He quickly lowered his head and muttered softly: "I... I can do it myself..."
Chao Youye said nothing, simply putting the used tissue aside. A barely perceptible smile flashed across the depths of her purple eyes. This kind of awkward shyness was a uniquely cute quality that belonged to Mu Xinrong.
Sweet days flowed like honey. Chao Youye kept his promise, clumsily but with great determination, learning to "chase" Mu Xinrong and "warm" Mu Xinrong.
Early in the morning, when Mu Xinrong rubbed his eyes and walked out of the guest room (he insisted on sleeping in the guest room temporarily, calling it a "probation period"), there would always be warm milk and a delicious breakfast on the dining table.
Sometimes it was toast and fried eggs, sometimes it was hot dumplings. Chao Youye's cooking skills were improving at an astonishing rate.
When Mu Xinrong went to the library to study, Chao Youye would "happen" to sit next to him and quietly read her professional literature.
Occasionally, when Mu Xinrong frowned and stared at a difficult problem, he would lightly touch a step on the draft paper with a pen and whisper a hint, but he would stop there and never interfere.
When Mu Xinrong suddenly realized something, a hint of imperceptible satisfaction flashed across his eyes.
When they took a walk together in the evening, Chao Youye would walk quietly on the side closer to the traffic, with her arm vaguely protecting Mu Xinrong.
When Mu Xinrong excitedly pointed at the sunset in the sky and chattered, he would stop, look in the direction his gaze was pointing, and then give a soft "hmm" to indicate that he was listening and watching.
Mu Xinrong gradually relaxed. He began to get used to secretly hooking Chao Youye's fingers while walking, and to curling up on the sofa next to Chao Youye like a lazy cat when Chao Youye was reading, tucking his feet into Chao Youye's blanket to keep warm.
She was used to rushing over and hugging Chao Youye's waist without warning when she was happy, burying her face in his arms with a fresh scent and rubbing against him.
Chao Youye tolerated his "explosive" little actions without any bottom line.
When Mu Xinrong hooked his fingers, he would cover his hand completely in his palm; when Mu Xinrong put his feet in front of him, he would calmly adjust the blanket to cover his cold feet more tightly.
When Mu Xinrong pounced on him, he would catch him steadily, tighten his arms, hold him tightly in his arms, and rub his chin against the top of his head.
A piece of news was quietly spreading in the Department of Physics and even throughout Guanghua University: Chao Youye, the physics genius who was like a flower on a high mountain and so cold that people kept away from her, now had a "little tail" who was always by her side and had a bright smile - Mu Xinrong.
The look in Chao Youye's eyes when she looked at that "little tail" was so gentle that water could drip out of it, completely different from the distant and indifferent look she showed when she looked at other people.
This huge contrast naturally attracted countless curiosity, envy, and...covetousness.
Mu Xinrong’s “sense of crisis” was triggered for the first time one afternoon.
He went to the main building of the Physics Department to deliver the dropped notes to Chao Youye (when Chao Youye was leaving, Mu Xinrong pestered her and kissed her a few more times, and she was rarely distracted).
As soon as I walked to the door of the small seminar room that Chao Youye usually used, I saw a familiar figure - Cheng Yi.
Cheng Yi is another well-known talented woman in the Department of Physics. She has excellent academic performance, a cool temperament, and beautiful looks. She is a goddess in the eyes of many people.
She had exchanged views with Chao Youye many times in academic discussions, and they admired each other's talents.
Mu Xinrong also vaguely knew that she had some feelings for Chao Youye, but Chao Youye was cold and distant at the time, and Su Wanqing also kept a proper distance.
Chao Youye and Cheng Yi were the only two people in the seminar room. Chao Youye had his back to the door, looking down at the documents spread out on the table.
She stood slightly closer to him, leaning forward slightly, her finger pointing at something on the document, whispering something. A few strands of her long hair fell down, almost touching Chao Youye's arm.
From Mu Xinrong's perspective, the two of them seemed... somewhat close.
Mu Xinrong's footsteps froze in place. An unfamiliar, sour, and burning feeling suddenly washed over him, like a jar of aged vinegar being overturned, the sourness rushing straight to his head.
His fingers gripping the notebook tightened unconsciously, his knuckles turning slightly white.
At this moment, Cheng Yi seemed to have finished speaking, raised his head, and his eyes inadvertently swept across the door, just meeting Mu Xinrong's gaze.
She was slightly startled, then gave a polite yet inquiring smile and nodded slightly.
Chao Youye also noticed it and turned around.
When he saw Mu Xinrong at the door, his originally focused and slightly cold eyes softened instantly, like a frozen lake melted by the sun.
"Mu Xinrong?" he called, his voice carrying a barely perceptible warmth.
Mu Xinrong took a deep breath, suppressed the jealousy churning in his heart, forced a bright smile on his face, pushed the door open and walked in: "Chao Youye! You forgot to bring your notes!"
His voice was clear and with deliberate intimacy. He walked straight to Chao Youye and stuffed the notes into his hand. His movements were so natural as if they had been rehearsed thousands of times.
Then, as if he had just seen her, he smiled innocently: "Senior Cheng is here too? Did I interrupt your discussion?"
His body leaned towards Chao Youye imperceptibly, his arm almost touching Chao Youye's arm, forming a small, exclusive intimate space.
Cheng Yi's gaze lingered for a moment on Mu Xinrong's arm, which was clinging to Chao Youye. His eyes flickered slightly, and then he regained his composure. He smiled and said, "It's okay, we just finished our discussion. Junior Brother Mu, do you have something to ask Senior Brother Chao? Then I won't bother you for now."
She packed up her things, her posture still graceful and elegant.
"Goodbye, senior sister." Mu Xinrong smiled with her eyes curved, but her tone carried a subtle hint of farewell.
