The setting sun in the evening dyed the teaching building blood red. When Chao Youye walked out of the school gate carrying her schoolbag, there were not many people on the campus.
He habitually slung his schoolbag over his right shoulder, his short black hair slightly lifted by the early summer breeze, revealing a pair of cold purple eyes.
These eyes were inherited from the mother he had never met, and they were the part of him that least resembled his father.
He hated the crowds after school, the noisy laughter, and even more so the inevitable physical contact when being jostled by the crowd. So he always waited until everyone had left before slowly walking out of the classroom.
But today, there was a person standing at the school gate.
———Wu Zeyu.
The "little brother" who was three months younger than him was standing obediently under the cherry tree at the school gate, waiting for him. When he saw him come out, he immediately smiled brightly: "Brother!"
Chao Youye paused and his eyes turned cold instantly.
"Why are you here?"
Chao Youye's voice was colder than ice, and his fingers unconsciously clenched the strap of his schoolbag. Several shallow fingerprints were left on the leather strap, representing the anger he had accumulated over the past month.
Wu Zeyu seemed oblivious to his hostility and trotted over with just the right amount of intimacy on his face: "Dad asked me to pick you up and take you home for dinner."
--Home?
Chao Youye almost sneered. What kind of home was that? A pretentious woman, an illegitimate child with ulterior motives, and a father who cared nothing for him.
Ever since my mother left without looking back, the villa has become just a cold building.
"No." He turned and walked away, his pace twice as fast as usual.
Wu Zeyu hurriedly grabbed his wrist: "Brother, don't do this..."
The moment their skin touched, Chao Youye shook his hand away as if she had been burned: "Don't touch me."
Wu Zeyu stumbled, the smile on his face faltering, but he quickly regained his obedient expression: "Then...at least let me walk with you for a while?"
His voice was soft and deliberately flattering, just like the tone he used when acting in front of his father.
Chao Youye gave him a cold look, said nothing, and walked straight ahead. He knew it was useless to refuse, as this illegitimate child was best at pestering.
Wu Zeyu immediately followed, keeping half a step away, like a clingy puppy. His footsteps were light, but they struck Chao Youye's nerves like drumbeats.
"Brother, why are you ignoring me?"
There was a hint of grievance in his voice.
Chao Youye suddenly stopped, turned around and stared at him: "What on earth do you want to do?"
Wu Zeyu blinked his eyes, looking innocent: "I just want to get along well with my brother."
"Forget it." Chao Youye sneered, "Do you think that just because you enter this family, you can really be my brother?"
Wu Zeyu's expression finally cracked, but he quickly returned to his disgustingly obedient self: "Brother, I know you hate me. But Dad hopes that we..."
"Shut up." Chao Youye interrupted him, "Don't mention that person in front of me."
They reached the intersection and the red light came on. Chao Youye stared at the countdown numbers, wishing time would go faster.
Wu Zeyu stood beside him, so close that he could smell the faint scent of citrus perfume on him - it was his father's favorite brand.
"Brother, do you usually go home at this time?" Wu Zeyu suddenly asked.
Chao Youye ignored him.
"I've been observing you for a week and I've noticed you're always the last one to leave school." Wu Zeyu's voice was tinged with laughter. "Are you hiding from someone?"
Chao Youye's pupils suddenly contracted. He turned to look at Wu Zeyu, who still had a harmless smile on his face, but a dangerous light flickered in his eyes.
The green light came on, Chao Youye strode across the road, and Wu Zeyu jogged to catch up.
"Brother, don't walk so fast." He said breathlessly, "Wait for me."
The response he received was a cold "Get lost."
Wu Zeyu suddenly laughed. "Brother looks so handsome when he's angry." His eyes lingered on Chao Youye's face. "Especially those eyes. The purple is almost turning into a deep black."
Chao Youye felt a chill run down his spine. This wasn't the first time he'd heard such strange words from Wu Zeyu, but every time, it still made him feel unwell.
"Pervert." He cursed in a low voice, turned around and walked away quickly.
Wu Zeyu did not follow him, but Chao Youye could feel that gaze always on his back, like a poisonous snake spitting out its tongue, ready to attack at any time.
After turning two blocks, Chao Youye finally returned to the apartment he had rented with the "living expenses" his father had given him. It was much more comfortable than that so-called "home."
The phone vibrated. It was a message from my father:
[Why didn't you answer Zeyu's call? He said you were avoiding him.]
He sneered at Youye and turned off his phone. He should have expected Wu Zeyu to complain; that pretentious guy was best at that.
When she came out of the shower, the doorbell rang. Chao Youye looked through the peephole and saw Wu Zeyu standing outside the door, holding an insulated box in his hand.
"Brother, I know you're home." Wu Zeyu's voice came through the door. "Mom made your favorite sweet and sour pork ribs and asked me to bring them over."
Chao Youye clenched her fists, digging her nails into her palms. What kind of "mother" was that woman? She was just her father's mistress abroad.
"Get lost." he said through the door.
There was silence outside the door for a moment, followed by the sound of an insulated box being placed on the ground.
"Then I'll leave it at the door." Wu Zeyu's voice was still gentle, "Remember to eat it while it's hot."
