Chapter 447: Admit Defeat
Bian Haifang was speechless and could only pout unwillingly and sit aside.
Ke Wenpei glanced at everyone, sighed helplessly, and then went out.
After leaving the ward, he walked aimlessly on the street full of rubble and glass, not knowing what to do next.
It was not until his stomach started to growl that he realized that the people in the ward probably hadn't eaten yet.
But now, he has nowhere to buy it.
The restaurants in the hospital basically only serve medical staff, and most of the restaurants outside are also closed.
The few that remained standing also temporarily closed down after the earthquake.
Helplessly, Ke Wenpei could only go to those large supermarkets to buy rice and noodles.
However, after walking along and turning several streets, he found that all the supermarkets were closed.
There was no way. Before confirming that the earthquake was over and the building was safe, the supermarket manager did not dare to call the staff back to work, in case something happened.
Ke Wenpei could only return home as if he had lost his parents, and then ask his neighbors for a loan.
The news of the Ke family being robbed spread amid Bian Haifang's crying and the farce of Ke's mother fainting and being sent to the hospital.
So, without him explaining much, someone gave him some food from their home for emergency use.
But, it’s not much, just enough for one or two meals at most.
But even this satisfied him. After all, this was a friendship that came in time of need.
Ke Wenpei went to several houses and borrowed enough food to last a week, and then he prepared to cook for his family.
However, the lack of gas and electricity once again put him in a difficult position. He had no choice but to knock on the neighbor's door again.
Because the neighbors heard about the Ke family's situation and were worried about being robbed, they left someone behind the next day and moved back home. However, they were fully armed and ready to flee at any time in the event of an aftershock.
Seeing Ke Wenpei explaining his purpose with an embarrassed look on his face, the neighbor could only look at him and sigh helplessly, then turned around and took out an alcohol stove from the kitchen and asked him to use it for emergency purposes.
What I was thinking was, "I don't know what's going on with the Ke family. Have we entered the end of the world? Something unexpected could happen at any minute, and here we are, and we're not prepared for anything!"
Normally, after experiencing extreme cold weather, everyone would have prepared a coal stove for their home. But looking at Ke Wenpei, I'm afraid he would just stay at home and endure the extreme cold.
What he didn't know was that the Ke family originally had a stove, otherwise how could they go out to sell braised food in the winter.
However, after the business was closed, Bian Haifang's brothers from her mother's side came to his house and "borrowed" the coal stove.
So Ke Wenpei took the alcohol stove back home.
Because his neighbor only gave him a small piece of solid alcohol, he didn't dare to mess around with it. He could only knead the flour in advance, make it into noodles, and then cook it in a pot.
As for the vegetables, the potted greens at home were not stolen, so he picked a handful, washed them, and threw them into the pot.
Add some soy sauce, vinegar and some salt, and lunch is ready.
He took a bite first, and then ate like crazy. He must have been starving, so he thought such a simple lunch without oil or water was so delicious.
Then I cooked for my mother, wife, and children. It was still simple vegetable noodles, but this time there were a few eggs given by the neighbors.
When he finished cooking the noodles, he packed them into lunch boxes and sent them to the hospital. Because there was no transportation, the noodles were all clumped up when they got there.
Bian Haifang kept cursing and complaining, but he didn't slow down at all while eating the noodles.
The children pouted in disgust after receiving the lunch boxes, but the rumbling of their stomachs made them unable to refuse the bland soup in front of them.
With no other options, I could only make do with it.
"By the way, go to your brother's house later and get our coal stove back," said Ke Wenpei.
After hearing this, Bian Haifang immediately stood up and took a defensive stance, "What are you going to do? Didn't you agree to lend the stove to my brother?"
Ke Wenpei rolled his eyes and said, "Now there is no water, electricity or gas. Tell me, how are we going to cook?"
Bian Haifang obviously got the point that was different from what Ke Wenpei said. She excitedly grabbed his hand and asked, "We, we found our food?"
"How is that possible!"
Ke Wenpei wanted to shake off the hand that was about to break his bones, but he failed after trying several times.
He gave up and said unhappily, "There is no clue at all. How can we find the food? Besides, wouldn't the thief who stole the food have no idea and leave it at home for you to find? Who knows, he might have moved away and hidden in some corner."
Then he frowned and said, "Even if we are really unlucky and get caught, they can just lie and say that the food has been eaten up, and then offer to compensate us in cash. Anyway, under the control of the alliance, those things are really not worth much money."
Bian Haifang didn't hear the answer she wanted, and disappointedly shook off Ke Wenpei's arm, then said unwillingly: "But you can't buy food with money!"
"So what? This is the current situation. If they dare to steal, it means they have a plan for recovery. Maybe they have already planned it, and the earthquake just gave them a perfect opportunity."
After hearing this, Bian Haifang had no choice but to accept defeat even if she was unwilling.
Then he remembered what Ke Wenpei had said and asked, "Where did you get the food? Do you have a hidden stash of money?"
"No, I borrowed it from a neighbor. He said he would return it after the summer harvest." Ke Wenpei said, "Even the stove for cooking at noon was borrowed from someone. If you don't want to go hungry, go back to your brother's house and ask for a coal stove."
Bian Haifang was obviously unhappy. She said awkwardly, "Since I have borrowed it from my neighbor, I can just use it first. It would be so embarrassing for me to go home and ask my brother for it."
Ke Wenpei was not surprised at all by this statement.
Because this has happened many times over the years, his family fortune was almost emptied in this way, and his wife was completely unaware of it.
Ke Wenpei had no choice but to patiently explain: "We borrowed an alcohol stove from our neighbor. There was only a block of solid alcohol in it, and half of it was used up when I cooked noodles for you at noon today. I don't know if the rest can last until dinner is finished."
Bian Haifang realized the seriousness of the matter and nodded, "Okay, I'll go to my brother's house this afternoon."
Ke Wenpei hummed, then reminded: "By the way, borrow some food from your brothers. Our neighbors give one bowl per person, and the amount they give can only last through this week. If you can't borrow it, you and the children will have to go hungry starting next week."
As for his mother, he would find a way to save some food to bring back for her. As for his wife and children, they were not on the same page with him, so he should just forget about it.
But these words sounded like thunder to Bian Haifang. She refused without thinking, "How can that be possible? My brother's family doesn't have much food. If I borrow it, what will happen to my nephews and nieces?"
