"It turns out her milk tea shop went bankrupt..."
"No wonder I haven't seen her posting about her spending on WeChat Moments lately."
"Last time he said he was a rich second generation, it was hilarious..."
These words pierced Wang Yan's ears like a knife. Her lips trembled, but she couldn't say a word.
Xi Wanrong waved to the store manager: "What are you still standing there for?"
Wang Yan stared at Xi Wanrong, her eyes almost spitting fire: "Do you think you can be so arrogant with a stolen card? Just wait and see!" After saying that, she turned around abruptly, stomped her high heels heavily on the ground, and slammed the door and walked out.
The glass door behind her shook violently, making a clanging sound.
Xi Wanrong looked at her back, feeling a twisted sense of pleasure welling up in her heart.
——Three years ago, Wang Yan kicked her out of the store in the same way.
She sat back on the sofa and hooked her finger at the head manicurist standing beside her: "Come, give me the most expensive acrylic nails, with diamonds."
The manicurist nodded timidly, carefully took her hand, and began to trim her nails. Xi Wanrong leaned back on the soft sofa, looking at her fingertips that were about to be carefully decorated, and a sneer curled up at the corner of her lips.
This is just the beginning.
—————————————————————
Xi Wanrong stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window in the VIP lounge area on the third floor of the cinema, tapping lightly on the screen of her mobile phone with her fingertips.
Outside the window was the bustling city nightscape, neon lights casting mottled shadows on the glass. However, her eyes were always fixed on the exit of the staff passage.
He is there.
Yang Rui, once a prominent figure in high school, was the student union president and captain of the basketball team. His family owned a chain of hotels and he always wore the latest fashion brands.
Now, he was wearing the cinema's uniform black uniform, with a plastic badge that said "intern" on his chest, and was pushing a cleaning cart towards the lounge.
The corners of Xi Wanrong's mouth curled up slightly.
Three years.
Three years ago, she was the most unremarkable girl in her class, from an ordinary family, with average grades and a quiet personality that was practically invisible. And Yang Rui was the "school hunk" who took the lead in stuffing trash into her desk, deliberately hitting her with a basketball during gym class, and posting unflattering photos of her in the class group chat.
"Xi Wanrong, people like you should just stay at the bottom of society."
"Why would a poor fellow pretend to be noble?"
"Look at her schoolbag. It's worn out, but she's still using it. It's hilarious."
The voice in her memory cut into her nerves like a knife. She took a deep breath, locked her phone, and put it in her pocket.
She wasn't here to watch a movie tonight.
She came to judge.
Xi Wanrong deliberately chose counter No. 3 which was in charge of Lin Rui.
"One iced Americano with double espresso, no sugar." Her voice was soft, but clear enough, like a sharp scalpel that precisely cut through the noisy background noise.
Yang Rui lowered his head, operating the order screen. His newly dyed chestnut-brown hair had a cheap sheen under the overhead light. When he heard the voice, his fingers suddenly froze in mid-air, as if the pause button had been pressed.
He slowly raised his head, and when he saw the person in front of him clearly, his pupils suddenly shrank into two small black dots.
"Xi... Wanrong?" His voice seemed to be squeezed out from his throat, trembling with disbelief.
"Oh, you still remember me?" She tilted her head, a faint smile playing on the corner of her mouth. The movement made the small pearl earring on her earlobe sway slightly. "It seems that Master Yang has a good memory. So, you changed your career to become a barista now?"
Yang Rui's face instantly turned pale, then quickly flushed. His fingers unconsciously clenched the edge of the single-screen, his knuckles turning white from excessive force.
Xi Wanrong noticed a fresh burn scar on his right wrist, as if he had been burned by a coffee machine recently.
"Iced Americano, huh? It'll be ready soon," he said abruptly, almost bumping into his colleague as he turned. The coffee machine hummed dully, steam gushing out, forming beads of sweat on his forehead.
Xi Wanrong's eyes scanned him like an X-ray. The Yang Rui who once wore a slicked-back hairstyle and limited-edition sneakers now had his hair casually ruffled. The collar of his uniform shirt was slightly wrinkled, and there was a faint coffee stain on the cuff.
What surprised her most was that the six-figure watch on his wrist was gone, replaced by a noticeable sunburn mark.
The coffee was quickly ready, but when he handed it to her, Xi Wanrong didn't reach out. Her eyes fell on the condensation on the wall of the cup, and she let out a soft "tsk."
"The temperature is wrong."
"What?" Yang Rui's brows were furrowed into the shape of a "川" character.
"I ordered an iced Americano, and this one's clearly not cold enough." She extended her index finger and gently tapped the side of the glass. "See? There's too little condensation, which means there aren't enough ice cubes. Is your theater's ice machine broken?"
Yang Rui's Adam's apple rolled violently, as if he was suppressing his anger. When he turned around, Xi Wanrong could clearly hear him grinding his teeth. The coffee machine started again, and this time he added half a cup of ice, so roughly that a few pieces of ice splashed onto the counter.
When the second cup was handed to her, Xi Wanrong still didn't take it. She leaned in to smell it, her small nostrils twitching slightly.
"The espresso doesn't have enough crema. Redo it." Her voice was as soft as if she were discussing the weather. "I want a double shot, not pot water."
Yang Rui's jawline was tense, and the veins at his temples were faintly visible. He turned around abruptly, and this time his movements in operating the coffee machine were obviously much more skillful, but Xi Wanrong noticed that his hands were shaking slightly.
