba stood in front of Qiu Yan:
"Sorry, there's nothing we can do about it."
The woman was helpless, tears streaming down her face.
She knelt down before the four men, her face full of pleading.
Waaah...
The crying started again, and Qiu Yan felt a chill run down her spine. Although she didn't want to stay for a moment longer, she decided to see what difficulties the woman was facing, given the woman's pleading.
She helped the woman up from the ground with both hands, saying, "Let's go."
The woman's face showed excitement.
She pulled Qiu Yan along and started walking. Qin Susu's hair stood on end. "Where are you taking us?"
The woman turned around, nodded apologetically to Qiu Yan and the other three, and continued on her way.
Qiu Yan and the woman walked side by side, while Ling Qi and Ling Ba followed quietly.
Qin Susu, on the other hand, was left behind.
It was a bit eerie here, and she didn't want to follow.
The woman stopped in one of the sleeping quarters.
She opened the door to the bedchamber, where a middle-aged man, also in his forties, lay inside.
The man, though thin and bony to the point of being unbearable to look at, did not appear to be an ordinary man.
Qiu Yan had no interest in guessing their identities; it was none of her business.
"Who are you? Wenniang, why did you bring strangers here?"
The man looked wary when he saw Qiu Yan and her group.
"Don't be afraid, we're just passing by." To avoid causing the man to panic, Qiu Yan's voice was calm and her attitude gentle.
The woman glanced at the man with concern, then gestured at Qiu Yan.
Qiu Yan didn't quite understand, but she knew the woman's intention.
The man shook his head at the woman: "Forget it, life and death are predestined. Let's live one day at a time."
The woman knelt before Qiu Yan and the others once again, her face still pleading.
Qiu Yan helped her up and walked towards the man. After a quick glance, she said:
"A cold!"
"I know." The man coughed lightly twice, covering his mouth.
"My illness hasn't gotten better in over half a month." Without money for treatment, even a common cold can be fatal.
Qiu Yan didn't linger and left. Before leaving, she gave the woman a simple prescription.
They also gave the woman two strings of copper coins.
"Take this and buy some herbs; it will help you get better."
Saving a life is more meritorious than building a seven-story pagoda; she believed that with her prescription, this man would not die from his illness.
But whether she would starve to death, she didn't know.
She herself is currently in a situation where she doesn't know where her next meal will come from.
The number of poor people in Western Qin exceeded her expectations.
Leaving the gloomy palace, their next problem was accommodation.
After observing the shops along the street, the group finally chose an inn in a small alley to rest for the time being.
After settling into her accommodations, Qiu Yan went out again.
Looking at the half-moon in the sky, Qin Susu truly admired Qiu Yan's energy.
If she weren't afraid to sleep alone in an inn, she definitely wouldn't have followed along.
"Xiaoyan, aren't you tired after walking all day?"
"Susu, if you're tired, go back to the inn to rest." Qiu Yan's mind was full of ideas for ways to make money.
"Xiaoyan, if you want to make money, you'll have to wait until tomorrow," Ling Qi said from behind.
Only Ling Ba followed silently.
Qiu Yan knew that everyone was tired, and of course she wanted to rest too.
But today, they still have a place to rest; who knows, tomorrow they might have to sleep on the streets.
The accommodation is passable, but what about the food?
Without enough to eat, how can one have the strength to continue the journey?
