She slowly squatted down, placed the olive oil steadily on the bottom shelf, and then stood up, holding the edge of the shelf. Black spots were still dancing in front of her eyes, and her ears felt like they were stuffed with cotton, making all sounds become distant and blurry.
"Go sit in the lounge for a while, I'll talk to Sister Chen for you." Xiao Li suggested.
Feng Yulan shook her head again: "No, I..." Before she could finish her words, another wave of dizziness hit her. This time, she couldn't keep her balance and stumbled backwards.
The expected pain didn't come. A hand reached out from the side and firmly grasped her arm. It was a slender, white hand with neatly trimmed nails. On the wrist was a mechanical watch that looked quite expensive.
Feng Yulan looked up and met a pair of rare purple eyes.
He was a high school student, about seventeen or eighteen years old, more than half a head taller than her. His black hair fell softly in front of his forehead, making his skin look like snow.
His facial features were so delicate that they didn't look real, especially his violet eyes, which glowed with a strange luster under the fluorescent lights of the supermarket.
Chao Youye frowned, as if dissatisfied with his subconscious action. He quickly loosened his hand and took a half step back, keeping his distance from Feng Yulan.
"Thank you...thank you." Feng Yulan thanked softly, her voice so weak that it was almost inaudible.
Chao Youye didn't respond, but glanced at her coldly with his purple eyes. His gaze lingered on Feng Yulan's sallow face and cracked lips for a second, then moved away.
"Hey, are you okay?" Xiao Li ran over and supported Feng Yulan. "Do you want to go to the infirmary?"
Feng Yulan shook her head: "I'm fine, just a little dizzy."
She secretly glanced at the strange boy and found that he did not leave, but stood a few steps away, looking at her thoughtfully.
"I'll go get you a glass of sugar water." Xiao Li said and ran away.
Feng Yulan leaned against the shelf, trying to catch her breath. She could feel the boy's gaze still on her. It wasn't filled with curiosity or sympathy like the other customers, but with an almost academic observation, like a scientist examining an interesting specimen.
"How long has it been since you last ate?"
Chao Youye suddenly spoke, her voice was unexpectedly cool and pleasant, with a hint of maturity that did not match her age.
Feng Yulan was stunned for a moment, not expecting him to initiate a conversation. She subconsciously touched her abdomen and realized that she hadn't eaten properly in nearly 24 hours.
Zhang Shumin forbad her to eat dinner yesterday, and she only drank half a bowl of porridge this morning because she felt dizzy. At lunch time, she was busy sorting out the inventory and only ate half a piece of dry bread.
"I... don't remember." She answered honestly.
Chao Youye frowned again, this time even more obviously. He pulled out an exquisite metal box from his school uniform pocket and opened it, revealing several beautifully wrapped candies.
"Here." Chao Youye handed the box to Feng Yulan. His movements were a little stiff, as if he was not used to doing this kind of thing.
Feng Yulan stared at the candies, afraid to reach out. They looked too expensive, the wrappers printed in foreign languages, likely imported. Her entire monthly salary couldn't even afford this small box of candy.
"Here," Chao Youye said impatiently, stuffing the box directly into her hands. "Low blood sugar can be fatal."
Feng Yulan carefully took out a candy and returned the box to him. The boy didn't take it, but turned and left. His figure in a black school uniform quickly disappeared among the shelves.
"Hey! Your box..." Feng Yulan wanted to chase after him, but the dizziness came again and she had to hold on to the shelf.
"Have some sugar water." Xiao Li came back and handed her a glass of warm water. "Who was that just now?"
Feng Yulan shook her head and held the candy box in her hand: "I don't know, just one customer."
She peeled a candy and put it in her mouth. Sweetness immediately blossomed on her tongue, not that cheap, cloying sweetness, but a rich, fragrant sweetness mixed with the flavors of fruit and honey.
The sweet taste made Feng Yulan's nose sore. She couldn't remember the last time she had candy.
"Are you crying?" Xiao Li asked in surprise.
Feng Yulan then realized tears were streaming down her cheeks. She hurriedly wiped them away, "No...it's just that the sugar is too sweet."
Sister Chen rushed over upon hearing the news and insisted that Feng Yulan go to the lounge to lie down for a while. Lying on the sofa in the small staff lounge, Feng Yulan quietly counted the candies in the candy box - there were still five, each of a different color and shape.
She hid the box in her uniform pocket like a treasure and decided to eat it sparingly.
When they got home, Zhang Shumin was watching TV in the living room. Feng Yulan tiptoed to the kitchen to cook, but was stopped.
"Stop." Zhang Shu's sharp eyes swept over. "What's in your pocket?"
Feng Yulan's heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively covered the pocket containing the candy box: "Nothing...nothing."
"Take it out!" Zhang Shumin stood up, her voice rising an octave. "Did you steal something from the supermarket?"
"No!" Feng Yulan explained hurriedly, "It was a candy given by a customer..."
Zhang Shumin walked over and roughly pulled the candy box out of her pocket. "A customer gave it to you? What kind of customer would give you something like that?"
She opened the box and sneered, "It's imported, isn't it expensive?"
Feng Yulan twisted her fingers nervously. "It was a high school student... He saw that I was dizzy..."
"Bullshit!" Zhang Shumin slammed the box to the ground, scattering the candy everywhere. "You must have seduced her! Shameless bitch!"
Feng Yulan looked at the scattered candies, her heart aching. Those precious sweetnesses, the boy's rare kindness, had been trampled upon.
