The October breeze, carrying a chill, swirled the golden ginkgo leaves scattered across the campus. Ning Xiwan, wrapped tightly in her beige windbreaker, emerged from the library carrying a stack of heavy professional books.
She had just finished a full day of lab classes, and there was a faint blue tint under her eyes, but it couldn't hide the cool luster in her almond-shaped eyes.
The sunlight filtered through the sparse branches of the sycamore trees, casting dappled shadows on her body. She reached out and tucked a stray strand of black hair behind her ear, revealing her fair profile.
This action caused several boys passing by to look back frequently, but she was completely unaware.
"Oh, isn't this my sister?"
A voice so sweet it made your teeth ache suddenly came from behind. Ning Xiwan paused, her fingertips unconsciously tightening, leaving a few shallow indentations on the cover of the professional book.
She turned around slowly and saw Ning Yunmeng holding Wang Jia's arm, walking towards her with a smile on her face.
Ning Yunmeng had clearly dressed up carefully today. Her latest Chanel camel coat highlighted her slender waist, and her J-high heels sparkled in the sunlight.
The pair of diamond earrings on her earlobes swayed gently with her steps, making people's eyes hurt.
Wang Jia wore a new early autumn collection from a luxury brand, with an exaggerated metal necklace hanging around her neck, looking like a walking luxury display stand.
There was undisguised malice in her eyes as she looked at Ning Xiwan, with a hint of sarcasm at the corner of her mouth.
"Sister, what a coincidence." Ning Yunmeng stopped two steps away from Ning Xiwan, her sweet voice tinged with a hint of deliberate surprise, "I just transferred here. We'll be alumni from now on."
The autumn wind suddenly grew sharper. Ning Xiwan narrowed her eyes, her gaze lingering for a moment on Ning Yunmeng's delicately made-up face, then swept across her arm around Wang Jia.
This action made Wang Jia straighten his back unconsciously, with a smug look on his face.
"Transfer school?" Ning Xiwan's voice was colder than the autumn wind.
Ning Yunmeng's smile froze for a moment, then returned to normal: "Dad felt sorry for me being lonely at the university in the next city, so he asked me to come and keep my sister company."
"Oh, congratulations." Ning Xiwan was too lazy to deal with her and turned to leave.
Wang Jia suddenly stepped in front of her, and the smell of perfume hit her face, making her dizzy: "Ning Xiwan, your sister just got here, and you have this attitude?"
Ning Xiwan's gaze fell on Wang Jia's heavily made-up face. She remembered that it was this man who, along with a group of followers, had deliberately splashed water on her in the cafeteria last time.
"What's wrong?" Ning Xiwan raised the corners of her lips slightly, "Didn't you drink enough?"
Wang Jia's face turned ugly in an instant, and his fingers with bright red nail polish tightly gripped the bag strap.
But she quickly raised her chin and raised her voice an octave higher: "Don't be so arrogant! Yunmeng is now the legitimate eldest daughter of the Ning family. Who do you think you are?"
Students passing by stopped and looked back and forth between the three people with curious eyes.
Some people have already taken out their phones to start recording, while others are whispering about words like "feuds among wealthy families, real and fake daughters".
Ning Yunmeng showed an aggrieved expression at the right time and gently pulled Wang Jia's sleeve: "Jia Jia, don't say that to your sister..."
Her pitiful appearance immediately attracted the sympathetic gazes of several boys.
Ning Xiwan looked at them singing in unison and suddenly found it extremely ridiculous.
"Okay," she shifted the book to her left hand and casually put her right hand into her windbreaker pocket, "then you guys can have fun."
After saying that, she walked towards the teaching building without looking back. Behind her, she heard Wang Jia's angry curses and Ning Yunmeng's hypocritical dissuasion.
In the following days, Ning Yunmeng and Wang Jia were like lingering ghosts, making things difficult for Ning Xiwan at every turn.
On Monday morning, as Ning Xiwan walked into the cafeteria, she saw Ning Yunmeng and Wang Jia sitting in her usual seat, with two identical breakfasts in front of them.
When she was passing by with the tray of food, Wang Jia "accidentally" bumped into her and the hot porridge spilled all over her.
"Oh, I'm so sorry~" Wang Jia covered his mouth exaggeratedly, but there was a vicious light in his eyes.
Ning Xiwan looked at the stain spreading across her white shirt and slowly raised her head. Her eyes were so cold that Wang Jia unconsciously took a step back.
"It's okay." Ning Xiwan said softly, and then poured the water on Wang Jia's head in front of everyone.
Screams echoed throughout the cafeteria.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ning Xiwan was working on her paper in the library.
Just as she was getting to the crucial point, Ning Yunmeng and a group of girls sat next to her and started loudly discussing luxury goods they were going to buy for the weekend. The administrator came over to remind them three times, but to no avail.
Ning Xiwan closed her computer, walked over to Ning Yunmeng, and leaned over to whisper something in her ear. No one heard what she said, but Ning Yunmeng's face turned pale in an instant, and she left with her people in disgrace.
Before handing in homework on Wednesday, Ning Xiwan returned from the bathroom to discover her computer had been tampered with. She checked the document and discovered the last five pages were missing. Looking across the room, she saw Lin Yan proudly waving a USB drive at her.
Ning Xiwan smiled slightly and raised her hand in front of the professor: "Teacher, my homework was maliciously deleted and modified."
Under the gaze of the entire class, she remotely called up the computer's automatic backup. Wang Jia's face turned from red to white, and finally to an unsightly livid color.
The farce finally reached its climax on Friday afternoon.
As soon as Ning Xiwan walked out of the teaching building, she was blocked by Ning Yunmeng, Wang Jia and five other girls on the tree-lined path leading to the dormitory.
The sunlight of late autumn has become thin, and among the swaying shadows of the trees, the expressions of several people look gloomy.
