Chapter 125 The Moon of Yesteryear

Chapter 125 The Moon of Yesteryear

As soon as Zhao Le entered the courtyard, he smelled a fragrance. "What are you doing? It smells so good!"

"It's Dragon Boat Festival today, but we couldn't buy any ingredients to make zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). Changning said she'd make some jujube cakes so Dr. Zhao can take some to the hospital later to share with our wounded," Xiao Yang said, poking her head out of the kitchen. Then she called into the house, "Dani! Come get the jujube cakes!"

As soon as she finished speaking, a dark-skinned and robust girl lifted the curtain. She had thick eyebrows and big eyes. When she smiled, she reminded people of the wild lilies that covered the mountains and fields of Yan Ankai. Ge Dani was stunned when she saw Zhao Le, but then she smiled and said, "Dr. Zhao, Sister Changning said you went to the countryside for free medical consultations. I thought you wouldn't be back for a while."

Seeing that Ge Dani's arm was wrapped in gauze, Zhao Le quickly stepped forward and took the tray from Xiao Yang's hand, scolding, "Your hand is still injured, why aren't you resting properly?"

"I only got hit on the left hand by the Japanese devils, but my right hand is fine. What's there to be afraid of? Besides, I'm very strong. I can just grab two jujube cakes..." Ge Dani muttered. She was in good health and had a good appetite. It's just that there wasn't much food in the army. The most common food was bitter. But because she led the girls to kill so many Japanese devils, even bitterness was sweet, sweeter than jujube cakes.

Da Ni, who had been craving sweet jujube cake, stopped craving it when Zhao Le arrived. She simply sat upright, chin slightly raised, and asked, "Dr. Zhao, guess what I am now?"

Xie Ning sat cross-legged on the kang (a heated brick bed), watching the two of them laugh.

"You've become the regimental commander?" Zhao Le asked, feigning surprise.

Upon hearing this, Da Ni deflated. "Dr. Zhao, why are you hitting me where it hurts? Being a battalion commander isn't that easy! I'm a platoon leader now! A platoon leader! And I'm on the independent women's volleyball team!"

"That's amazing!" Zhao Le praised sincerely.

Da Ni became happy again and began to tell Xie Ning the story she had just told her.

"...Last August and September, there was a major flood. I only found out later that Yanjing and Tianjin were flooded, with Tianjin being the most severely affected...At the time, I was returning to the Jin-Cha-Ji Military Region with my unit. The river we were on the way was normally a wading crossing, but because of the heavy rains, the river had swelled and became difficult to cross. Many soldiers were naked, holding their clothes, guns, and radios above their heads to cross the river. We female soldiers were no exception, except we weren't completely naked. And..."

Zhao Le then laughed, "Aren't you shy, Da Ni?"

"What's there to be shy about?" Da Ni snorted. "Most of the guys in our company are greenhorns, skinny as monkeys, not even as strong as my junior brother."

Despite the old lady's emphasis on gender distinctions, she had seen her fellow students practicing martial arts shirtless when she was young. In those marching situations, who cared about being shy?

"The Hebei Province was flooded, and it was reported in the newspapers. The situation was very serious. Initial estimates suggested there were about a million disaster victims, or even more. However, there was another report at the time."

Xie Ning recalled, "Traveling by boat in the mountains was truly a remarkable feat."

“I know that!” Da Ni’s eyes lit up. “Back then, the Japanese devils took advantage of the swollen river to learn how to drive assault boats in Baoding and launch a surprise attack on the First Division. Everyone was thinking that it was because the Japanese devils were retaliating for the time a few months ago when we beat them to a pulp in Longhua.”

During the assault, our company circled around to the Zhennan bunker, cut their barbed wire, and because it was the middle of the night, the Japanese soldiers were all fast asleep... We threw more than a dozen grenades at the bunker. Before, guerrillas would occasionally shoot at the Japanese, but they all assumed it was just the guerrillas and didn't take it seriously... Some Japanese soldiers were even climbing out of the windows in their underwear, and I shot one of them! We even captured a light machine gun!

"Goodness gracious, Sister Changning, Dr. Zhao, you wouldn't believe it! Those villagers were incredibly fierce! When they heard we were fighting the Japanese, they all grabbed shovels and sticks and came out to help. They killed several Japanese soldiers, including a little girl!"

Da Ni gave a thumbs up, "That little girl had no weapon, so she just dragged that fleeing Japanese soldier along, hitting him with any stones she could find, and literally smashed him to death!"

Don't let the little girl's appearance fool you; her eyes were filled with hatred. She fought the Japanese devils like she didn't care about her own life. Later, she found out that the Japanese devils had bullied her mother and killed her father and two brothers. She was then stuffed into a haystack to escape the tragedy.

The young girl has now successfully joined her women's volleyball team and is a glorious female warrior.
