She wiped it carefully with a towel dipped in water, fearing that blood stains would be discovered by Zhang Shumin.
There were footsteps outside the door, and Feng Yulan quickly put her foot down. Zhang Shuo pushed the door open and saw her sitting on the toilet lid, frowning.
"Get out, I want to take a shower." he ordered.
Feng Yulan walked out with her head down, but Zhang Shuo grabbed her wrist. His fingers clamped around her bones like iron pliers, causing her to gasp in pain.
"Where did you go today?" Zhang Shuo asked in a low voice, with a dangerous glint in his eyes.
Feng Yulan's heart almost stopped beating: "Really...really went to the pharmacy..."
"Really?" Zhang Shuo pulled out a small piece of paper from his pocket with his other hand. "Then what is this?"
Feng Yulan's eyes widened. It was the shopping receipt she had brought back from the supermarket, with today's date and time clearly printed on it—checkout at 6:15 p.m.
"You got off work a little after six," Zhang Shuo's voice was as cold as ice. "You didn't get home until seven forty. It took you twenty minutes at most to walk back from the supermarket. Where did the rest of the time go?"
Feng Yulan's mind raced. She had to come up with a believable lie, otherwise...
"I...I went for a walk by the river..." Her voice trembled. "I've been so tired lately...I just want to be alone..."
Zhang Shuo stared at her for a long time, then suddenly let go of her hand: "Don't do it again. It's not right for a woman to be out in the dark."
Feng Yulan hurried out of the bathroom as if she had been pardoned. After closing the door, she leaned against the wall, her legs as limp as noodles. At that moment, she truly thought Zhang Shuo was going to kill her.
Back in the bedroom, Feng Yulan found an old wallet from the back of the closet. It was the one she used before she got married, and it was completely empty except for a photo of her and her college classmates.
She carefully opened the interlayer and stuffed in a note she had picked up outside the abandoned factory today - it fell out of Zhang Shuo's pocket when she escaped.
The note contained a string of numbers and a few abbreviations, like some kind of transaction record. Feng Yulan didn't know what it was for, but her intuition told her to keep it.
After hiding her wallet, she sat on the edge of the bed, lost in thought. Moonlight shone through the gap in the curtains, drawing a silver line on the floor.
Feng Yulan stared at the light and suddenly realized that her life had come to a dangerous crossroads.
She knows too much.
About Zhang Shuo, about the abandoned factory, about the white powder... If Zhang Shuo found out that she knew all this...
There were footsteps outside the door, and Feng Yulan quickly lay down and pretended to sleep. Zhang Shuo pushed the door open and came in, steaming wet, lying beside her. In the darkness, his breathing gradually became even.
Feng Yulan kept her eyes open until the early morning when she finally fell asleep.
In her dream, she was running barefoot in an endless corridor, the footsteps of someone chasing her were getting closer and closer...
