Chapter 27 The Moon of Yesteryear
Xie Ning gave a soft "hmm." It was just a collaboration; she wasn't putting her back on someone's shoulders. However, Xie Ning hadn't expected that, apart from the woman she met that day, her marriage would be brought up by various parties.
She would either attend banquets where businessmen would introduce their daughters to her, or she would send matchmakers to her home to arrange marriages, which almost got Grandpa Zhang involved. Not only that, she also received love letters from many female students.
The contents described their subtle love and deep adoration, but Xie Ning put them all into a wooden box and ignored them.
What annoyed her most was the matchmaking efforts from her business partner. Polite refusal was useless, and given her status, a firm refusal would likely cause her trouble.
After all, it's easier to dodge a spear in the open than to guard against an arrow in the dark, and she didn't want to get involved in too much trouble.
But this also led to him being entangled with a female student at the school, who was also the daughter of a business tycoon. She often pestered Xie Ning at school, bringing him lunch boxes or other small trinkets from time to time, and seemed to be a pure and innocent young girl.
Xie Ning stared intently at the shy and timid girl in front of her. She was wearing the most common student uniform at the time, and her long hair was tied into two braids. However, from the watch on her wrist, the necklace around her neck, and the pearl earrings on her ears, one could guess that this female student came from a good family. Otherwise, she wouldn't have worn so many accessories, and she wouldn't wear the same one every day.
"Student Hu, if you have any questions, you can ask them during class. There is a dedicated time for answering questions in class. It's lunchtime now."
Occasionally, when Xie Ning was too lazy to go out, she would eat at the cafeteria. Although the food in the cafeteria wasn't very good, it wasn't inedible either, and it was enough to fill her stomach. This way, she could have an extra half hour of rest time.
Hu Youya seemed oblivious to Xie Ning's implied meaning, or perhaps she did but pretended not to understand, and simply said to herself, "Mr. Xie, may I sit here and eat? You promised my father a few days ago that you would take good care of me at school."
Xie Ning: ...She doesn't seem to remember.
The girl pouted as she spoke, her face full of innocent charm. Coupled with her beautiful face, it was hard not to be moved. Hu Youya was quite pleased with herself. There were quite a few boys in her class who liked her, and even some teachers had a good impression of her.
Before Xie Ning could say anything, she plopped down next to him. "Mr. Xie, this is a bento box I made myself. Please try it." She even picked up a piece of sushi from the bento box and gave it to Xie Ning.
Then she stole another glance at Xie Ning. The girl was cautious, her eyes filled with admiration. It has to be said that Xie Ning was very beautiful. Her skin was whiter than most people's. Her long eyelashes cast a shadow on her eyelids. The girl knew what kind of eyes were inside. Her light brown pupils were extremely gentle. Every time she was looked at by such eyes, she would have the illusion of falling into a vortex of deep affection.
Her gaze fell on Xie Ning's hand holding the chopsticks. Her fingers were long and slender with distinct knuckles. There were faint bluish-purple lines on the back of her hand, which ruined the cold jade-like beauty. Those were capillaries on the surface, as if they had been frozen. She felt that she should knit a pair of gloves for Xie Ning, otherwise her husband would get cold.
Hu Youya never expected that the person she was tasked with this mission would be so to her liking. He was refined and polite, and when he looked out the window, he was aloof and lonely, like the lonely moon in the sky, making people want to pull him down and defile him.
If Xie Ning cooperates, she will live a good life because Xie Ning has great value. She will probably become Xie Ning's wife. If Xie Ning is obedient, she will always be a gentle wife, not a sharp blade. Hu Youya thought to herself.
Xie Ning coldly put down her chopsticks; the feeling of being spied on was utterly disgusting.
"Xiao Yang, I'm going back to rest now." With that, Xie Ning picked up his briefcase containing lecture notes and left the cafeteria to return to his dormitory.
Xiao Yang scratched his head blankly, looked at Xie Ning who had only taken a bite or two of the food, and glanced at Hu Youya who was frozen in place. He sighed in his heart. This was the first time Mr. Xie had been so cold. Even the gentle smile that was usually on his lips had disappeared.
It's understandable, though. There are quite a few female students in the school who like Mr. Xie, but they are generally very polite. At most, they might secretly send him love letters, secretly look at him, or actively ask questions in the classroom or class. They wouldn't be as bold as this female student, who insisted on coming closer even after Mr. Xie had already told her to leave.
Not at all reserved. Mr. Xie probably prefers the more traditional, gentle, and reserved type of well-bred lady.
Xiao Yang's mind was racing with guesses. He ignored the embarrassed Hu Youya and instead packed Xie Ning's food to go, then carried it back to the dormitory, planning to make rice dumplings for Xie Ning later.
Pan-fry it in oil, then add some chili sauce chopped by Aunt Liu, and it will definitely be incredibly delicious.
Hu Youya was left standing there awkwardly, feeling extremely embarrassed by the strange looks around her. A hint of resentment flashed in her slightly lowered eyes. She had gone to such lengths, yet Xie Ning remained unmoved.
Whether it's her beauty or her family background, either one of them would be irresistible to men. What makes Xie Ning so special?
Xie Ning, who was being cursed, was leaning lazily on the bed, holding several calculation verification sheets in his hand. These were calculated by Ms. Lin Qin. Principal An and his wife were both open-minded people. Under the persuasion of the army commander, they not only did not refuse, but also showed great willingness. Principal An, in particular, exclaimed that he should have studied mathematics instead of history.
"Cough cough—"
Xiao Yang brought in fragrant rice balls and immediately noticed Xie Ning's unusually flushed face. Startled, he asked, "Mr. Xie? You have a fever?"
Xie Ning took a sip of hot water and nodded gently. Although she had been secretly taking care of her health, she was still weaker than the average person. She had caught a cold from just a bit of night wind.
"Go to the infirmary and get some fever reducers. I'll take them and lie down for a while and I'll feel better."
But there is definitely no more time to rest. She has been gradually reducing the number of times she repairs machinery in textile factories and other places, and has put her focus on allocating equipment in military factories.
It was quite late when they returned to the villa. Today, Xie Ning not only spoke for an extra hour, but also reached an agreement with several students who she thought were doing very well in their studies. These students could then follow her for practical learning.
That evening, Aunt Liu knocked on Xie Ning's door, placed the late-night snack and medicine on the bedside table, and then took out a note from her bosom, "Changning, Liu Ping sent someone to deliver this."
That was a list of several people, representing potential threats to Xie Ning's safety. The list included members of local gangs and the Blue Shirts Society.
