She pulled her phone from her pocket, quickly took a picture of the note, and put everything back in place. Just as she closed the drawer, Zhang Shumin turned over and mumbled something in her sleep.
Feng Yulan froze in place, cold sweat soaking her back. She waited until the snoring started again before tiptoeing out of the room and gently closing the door.
Back in her room, Feng Yulan hid her cell phone under her pillow and lay on the bed pretending to sleep.
Her eyes were fixed on the ceiling, but her thoughts drifted to the warehouse address - should she go and check it out? It was too dangerous. But if she didn't see it with her own eyes, she would never know what Zhang Shuo was doing...
At two o'clock in the morning, the entire house was shrouded in silence. Feng Yulan quietly rose, put on her dark coat, and tucked her phone and work ID into her pocket. She wanted to go to the warehouse before Zhang Shuo arrived, at least to confirm what was there.
Just as she was about to open the door, a voice came from behind: "Where are you going?"
Feng Yulan's blood froze instantly. She turned slowly and saw Zhang Shumin standing in the shadows of the corridor, her eyes flashing strangely in the darkness.
"I...I can't sleep...I'll go out for a walk..." Feng Yulan's voice was as thin as a mosquito.
Zhang Shumin took a few steps closer, the moonlight shining on her wrinkled face. "A walk at two in the morning?" She sneered. "To find my son?"
Feng Yulan didn't know how to respond. Admitting it would reveal she knew Zhang Shuo's whereabouts, but denying it would seem even more suspicious.
Unexpectedly, Zhang Shumin suddenly lowered her voice and asked, "What did you see?"
Feng Yulan's heart skipped a beat. "Wha...what?"
"That shoebox," Zhang Shumin's eyes narrowed, "you went through my things."
Feng Yulan's legs began to tremble. She wanted to lie, but facing her mother-in-law's sharp gaze, she found that she couldn't make up a lie: "I... I found a note... the warehouse address..."
To her surprise, Zhang Shumin didn't get angry. Instead, she gave a strange look: "I heard that call, too."
Feng Yulan's eyes widened: "Do you... do you know who Lao Jin is?"
Zhang Shumin shook her head, the wrinkles on her face appearing even deeper in the moonlight. "But I know something's not right with my son lately." She paused. "Are you planning on going to that warehouse?"
Feng Yulan nodded, then shook her head: "It's too dangerous..."
"It's certainly dangerous," Zhang Shumin agreed unexpectedly, "but some things must be confirmed with your own eyes."
The two looked at each other in silence, a strange sense of alliance growing in the darkness.
Finally, Zhang Shumin sighed and said, "Let's talk about it tomorrow. Now go back to sleep and don't let him get suspicious."
Feng Yulan obediently returned to bed, but she was not sleepy at all.
Her mother-in-law's abnormal attitude made her even more uneasy - if even Zhang Shumin felt that the matter was serious, then the truth might be more terrifying than she imagined.
Outside the window, the May night wind shakes the treetops, making a rustling sound, like countless whispering ghosts, telling unknown secrets.
