Chapter 36 Marriage

Yan Xia felt a little sorry for the girl. She hugged Shi Xiaohe and gently patted her back.

It's like putting a child to sleep.

Shi Xiaohe cried her heart out.

She was so heartbroken; after her parents passed away, she was truly exhausted and suffering.

But for her grandfather's sake, she had to persevere. She worked in the fields during the day and embroidered handkerchiefs at night. Worried that her hands would become rough, she soaked them in chili peppers and boiling water every day, and then used a stone to rub off the dead skin.

The purpose was to avoid making the handkerchief rough.

Her hands look smooth and flat, but they are actually riddled with holes inside.

Just like her heart.

No one knows how scared she has been these past few days. She's afraid of what she'll do if her grandfather passes away, and she's afraid of being humiliated by a family she doesn't know after marrying them.

Fortunately, she met Aunt Yan.

Such a wonderful aunt actually agreed to marry her.

Shi Xiaohe was really happy.

"mother--"

She finally uttered the words.

"Mother is here, child, don't be afraid, Mother is always here."

Yan Xia patted Shi Xiaohe's head.

Shi Xiaohe cried until she soaked Yan Xia's clothes.

When I got home.

It was already dark when Yan Xia took off her coat and threw it into the basin.

The family of five began preparing for tomorrow's wedding banquet, since they didn't know many people in the village.

Yan Xia planned to only have two tables. She had just asked Xiao He, and she had no relatives there, so no one would be attending. Yan Xia didn't plan to invite many people either, just Brother Qian's family, Grandma Wang and her grandson, the village head's family, Zhao Dali's family, and Matchmaker Xu's family.

Toddlers are not allowed to sit at the table; instead, a small low table is set up next to the large table for them to sit at.

This time, she not only bought groceries, but also a bottle of ancient Chinese liquor.

The price was outrageously high, but for Jin Fu's sake, Yan Xia reluctantly paid the money.

How can a wedding not involve drinking the nuptial wine? Besides, the guests should drink too. She could tell when the village head came to eat last time that he was craving wine.

Finally, the menu was decided on four cold dishes, two soups, eight stir-fried dishes, and a serving of fruit after the meal.

By the time Jin Fu and Jin Lu borrowed the table and benches from Sister Zhao's family, it was already quite late.

Yan Xia was about to call the children to wash up and go to bed.

"Knock knock knock—"

"Open the door, Mother! Open the door—"

Chen Jinshou pounded on the door loudly.

He screamed.

Yan Xia was startled.

When the door was opened, Chen Jinshou's face was covered in tears.

"Mother, I was wrong. I shouldn't have left with you. Mother, please let me come back. I want to live with you. Mother, please don't let my eldest brother marry Xiaohe. I love her, I love her so much! Mother, please give Xiaohe to me. Can't my eldest brother just marry any girl? Why does he have to marry Xiaohe? Why! Mother, I want to come back. Please let me come back, Mother—"

Chen Jinshou knelt on the ground, tightly hugging Yan Xia's legs and crying uncontrollably.

Everyone in the room frowned.

“You’re too late. Xiaohe has already agreed to marry your older brother, and everyone in the village knows. You want me to back out and marry you instead? Have you thought about what will happen to Xiaohe’s reputation? What about your older brother? Where do you put them? Besides, since she agreed, it means she doesn’t like you. From the day I left the Chen family, you were no longer my son. What’s this talk of coming back? Remember, you are now Chen Shouguo’s son.”

Yan Xia pried Chen Jinshou's hands off.

She really looked down on people like that.

He didn't want to live in the dilapidated temple with her at first, and chose to stay in the Chen family to live the so-called good life. However, when he saw that she had moved into a new house, he ran back to apologize.

Does he have to forgive me just because he apologizes?

To be honest, he is not good enough for Shi Xiaohe, and Yan Xia would never marry Shi Xiaohe to him.

No matter how much Chen Jinshou cried, Yan Xia didn't soften her heart at all; the child wasn't hers to begin with.

If it weren't for the original owner of this body, the four children's good manners and obedience, and the goodwill she felt towards them, she would have simply packed her bags and wandered the world.

He's an ingrate, someone even his own mother wouldn't want. Bringing him home is like inviting a wolf into the house.

"Jin Fu, Jin Lu, drag him out and close the door!"

Yan Xia shouted loudly.

The two sons then came to their senses.

"Fifth brother, let's go."

Jin Fu didn't make a move; he wanted Chen Jinshou to leave on his own.

"Why should I leave? I'm staying for your sake! You're all a bunch of good-for-nothings, bullied by the Chen family and not daring to utter a sound. Father's pension was a full thirty taels, and we didn't get a single copper coin. I stayed with the Chen family for that money, and it's mine! Grandma said she would help me marry Xiaohe, so why are you trying to take Xiaohe from me?"

Chen Jinshou's eyes were bloodshot, and he stared intently at Chen Jinfu as if possessed.

"What are you standing there for? Aren't you going to listen to me?"

Yan Xia felt that this kid seemed to have gone a bit crazy; she was afraid he might be planning to kill someone.

He quickly had his two sons push him out.

Until the gate was locked.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Jin Fu, don't overthink it. He's not your brother anymore. If he changes his ways and you're doing well in life, it's your business if you want to help him out. Forget about him now. Have a good wedding tomorrow. Remember, Shi Xiaohe doesn't like him. Don't do anything foolish like giving up your wife for the sake of so-called brotherhood!"

Yan Xia gave her eldest son a warning.

"Mom, I won't. I'm not as stupid as you think."

Jin Fu felt a chill run down his spine from Jin Shou's gaze. This was no longer his younger brother; he was his mother's son, not his father's.

The two had no further contact after that.

After receiving the reply, Yan Xia felt relieved. The family quickly washed up and went back to their respective rooms to sleep.

Jin Fu, however, remained awake for a long time.
