Mu Xinrong had just finished his porridge and was clearing the dishes when there was a knock on the ward door.
Then, the chief physician in a white coat came in with two assistants and the head nurse. It was time for routine ward rounds.
The doctor carefully examined Chao Youye's condition, asked about the pain, and checked her finger reactions (still only the slightest tremor in her thumb). Then, the head nurse stepped forward and carefully examined the skin around the edge of the plaster.
When the head nurse's fingers accidentally pressed the edge of the plaster near the shoulder blade, a sharp, electric-like pain suddenly shot up from deep in her left arm.
"Ugh!" Chao Youye was caught off guard, his body suddenly stiffened, and a suppressed groan of pain came from his throat!
His face turned pale instantly, and cold sweat immediately broke out on his forehead. His uninjured right hand tightly grasped the bed sheet beneath him.
"Chao Youye!" Mu Xinrong's heart tightened instantly. He rushed to the bedside with his hands hanging in the air. The blood drained from his face, leaving only fear in his eyes.
He looked at the doctor anxiously: "Doctor!"
"Don't be nervous!" The doctor immediately signaled the head nurse to stop. "Maybe you touched a sensitive nerve point."
He observed Chao Youye's reaction, "It hurts? Is it a stinging pain?"
Chao Youye gasped rapidly and clenched her teeth. After several seconds, the severe pain slowly subsided.
He loosened his grip on the bed sheet, his voice weak and hoarse from the effort he had put in. "...a sharp sting...like...an electric shock...now...it's better..."
"This is a common phenomenon during nerve recovery," the doctor explained. "We'll adjust your analgesia. Try to avoid sudden force or pressure on the left side of your body. Get some rest."
He turned to Mu Xinrong and said, "Family members should also pay attention and be gentle when caring for them."
Mu Xinrong nodded vigorously: "I understand! I will be careful! Absolutely careful!"
The doctor gave a few more instructions and then took the patient away.
Chao Youye closed her eyes and leaned on the pillow. Her face was still pale and her brows were slightly furrowed because of the remaining pain.
"Does it still hurt?" Mu Xinrong's voice was cautious. He took a warm, wet towel and gently wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
Chao Youye slowly opened her eyes and met his worried gaze. He shook his head gently: "Much better. Don't worry, it's just an accident."
He put down the towel, sat down beside the bed, and gently covered Chao Youye's uninjured right hand with his left hand, using his own temperature to warm his still cold fingers.
"It's all my fault... I didn't notice it just now..." His voice was muffled and full of self-blame.
"It's none of your business." Chao Youye interrupted him immediately, holding his slightly cold fingers with her backhand, and applying a little force, "The doctor also said it was an accident. You've done very well, Xinrong."
He paused, looking at Mu Xinrong's still tense expression and the dark shadows under his eyes, knowing that he was also reaching his limit.
"Xinrong," he said, his voice slowing down and coaxing, "I'm a little tired and want to sleep for a while. You should go and rest for a while, okay? Just on the accompanying bed next to us."
He pointed to the single bed in the corner.
Mu Xinrong immediately shook his head: "I'm not sleepy! I'll be here to watch over you!"
"Be obedient." Chao Youye's tone was undeniably strong, yet shrouded in tenderness. "With you here, I can't sleep well. Go lie down for a while. I need you to take care of me energetically. Go and rest."
Mu Xinrong opened his mouth and wanted to refute, but when he met Chao Youye's deep and concerned eyes, saw the fatigue between his brows, and thought about his slightly dizzy head and the dull pain in his right arm... he was indeed very tired.
"...Well... okay." He finally gave in. "I'll just sleep for a while. If you need anything, you must call me! Now!"
"Yes, definitely." Chao Youye promised.
Mu Xinrong walked to the accompanying bed, looking back every few steps, took off his shoes, and slowly lay down on it.
He lay on his side, facing Chao Youye, his eyes still wide open, staring at the person on the bed without blinking.
Chao Youye also turned her head to meet his gaze. He blinked slowly.
Perhaps it was because his tense nerves finally got a moment of respite, or perhaps it was because Chao Youye's silent gaze had soothing power, Mu Xinrong's eyelids became heavier and heavier.
In less than five minutes, his even and deep breathing could be heard in the quiet ward as he fell into a deep sleep.
After confirming that Mu Xinrong was asleep, Chao Youye slowly withdrew his gaze.
He didn't fall asleep immediately. He just tilted his head slightly, his eyes falling on his phone on the bedside table.
Just then, there were two very light knocks on the ward door.
Immediately, the door was pushed open a crack. A man in a black suit, with a lean build and a stern face, silently slipped in. He was Ling Yue, Chao Youye's trusted bodyguard and special assistant.
Ling Yue quickly scanned the ward and saw the sleeping Mu Xinrong, so he walked even more lightly.
He walked to Chao Youye's bedside, bowed slightly, and lowered his voice to a very low level, with absolute respect and solemnity: "Mr. Chao."
