Chapter 96 The Moon Over the Past
Summers in the north are short. Xie Ning, wearing a simple shirt, stood in front of a rudimentary rice huller, smiling broadly. "Bring the wheat over and let's try it!"
Erniu had been waiting for a while. She carried a bag of wheat and poured it in. Xie Ning simply operated it a few times, and the fresh, fragrant wheat sprayed out from the side. This speed was much faster and less strenuous than when they used a stone mill!
Moreover, this machine can not only remove the shells, but also grind them into powder! It saves so much effort!
Everyone rushed forward to try it out, and Xie Ning was even pushed to the side. When Erniu saw that Xie Ning was sweating, she quickly handed her a towel and put a coat on her. "Sister Changning, don't catch a cold. You always catch a cold when the seasons change. It's getting colder and colder. You should wear your cotton-padded coat starting tomorrow!"
Xie Ning, who was about to refuse because she was sweating, was shivered by the cold wind and stopped refusing, and couldn't refuse anymore.
She still cherishes her health.
In the evenings, they would cook a feast. During this time, Xie Ning and his guards were running around building a smelter, a coking coal plant, and a small hydroelectric power station. One of them was built in the spring, and two wind turbines were built in early autumn. Not many, but they could barely supply these plants.
The agricultural rice huller was invented by Xie Ning after watching Er Niu grind wheat and millet with a stone mill. The principle of this machine is not complicated; it can be cut and welded in the factory.
Dinner was steamed buns, made by Xiao Yang herself, with some millet added. They looked golden and smelled amazing as soon as they came out of the steamer. Xie Ning's supplies were limited, at most enough to supplement Xiao Yang and Er Niu's diet. This time, she let the guards eat with them too, mainly because everyone was losing weight at a visible rate by following her.
After all, riding a horse back and forth, there was no hot food along the way, just dry rations. Xie Ning would occasionally take some things from his space to give him something better to eat, so he lost weight, but he was full of energy and his arm muscles were firm.
With so many people, Xie Ning set up a large iron pot and had Erniu stew the three large pork hocks and five catties of pork that she had bought at the market. She didn't even peel the potatoes; she just washed them and threw them in to stew together. Xiao Yang also fried dozens of eggs and put them in to stew together. The aroma wafted far and wide.
This attracted everyone around, and no one held back; they grabbed whatever they could get their hands on—that's communism, after all.
Xie Ning shook her head, picked up the basin, scooped out most of the meat and eggs, and took several steamed buns before heading to the conference room. She had a meeting to attend that evening, and the leaders and officials at the meeting would naturally have their share. The rest was for them to eat.
The main purpose of this meeting was to discuss how to settle the newly arrived batch of students. Those young people, full of enthusiasm, walked for more than ten days to get here.
Xie Ning sat quietly to the side and listened. She only responded when the leader above asked her to examine the students' academic background.
There are still too few people available for the armaments, and talented people cannot be trained in a day or two.
The evening wind howled, making the window paper flutter loudly. A charcoal brazier burned nearby, and under the dim light, Erniu was patching her and Xie Ning's cotton shoes. Don't let her big and burly appearance fool you; her hands are not only capable of holding a gun, but also a needle!
Moreover, most people here know how to sew, regardless of gender; otherwise, who would mend your clothes if they were torn?
Xie Ning, on the other hand, was engrossed in writing lesson plans and couldn't spare any time during the day. She also couldn't care less about her eyesight these days, so she could only squeeze in time at night. Er Niu could still rub straw sandals in the dark.
After Erniu finished mending the shoes, Xie Ning was still yawning and writing lesson plans. Erniu didn't disturb her, but just squatted on the ground with a stick and wrote. She learned two more words today, and Sister Changning even praised her for being smart. Well, today's word was 'smart'!
She also wanted to use those two words to praise those little devils.
Before Erniu could even write it a third time, the howling of wolves came from afar. Startled, she immediately grabbed the rifle next to her. Even though this place was desolate, there were quite a few wild wolves. Her parents had been killed by wild wolves, and when her grandfather arrived with his men, they only managed to rescue her, who was hiding in a water tank.
Erniu's family were hunters, and having lost her parents at a young age and raised by her grandfather, she was naturally skilled in all kinds of hunting techniques. Just by hearing that sound, she knew what the wolf was howling.
"Sister Changning, please stay here and don't move. I'm going to find Brother Xiaoyang!"
Looking at Erniu's expression, Xie Ning realized she wasn't scared at all; she was clearly excited!
Absolutely! We can't let the meat that's already in our mouths fly away.
Xie Ning pondered to herself whether she should go. She didn't think she had ever fought a wolf before, but when she saw the guards running over to stand at the entrance of her cave, Xie Ning resentfully withdrew her head. She knew it.
These little brats may be young, but they're all incredibly clever. They would never leave her alone, always thinking she was weak and helpless. Even though she personally picked out a bandit's den and a group of White bandits on the way to the smelter, their perception of her remained unchanged.
Xie Ning touched his face. Perhaps because he was thin, his face was pale and he looked pale and weak.
