Chapter 35 I Want to Join the Army with You

Liu Ruonan took out the two hundred yuan from her pocket and handed it to Zhuang Sheng.

"Grandpa called me over and gave me 200 yuan."

"This is probably all the old man's belongings." Zhuang Sheng lowered his head in shame. He naturally understood that if he borrowed money under such circumstances, he would always suffer a blow.

Her husband is paralyzed and it's uncertain whether he will ever recover. If he never recovers, Liu Ruonan is afraid that she will never be able to pay back the money. It's understandable that no one is willing to lend her money.

"It's okay, Brother Zhuangsheng. When you get better and make money, we'll pay Grandpa back with interest." At this point, an idea suddenly struck him, and he said to Zhuangsheng, "Brother Zhuangsheng, I can sell ointments!"

Liu Ruonan stood up and went to the cupboard to find a few plasters that she had already made. These plasters she made were generally used to promote blood circulation, relieve pain and reduce swelling, and there was no doubt that someone could use them.

In the future, she will go up the mountain to collect more Chinese medicines and develop more for various diseases.

"By the way, Brother Zhuang Sheng, I see that grandma's legs are still hurting from the cold. I'll go make some plasters to dispel the cold and relieve the pain and send them to grandma this afternoon." Liu Ruonan said it in a hurry and did it immediately without even giving Zhuang Sheng a chance to react.

Once inside the yard, they set up a stove and started a fire. Plasters need to be slowly boiled, and it won't be ready in just one or two minutes.

Zhuang Sheng peered through the window at Liu Ruonan's frail figure, squatting before the stove, working diligently. His nose ached, tears welling in his eyes.

How could this girl, whom he had wanted to protect for a long time, end up having to endure such hardships?

Chen Lei was originally talking to Chen Jianmin in the room, but when they smelled the aroma of medicine, they both left.

Although Chen Lei looks silly, he is quite perceptive. Seeing Liu Ruonan busying around, he quickly stepped forward to help add fuel to the fire.

"Brother, you go and rest! I can handle it alone." Liu Ruonan smiled.

"I have nothing to do anyway." Chen Lei said, and began to add fire to the stove.

"Ruonan, didn't you just make a lot of plasters yesterday? Why are you making them again today?" Chen Jianmin poured a glass of water and handed it to Liu Ruonan. It was summer, and they were busy working by the stove.

"This is made for grandma." Liu Ruonan responded while stirring the ointment in the pot.

Chen Jianmin felt touched. He didn't expect that Liu Ruonan was such a thoughtful girl.

"Your grandma has had this illness for years, and I'm afraid it's difficult to cure." Chen Jianmin was a little disappointed. Earlier, the younger generation had been urging the old lady to see a doctor, but she was worried about the cost of the money and had been reluctant to spend it. When the pain became unbearable, she would go to the village clinic to get some painkillers. Over time, the illness seemed to be getting worse.

Liu Ruonan looked up, looked at Chen Jianmin and smiled, but said nothing.

Why? Chen Jianmin always saw a sense of confidence in Liu Ruonan's eyes. This made Chen Jianmin feel at ease. If his mother's illness was cured because of Liu Ruonan, it would be a happy event.

It was already afternoon when Liu Ruonan finished making the plaster. She made the plaster, hung it up to dry, and then prepared to cook.

Since Chen Jianmin was at home, he didn't let Liu Ruonan interfere, which gave Liu Ruonan the opportunity to talk to Zhuang Sheng.

Zhuang Sheng gently took Liu Ruonan's hand and looked at her with tenderness and gratitude in his eyes.

"Thank you for thinking of my grandma."

"What are you talking about? Isn't that my grandma too?" Liu Ruonan laughed carelessly.

Zhuang Sheng was in a very low mood, and was always full of inferiority in his bones. Liu Ruonan didn't want Zhuang Sheng to become like this, so she kept trying to comfort him.

Zhuang Sheng could naturally understand Liu Ruonan's good intentions. He gently hugged Liu Ruonan in his arms, and for a moment he didn't know what to say.

"Brother Zhuang Sheng, when you are better and return to the army, I want to join you." Liu Ruonan raised her head and looked at Zhuang Sheng seriously and said.

"Okay!" Zhuang Sheng hadn't expected Liu Ruonan to bring up this matter on her own initiative. If one day he returned to the army, he would be delighted to have Liu Ruonan by his side.

Liu Ruonan wanted to stay away from the troubles here and never see these disgusting faces again in her life.

"Ruonan, it's time for dinner!" Liu Ruonan was about to say something, but she heard Chen Jianmin's voice coming from outside.

Chen Lei also stayed to have dinner together. After the meal, Liu Ruonan planned to go and deliver the plaster to her grandmother.

Summer nights come especially late. In the afternoon, the sky started to get cloudy, and it seemed like a downpour was about to come.

Chen Lei originally had nothing to do, so at Zhuang Sheng's instruction, he accompanied Liu Ruonan to her grandmother's house.

Grandma and grandpa were having dinner at the time. When they saw Liu Ruonan and Chen Lei coming, they quickly asked them to sit down and added more bowls and chopsticks.

"Grandpa, don't bother. We have already eaten." Chen Lei pulled Chen Wanglong to sit down, took his bowl and chopsticks, and let him continue eating.

"Why did you come here with Ruonan?" Chen Wanglong asked Chen Lei.

"I had dinner at my aunt's house. Ruonan said she was coming to bring some plaster to grandma. Zhuang was afraid of running into Xiangdong and Liu Ergou, so he asked me to come with her."

Seeing Chen Lei caring about Zhuang Sheng like this, Chen Wanglong felt very relieved. Although his sons did not get along with him, fortunately, his grandchildren got along well.

"Well! Zhuang Sheng can't move now. You are the eldest brother, so you have to worry more about him." Chen Wanglong said while eating.

"I know, Grandpa." Chen Lei responded.

"By the way, why are you here at this time?" Chen Wanglong looked at Liu Ruonan and asked in confusion. He was worried, maybe Zhuang Sheng didn't want to use their money and asked Liu Ruonan to send it back?

"My sister-in-law made a plaster for grandma's leg pain and wanted to apply it to her." Before Liu Ruonan could even speak, Chen Lei couldn't wait to explain. His eyes were filled with admiration for Liu Ruonan.

Previously, his impression of Liu Ruonan was based on what his elders had told him—a hardworking child with a difficult life. Unexpectedly, Liu Ruonan was quite capable. Chen Lei had little experience, but he felt that a girl who could identify medicine and treat illnesses was truly remarkable.

Tian Ni was quite curious and looked at Liu Ruonan in surprise: "Oh? You can also make plasters?"

"Grandma, my sister-in-law is so amazing! You don't know that thanks to her treatment, Zhuang Shusheng has been able to sit longer these days." Chen Lei interrupted Liu Ruonan again.

Tian Ni felt somewhat helpless towards her grandson. But after hearing what he said, it seemed that Zhuang Sheng's condition had improved slightly. She thought to herself that it was time to take some time to visit Zhuang Sheng.

As they spoke, the two elders had already finished their meal. Chen Wanglong had always cleaned up the mess, but this time, Liu Ruonan rushed to do it. The two elders looked at Liu Ruonan, feeling very relieved. Under such circumstances, Zhuang Sheng was fortunate to have married such a sensible, hardworking, and capable wife.
