Chapter 20: The Past Part 3

Ye Qingliu's body began to tremble slightly, cold sweat appeared on his forehead, and the pacemaker gradually began to make a "beeping" sound.

"Dean..."

The man in the white coat called the dean.

"What's wrong?"

The dean came over with an impatient look on his face.

"Dean, this kid seems to be unresponsive."

The smell of disinfectant was like a rusty knife, cutting through her nose and into her brain. Ye Qingliu's eyelashes clung to her eyelids, and it took immense effort to pry them open. The incandescent light from the ceiling blurred her retina into a blurry spot.

He felt a slight tingling sensation at his fingertips, and saw an IV needle inserted into the back of his hand. The transparent infusion tube trembled slightly with his heartbeat, like an icy snake.

"Director..." The nurse's voice trembled, like a piece of paper crumpled by the wind. Ye Qingliu's peripheral vision swept across the monitor. The green curve on the screen was making its final struggle, like a dying fish.

The dean's white coat was blown by the wind, and there was a half-dried blood stain on his cuff. When he unscrewed the glass bottle, the metal bottle cap made a crisp click. The sound reminded Ye Qingliu of the moment when he unscrewed the petri dish in the laboratory.

The syringe pierced his skin with resentful force, and Ye Qingliu could feel the cold liquid rushing through his veins. The ticking of the pacemaker suddenly slowed, like the pendulum of an old-fashioned clock, the last tick dragging on for an eternity, as if being sucked into the abyss.

The moment the red alarm light came on, he saw the dean's pupils suddenly shrink and sweat seeped into the wrinkles at the corners of his mouth. That expression reminded him of a mouse with its tail stepped on.

"Dean, this is bad, the kid has stopped breathing."

"Hurry, hurry, hurry! Save him! This kid is our cash cow, we can't let him die."

The dean looked more panicked than ever before at this moment, and the ugliness of human nature was fully displayed at this moment.

One night when Qingliu woke up again, moonlight crept in through the gaps in the blinds, weaving mottled stripes on the floor.

Ye Qingliu stared at the swaying shadow on the IV stand and listened to the footsteps coming from the end of the corridor.

His fingertips felt the iron wire under the pillow. It was the administrator, Old Chen, who had slipped it to him last Wednesday afternoon when no one was paying attention. The warmth from his palm seemed to still remain on the surface of the wire.

When the wire was bent into a fishhook shape, a small cut was made on his thumb, and blood oozed out, appearing dark red in the moonlight.

The door lock made a slight "click" sound. He held his breath and remembered the three long and two short rhythms of the key turning in the keyhole every time the dean made rounds - those were the first four notes of "Für Elise".

The emergency lights in the corridor flickered, and when Hua Jinyue's figure appeared at the corner, Ye Qingliu thought he was hallucinating.

The hem of her white dress was stained with mud, and her long hair was tied up messily behind her head, but it couldn't hide the light dancing in her eyes. "Brother..."

Hua Jinyue was about five or six meters away from him. She rushed over and hugged Ye Qingliu tightly with her hands, as if she wanted to melt him into her flesh and blood.

The ends of her hair brushed against his chin, bringing with them the scent of grass after rain. Her tight embrace made his ribs in his chest protest, but it was warmer than any painkiller.

She sniffed the familiar scent of her brother, and all the emotions she had been holding back for the past few days burst out at this moment. There was no news from her brother... She felt like she had been abandoned by the whole world.

Hua Jinyue could no longer control her emotions, and her tears fell drop by drop like beads from a broken string.

"Brother...don't do this again..."

Hua Jinyue looked up at the pair of golden eyes that were the same as hers, and spoke word by word.

Ye Qingliu slowly reached out and hugged her, patting her back gently. After seeing Hua Jinyue's tear-stained face, his heart softened.

"No."

This was his answer.

[Baptism Friday]

The people gathered in the church seemed unaware of what was about to happen. The originally quiet crowd suddenly became agitated, and someone shouted at the top of their lungs, "Ahhh, it's on fire!"

The church's stained windows shattered into dust in the flames, and the image of Jesus in the rose window was smoky black, like a weeping saint. The crowd screamed and scattered, some tripping over benches, some knocking over candlesticks, and olive oil burning on the ground, forming strange circles of light.

Ye Qingliu watched the dean rush out of the sea of fire. Half of his face was charred black, and smoke was coming out of his suit jacket. He looked like a walking corpse.

"I never thought you were still alive!

"Do you think you can escape from my grasp?"

As soon as he finished saying this, a confident smile appeared on the dean's face.

Ye Qingliu said calmly: "Don't be so self-righteous, Dean."

"The children in the orphanage disappeared and died for no apparent reason. I'm sure you were involved. The orphanage conducted a large number of inhumane human experiments under the pretext of curing diseases."

"If I hand all of this over to the police, it would be enough to send you, the kind-hearted dean, to jail for life, right?"

After Ye Qingliu finished speaking, he showed a harmless smile, as if he was telling an interesting story to a child.

"What...you actually...how dare you..."

The dean's eyes sunken inwards, and panic instantly spread across his face...his fingertips were trembling because of the child in front of him.

"What on earth do you want to do..."

The dean's voice fell silent, and a great fear enveloped him. He looked into those calm eyes and knelt on the ground.

"You've destroyed everything I have...you devil!" The old dean said tremblingly, pointing at Ye Qingliu.
