It was a paper cup with the coffee shop logo printed on it. The cup wall was thick and could block most of the heat.
The mouth of the cup is sealed, and wisps of white steam escape from the straw, carrying with them the rich aroma of milk and the sweet fragrance of cocoa.
Sun Guixiang was completely stunned.
She looked at the drink in front of her that was emitting tempting heat and sweet flavor, and then looked at the young man in front of her with an indifferent expression and cold temperament. Her turbid eyes were filled with great confusion and disbelief.
She shook her head subconsciously, her cracked lips moving: "No...no need...I...I'm not thirsty..." Her voice was so weak that it was almost blown away by the wind.
Ye Qingliu still didn't say anything, just kept handing out the cup.
There was no sense of compulsion in his movements; he just held it up calmly and stubbornly.
Those gray-blue eyes looked at her quietly through the lenses. There was no charity or pity in his eyes, only an almost pure logical judgment - she needed heat.
His silence carried an invisible pressure, but also a strange sense of security.
Sun Guixiang looked at the boy's handsome but expressionless face, and saw his bony, clean, slender hands holding the cup of hot drink steadily. The words of refusal got stuck in her throat.
An indescribable feeling of bitterness and longing welled up in her. She was too cold, her stomach empty.
The heat and sweet aroma of that cup of something was a fatal temptation to her.
Finally, she stretched out her trembling hand, and with her skinny fingers, she carefully and a little fearfully took the heavy cup of hot drink.
The scorching temperature instantly passed through the paper cup to her cold palm, making her unable to help but let out a sigh of satisfaction.
"Thank you...thank you..." She lowered her head, her voice choked, and turbid tears welled up in her eyes.
Ye Qingliu watched the old man take the hot drink before withdrawing his hand. His movements were smooth and natural, as if he had just completed a simple action instruction.
He did not respond to the thanks, his eyes calmly swept over the thin old cotton jacket of the old woman, and finally fell on the tattered cloth bag that she placed at her legs and held tightly.
His gaze lingered for a moment on a corner of an unusually neatly folded paper that was barely visible from the edge of his pocket.
The edges of the paper were badly worn, obviously having been rubbed and checked countless times.
Sun Guixiang keenly noticed the boy's gaze, her body tensed instantly, and almost subconsciously, she used her other hand to press down on the cloth bag, covering the exposed corner of the paper tightly!
Her actions were filled with an almost desperate desire to protect and a huge sense of shame.
She lowered her head, not daring to look at Ye Qingliu again, and her hands holding the hot drink were shaking slightly.
Ye Qingliu took in her reaction. Within the depths of his gray-blue eyes, there seemed to be extremely subtle ripples, too fast to be captured.
He didn't ask any further questions, nor did he show any sign of inquiry. He simply sat down on the steps next to Sun Guixiang, at a polite distance.
This action made Sun Guixiang look up in shock again.
She looked at this young man, wearing an expensive cashmere coat and with a cool demeanor like a lone moon on a snowy mountaintop. He actually sat down on these cold, dusty steps without any hesitation, right next to her? This was completely beyond her comprehension.
Ye Qingliu didn't look at her, but just put the leather briefcase in his hand beside him, leaned back slightly, and leaned against the cold wall.
He tilted his head and looked at the flashing neon sign across the street. His gray-blue eyes were reflected with colorful lights and shadows, but he remained calm and distant, as if all the noise around him had nothing to do with him.
He just sat there quietly, like a waiting traveler or a silent guardian.
His presence alone brought a strange sense of security. No words of comfort, no deliberate attempts at intimacy, just sitting there quietly, accompanying me.
This silent, distanced companionship is like an invisible barrier, temporarily isolating us from the invasion of the cold wind and the gazes of passers-by.
Sun Guixiang held the cup of piping hot cocoa and sipped it in small sips.
The sweet and thick liquid slid down her dry throat, carrying its scalding temperature all the way to her cold stomach, dispelling the chill from her limbs and strangely soothing her tense nerves.
She secretly glanced at the boy beside her. The lines of his profile were delicate and stern. His silver-rimmed glasses shone with a cool luster under the light. His long eyelashes drooped, hiding most of the emotion in his gray-blue eyes.
He was as quiet as a painting blending into the background.
Time flows slowly in silence.
The wind was still cold, but this small corner on the steps seemed to have a hint of imperceptible warmth because of the boy's presence.
After drinking a cup of hot cocoa, Sun Guixiang felt that she had regained some strength and the trembling in her body subsided a lot.
She looked at the empty paper cup in her hand, then at the still silent boy beside her, her heart filled with gratitude and an indescribable emotion.
She knew it was time to go.
"Little...little friend..." She mustered up her courage, her voice still hoarse, but a little steadier than before, "Thank you...for this...something."
She paused, as if she wanted to say something, but ultimately lowered her head awkwardly, "I...I have to go."
Ye Qingliu turned his head, his gray-blue eyes falling calmly on her face.
He didn't say anything, just nodded slightly, the movement was so small that it was almost invisible.
Sun Guixiang held onto the cold wall and tried hard to stand up.
She had been sitting for too long and was weak, so her legs were numb and powerless. Just as she was halfway up, her vision went black again, her body swayed uncontrollably, and she almost fell.
