Chapter 68 The Moon of Yesteryear

Chapter 68 The Moon of Yesteryear

After seeing Fu Zisi and Xu Pingan off, Xie Ning finally had the time to open the package Xiao Yang had brought back from the city. The larger one was sent by Zhang Congzhi from the United States, and the smaller one was from Ms. Lin Qin.

Ms. Lin Qin was still discussing some math problems and wearing a Western-style dress, showing how much she liked it. Xie Ning shook her head and put it into her spatial storage. Although there were many merchants coming and going in this small town, she had never seen anyone wearing such a fashionable dress. She didn't want to stand out too much, so she usually wore plain-colored cheongsams.

Zhang Congzhi sent quite a lot this time, including most of the tools Xie Ning needed, as well as newly manufactured gun barrels from their weapons company.

After reading the two letters, Xie Ning opened the drawing paper. It depicted a funny Donald Duck. Mrs. Zhang said it was a character from an animated short film, which she liked very much, so she drew it to share with Xie Ning.

Disney?

Did it exist at that time?

Although he wasn't entirely sure, it seemed the animation was still in its early stages, so Xie Ning mentioned it in his reply: if Mrs. Zhang had any spare funds, she could try investing in the animation industry.

When Mrs. Zhang, who was far away on the other side of the ocean, received Xie Ning's letter, she was still overjoyed. It was not for any other reason than the words "Dear Ms. Chen Heyi" at the beginning of the letter. Every time Xie Ning replied, he would separate her from Zhang Congzhi, instead of just mentioning her a few words in his replies to Zhang Congzhi, like others.

Seeing Zhang Er's skirt fluttering, Zhang Congzhi quickly stepped forward to support her, saying, "Heyi, be careful, you're pregnant."

Turning around in high heels might scare him into having a heart attack. Zhang Congzhi has been very well-behaved since arriving in America. It's mainly because of Ruan Xue's matter. His grandfather beat him up, and his older brother beat him up again after arriving in America. If he doesn't behave, his legs will be broken.

"Alright, alright, why are you being so delicate? I even danced with two handsome men today!" Now, the Zhang brothers manage the weapons company, while she manages the textile factory. She has gained considerable experience. Even though she is often looked down upon when she goes out to do business, so what?

When others look down on you, it's often the beginning of their downfall. She doesn't hold back in business.

Zhang Congzhi's face darkened, but he dared not speak out against his anger.

Mrs. Zhang rolled her eyes at Zhang Congzhi and then started reading the letter. “Investment? Congzhi, Changning said this Donald Duck thing is worth investing in.”

"What Donald Duck?"

"It's that short film we watched before, the Little Hen animation."

“That thing is valuable?” Zhang Congzhi didn’t believe it.

"You don't trust Changning?" Mrs. Zhang asked sideways.

Believe, believe, believe! How can you not believe?

Zhang Congzhi stopped discussing the matter with his second wife and went upstairs to his study to read Xie Ning's reply. The rest of the reply was standard, but he didn't expect Xie Ning to focus on 'Black Blizzards,' which he had only mentioned once or twice in the letter.

Since May of this year, a series of massive black waves have swept across the western American plains, obscuring the sky and moving from west to east, covering two-thirds of the continent. Wherever the black storm passes, the sun disappears, and the clear blue sky is instantly filled with dust. Sand pours down from the sky like torrential rain. Even New York, where they are located, is not spared, with a thick haze covering the sky and visibility very low.

The Black Flood severely impacted American agriculture and livestock, causing volatility in the grain market and severely disrupting its economic development. This was a disaster, exacerbating the Great Depression. However, for the upper-class capitalists, it meant the emergence of more cheap labor...

Thump thump thump—

There was a knock on the study door, and Zhang Congzhi, who was engrossed in writing a proposal, realized that it was already evening. His stomach growled at just the right moment. As soon as he went downstairs, he saw Old Master Zhang stroking his beard, his face full of pride.

"Dad, where did you go today? I haven't seen you all day, and you seem so happy."

Grandpa Zhang picked up the horn cup on the table as if it were a treasure. "Look at this, it's a real gem. I have a sharp eye; I recognized it immediately as an authentic piece from the Tang Dynasty!"

"Wow, this looks pretty good. Dad, how much did you pay for it?"

Zhang Congzhi couldn't tell if the cup was genuine or not; he only cared about the price. He hoped his father wouldn't spend tens of thousands on such a thing, or he would be heartbroken.

The old man held up one finger. "Ten dollars, how about that? I saw a homeless man selling things on the street, a jumbled mess, but several of the items were genuine, though a lot of them were broken and worthless. This horn cup, though, is in good condition."

"Amazing! You're amazing!" Zhang Congzhi gave a thumbs up. Even if he found a piece of scrap metal for ten dollars, he would still praise the old man. The old man just wanted to have a good time.

Old Master Zhang, however, thought differently. He was even more excited and planned to take people to the streets again tomorrow to look for something. He was determined to buy any good items he found. After all, those antiques belonged to his family. How much of them did the foreign devils plunder when they invaded China?

Now that his son says the US economy is bad, he can't resist taking the opportunity to bring his stuff back!

Of course, most of the good stuff is in the hands of the upper class, and Old Master Zhang is not unaware of this. He might as well bring back a little bit, since he has nothing else to do. In this foreign country, there are foreigners everywhere, and there are hardly any people to chat with.
