Chapter 14 Entering the City, Changing Household Registration

Lin Ze, carrying the little one, beckoned them to walk under the big banyan tree.

There was an oxcart parked next to Lin's father, and several other people carrying loads like him were standing nearby.

When Lin Jiujiu came over, several people gave her a disdainful look and then turned away.

Ignoring everyone else, Lin's father looked Lin Jiujiu up and down before asking a question.

"Jiujiu, are you alright? Is anything bothering you?"

It was too late yesterday, so Lin Jiujiu only briefly mentioned that she had been drugged and almost assaulted by Xiao Changhe.

As a father, Lin's father didn't ask too many questions, as he didn't know if the medicine would have any effect on Lin Jiujiu.

I saw her leave early in the morning again, and I thought she was feeling unwell.

Lin Jiujiu shook her head and said, "I'm fine, Dad. What are you and my older brother doing?"

Lin Jiujiu glanced at the man in front of her, who was about the same height as her, and the load on his back was almost crushing his waist.

“In the next town, there’s a wealthy man with seven or eight hundred acres of land. It’s spring planting season, and he’s too busy to manage, so he needs to hire some people to help. He’ll pay thirty coins a day and provide lunch. Your older brother and I will go see if we can be selected.”

Xiao Sanzi caught quite a few fish last night. I'll have your older brother take them to town to exchange for some money to help with household expenses.

Lin Jiujiu thought about Lin Luo splashing around in the water on such a cold day and couldn't help but purse her lips.

"Dad, don't let Lin Luo go to the river late at night anymore. It's too dangerous. Besides, he works so hard to earn a few copper coins, and who knows who he'll give them to?"

If something really happens, the only ones who will regret it are you, my mother, and our whole family.

Those who received the copper coins might not necessarily be upset.

Lin's father knew perfectly well that she was making the right point.

But those people are his parents, what can he do?

Even so, Lin's father still took her words to heart.

"When Jiu Jiu's father finds out, he'll give that kid a good beating when he gets back, and he won't let him go into the water again."

Just then, a head suddenly popped out from behind the tree and said to Lin's father with a dissatisfied look.

“爹,我知道你疼二姐,但也不能为了让她高兴就揍我啊,我这不是想着,摸些鱼虾回来也能给我姐送点补身子吗?”

As Lin Luo was speaking, he saw his father glare at him. He quickly shrank back and tried to hide behind a tree, but Lin Jiujiu was one step ahead and grabbed him by the collar and pulled him out.

He said with a serious expression, "I don't need you to do these things for me."

Seeing the hurt look on Lin Luo's face when she heard her words, she thought for a moment and softened her tone.

“I can take care of myself. You are my brother. I just hope you are safe and sound. If anything happens to you, I will live with guilt for the rest of my life, you know that?”

Having traversed so many lifetimes, Lin Jiujiu had long since grown from a passionate young woman into a cold and indifferent one, but this family rekindled a spark of warmth in her heart.

She genuinely didn't want anything to happen to Lin Luo.

Lin Luo nodded in agreement when she heard this.

"Second sister, I understand."

Lin Jiujiu could tell from his constantly shifting eyes that he knew, but he would never change.

Lin Jiujiu sighed and finally said.

"You're free this morning, right? Come with me to the county town."

She felt it was necessary to show off her abilities in front of her foolish younger brother.

Let him know that making money is just a matter of minutes for him.

To prevent her foolish younger brother from presumptuously trying to help her and doing something dangerous.

When Lin's father heard that Lin Jiujiu was going to take Lin Luo to the county town, he was naturally delighted.

He had originally intended for Lin Ze not to come with him today, as he was really worried about leaving Lin Jiujiu alone with the child.

Now that she herself has suggested that Xiao Sanzi accompany her, that would be the best outcome.

Although this kid is a bit mischievous and not very old, at least he knows how to protect his sister.

Seeing that Lin Luo hadn't said a word for a long time, Lin's father couldn't help but kick him in the butt.

"What are you standing there for? Go pick up Xiaobao and go with your sister to the county town. Protect them, mother and son, and don't let anyone bully them, understand?"

Lin Luo wasn't unwilling; he was just so happy he was almost dumbfounded. He had never been to a county town before, not even once in his entire life.

Lin Ze then handed Xiao Tianjue to him and patted him on the shoulder.

Everything is understood without words.

Meanwhile, the donkey cart waiting over there started urging people to hurry up.

"Lin Laowu, are you and your son still going to work? If you don't get on the bus soon, we won't wait for you."

Upon hearing this, Lin's father quickly replied, "Coming, coming, coming right away."

As he spoke, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a few copper coins, and stuffed them into Lin Jiujiu's hand, giving her careful instructions.

"It's not close to the county town from here. When you get to the town, find a car to take you there. Don't be silly and walk. Your mother will be worried if you get tired."

Lin Jiujiu looked at the few copper coins in her hand and knew that this was probably her father's only private savings. She wanted to return them, but her father did not give her a chance to refuse. He had already called Lin Ze to jog onto the donkey cart.

Lin Jiujiu glanced at the oxcart that had already gone far away, then at her two younger brothers beside her, one of whom was still carrying a load on his back. In the end, she could only helplessly accept the copper coins.

She couldn't help but wonder if her father had a bad memory and forgot that she had just extorted ten taels of silver from that old bastard Xiao Chengcai yesterday. It couldn't be that he couldn't even afford a carriage ride.

But she also knew that what she held in her hand was not just money, but also her father's deep love for his daughter.

Lin Jiujiu called to her two younger brothers to follow, and then headed towards the town.
