Li Zhou stood under the eaves of the convenience store, rain dripping down the broken neon sign and forming muddy puddles at his feet.
The phone's battery was only 3% left, and cracks on the screen were spreading like a spider web. Lin Xiaoman's last message was from three days ago: [Don't contact me, they are monitoring me].
He clenched his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms.
Zhou Hui's tentacles are everywhere - bank accounts have been frozen, rental contracts have been unilaterally terminated, and even the hot food section of the convenience store has a notice saying "System upgrade, supply suspended."
The hunger was gnawing at his stomach like a blunt knife, but he didn't dare use electronic payment, didn't dare scan his face, and didn't dare leave any trace that could be tracked.
The rain was getting heavier and heavier, and the street lights on the whole street suddenly went out, and darkness engulfed the city like a tide.
Li Zhou looked up and heard the roar of an engine in the distance. It was not the hum of a car, but some larger and more dangerous mechanical monster approaching.
He squinted his eyes and saw through the rain a pure black private plane flying low. The red emblem on the wing flashed in the lightning - the Fire Phoenix family emblem.
Gu family’s plane.
Li Zhou's heart skipped a beat. Four years ago, before Gu Yuxiao left the country, he had said to him, "When I come back, I'll take you on my plane."
He had thought it was just a joke at the time, but now...
The plane landed at a private helipad three kilometers away. Li Zhou walked in that direction, feeling the rain pouring into his collar and soaking through his shirt. The cold touch made him shiver.
The barbed wire fence was rusty, and when he flipped over, a bloody mark was cut on his palm, but he ignored the pain and just stared at the behemoth in the middle of the apron.
The searchlight suddenly hit him, and the dazzling white light forced him to raise his hands to block it.
"Stop!" The security guard's shout was drowned out by the heavy rain.
But the next second, another voice came from the darkness, with a careless and lazy tone: "Let him come over."
Li Zhou froze in place.
Amidst the rain, a slender figure approached slowly, holding a black umbrella. The umbrella's edge lifted slightly, revealing a handsome, almost sharp face—Gu Yuxiao.
The 22-year-old head of the Gu family wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his tie hung loosely, and a bone ring on his left ring finger symbolizing his status as the head of the family.
His skin glowed cold white in the rainy night, and the black diamond earring on his right ear flickered with his steps, like stars in the dark night.
He stopped in front of Li Zhou, tilted his umbrella slightly, and shielded Li Zhou from the downpour.
"I haven't seen you for four years," Gu Yuxiao chuckled, his voice low and playful, "How come you're doing so badly?"
Li Zhou opened his mouth, but his throat was so dry that he couldn't make a sound.
Gu Yuxiao's gaze fell on his bleeding palm, his brows frowned slightly, and then he returned to his cynical expression.
He raised his hand and gently brushed the raindrops on Li Zhou's cheek with his fingertips. His movements were almost gentle, but with an irresistible force.
"Get in the car," he said, "and let's talk."
Behind me, the door of the stretched sedan slid open silently, and warm light poured out, like the only salvation in the darkness.
Li Zhou sat on the leather seat, rain dripping down his hair and forming a small puddle at his feet.
Gu Yuxiao took out a bottle of whiskey from the wine cabinet, and the amber liquid swayed in the crystal glass.
"Drink?" He handed over the cup.
Li Zhou didn't answer, but just stared at him: "Why are you here?"
Gu Yuxiao raised his eyebrows, a smile on his lips: "Why, you're not welcome?"
"You know that's not what I meant." Li Zhou's voice was hoarse. "Gu's headquarters is in New York. You haven't been back for three years, and now you suddenly show up in this rainstorm?"
Gu Yuxiao shook his wine glass, and the ice cubes clinked. "I'll come back to clean up the mess."
"What mess?"
"Zhou Hui." Gu Yuxiao casually uttered the name, but his eyes turned cold. "He's been too arrogant lately. He even dared to touch my people."
Li Zhou was startled: "Your people?"
Gu Yuxiao sneered, his eyes wandering over his face: "Why, do you think I will let him bully you?"
Li Zhou turned his face away: "I don't need your help."
"Really?" Gu Yuxiao lazily leaned back in his chair. "Then where have you been sleeping these days? Under a bridge? Or in an underwater cemetery?"
Li Zhou looked up suddenly: "Are you monitoring me?"
"It's not surveillance." Gu Yuxiao chuckled, "It's concern."
"Care?" Li Zhou sneered, "Four years ago, you left the country without a word, and now you suddenly come back and tell me you care?"
Gu Yuxiao was silent for a moment, tapping the cup lightly with his knuckles: "I have my reasons."
"What's the reason?"
"Family matters." Gu Yuxiao's tone became lighter, and he obviously didn't want to talk more.
Li Zhou stared at him and suddenly asked, "Did you come back this time to deal with Zhou Hui, or to..."
"for what?"
"To make fun of me?"
Gu Yuxiao smiled, but there was no warmth in his eyes: "If I wanted to laugh at you, I would have thrown you back into the rain now."
Li Zhou didn't say anything.
Gu Yuxiao sighed, then suddenly reached out, grabbed the back of his neck, and forced him to look straight at him: "Li Zhou, I came back because you deserve a better ending."
Li Zhou's breathing stopped.
Gu Yuxiao let go of his hand and leaned back in his chair, his tone returning to that careless and lazy tone: "So, don't waste my time. Tell me, what did Zhou Hui do to you?"
Li Zhou was silent for a moment, then finally spoke: "He destroyed everything for me."
Gu Yuxiao's eyes darkened, and his fingertips gently stroked the bone ring: "Now, it's our turn to destroy him."
