Chapter 23: Picking Up the Light Years

There is no sun in my sky, it is always dark. But it is not dark, because there is something to replace the sun. Although it is not as bright as the sun, it is enough for me.

With this light, I can treat the night as day. I have never had the sun, so I am not afraid of losing it.

————————"White Night Walk"]

(Ye Qingliu's junior high school days)

The label of a transfer student with good academic performance had already been attached to Bai Zhiye before she arrived in the class. Chalk was scratched on the blackboard, leaving beautiful handwriting on the blackboard.

At the moment when the chalk dust danced in the sunlight, Ye Qingliu smelled the fragrance of lily of the valley.

"Da, da, da—"

The precise rhythm of the little leather shoes tapping on the edge of the podium pulled Ye Qingliu out of his light sleep.

When he looked up with a frown, he saw half of the chalk hitting the blackboard with a "dong" sound. The round white dot happened to fall next to the last stroke of the character "晔", like a small stamp on the name.

"My name is Bai Zhiye."

As the girl turned, the hem of her pleated skirt drew a perfect arc. The sunlight filtered through the gaps in her hair, casting a flowing light spot on the blackboard groove.

Ye Qingliu subconsciously narrowed his eyes - the light was too dazzling, making his eyes sore.

The young master from a wealthy family had seen all kinds of jewel jewelry since he was a child, but at this moment he found that none of them could compare to the pair of smiling eyes on the podium.

"Just sit next to Ye Qingliu." The head teacher pointed to the empty seat by the window.

Bai Zhiye's approach stirred a gust of wind, and Ye Qingliu could smell something mixed with the scent of lime. She put her schoolbag down gently, but the metal buckle still made a "click" sound against the edge of the table.

The sound made Ye Qingliu's ears feel hot. He pretended to organize his books, but in fact he was glancing at his new deskmate out of the corner of his eye: the collar of his uniform shirt was ironed meticulously, and his long black hair was tied up with a dark blue ribbon, hanging on his shoulders and rising and falling slightly with his breathing.

"Please give me some advice." Bai Zhiye suddenly turned his head, with the corners of his lips raised to just the right angle.

Ye Qingliu's pencil snapped. He stared at the girl's outstretched hand. Her knuckles were long, her nails were manicured into lovely, round shapes, and there was a faint trace of pen ink at the base of her thumb.

"Ye Qingliu."

He responded dryly. The moment he touched her, it felt like touching a piece of warm jade. He quickly withdrew his hand and rubbed it on the crotch of her pants.

The cherry blossoms outside the window rustled.

Bai Zhiye discovered that her deskmate was a contradiction.

He would lie down and sleep three minutes after the bell rang, but was always the first to hand in the quiz; he refused to participate in any club activities, but invitations to the astronomy club were piled up like a mountain in his desk; he had a face that could make girls blush, but the way he looked at people was as cold as if he was observing a celestial body.

Just like now, the physics teacher was explaining the law of refraction, and Ye Qingliu fell asleep again, his head resting on his arm. His face was facing Bai Zhiye, and his eyelashes cast fan-shaped shadows under his eyes.

When Bai Zhiye secretly counted to the 47th one, she suddenly met a pair of gray-blue eyes - which reflected the flowing clouds outside the window and her face which suddenly turned red.

"The 48th one." Ye Qingliu whispered, and the hot air he exhaled brushed her earlobe.

Bai Zhiye's mechanical pencil drew a long line on her notebook. She turned her head stiffly and heard her heartbeat getting frighteningly loud.

When I took another peek, Ye Qingliu had already closed his eyes again, but there was a suspicious curve at the corner of his mouth.

(The progress bar is speeding up………………)

After saying goodbye to her friends after school, she was walking home alone when a few thugs appeared at the corner and whistled at her.

"Hey, are you alone?"

The yellow-haired thug blocked the way, his earrings glowing bloody in the sunset.

Bai Zhiye bumped into the wall when she backed away, and the strap of her schoolbag was suddenly pulled.

The smell of cheap perfume hit her in the face, and she saw three figures deep in the alley. One of them was playing with a butterfly knife, and the cold light of metal flashed in front of her eyes.

"Let go!" She raised her foot to kick the other man's knee, but was grabbed by the wrist and dragged into the darker place. The rough wall rubbed her back painfully, and her tie loosened in the struggle.

Huang Mao's laughter was as sticky as a snake's tongue: "Why are you pretending to be so noble? You guys from a private school..."

The voice stopped abruptly.

"Tick, tick, tick--"

Footsteps came from the alley, and Bai Zhiye opened her eyes wide.

The figure in the backlight was tall and slender, his school uniform jacket puffed up by the wind like outstretched wings. Ye Qingliu walked over with one hand in his pocket, his eyes behind the glasses as cold as ice.

"Get lost," he said.

The yellow-haired man spat and swung his butterfly knife open: "Are you looking for death?"

"Brothers, beat him! How dare he ruin our good thing!!"

"Ye Qingliu, be careful!!"

A gangster rushed towards Ye Qingliu with a stick, but he dodged sideways and grabbed his arm and threw him over his shoulder.

The gangster lay on the ground with golden light in his eyes...

At that moment, Ye Qingliu seemed like a savior bathed in brilliant light. He was engraved in her mind and lived in her heart, and she couldn't come back to her senses for a long time.

The gang leader took a long drag on his cigarette and said viciously, "This guy is just pretending. Beat him up! Make him eat some bones."

The gang leader and his followers also rushed forward, and Ye Qingliu pulled Bai Zhiye, who was standing in place, behind him.

The subsequent scenes turned into slow motion in Bai Zhiye's memory: the silver arc drawn by the mirror chain when Ye Qingliu turned sideways, the flying corners of his clothes when he fell over his shoulder, and the teeth-grinding "click" when the bones were dislocated.

Ye Qingliu simply took off his glasses that were stained with blood and gently placed them in her trembling palm.

"Here you go."

She had a pair of glasses in her hand.
