In the VIP ward on the top floor of Sacred Heart International Hospital, time seems to be filtered into a thicker and slower fluid.
The afternoon sun slanted through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, warm spots of light on the polished floor.
Sun Guixiang sat on the soft stool that was almost stained by her sitting. Her hunched back seemed a little straighter than before, and her skinny hands were pressed tightly on the faded blue print package on her knees.
She raised her eyes from time to time, glanced quickly at the young man who was reading quietly on the hospital bed, and then immediately lowered them, as if confirming something, or as if gathering the courage to speak.
Ye Qingliu was half leaning against the raised headboard of the bed. His blue and white striped hospital gown made him look still pale, but the heavy sickness between his brows seemed to have been somewhat dispelled by the warmth of the past few days, revealing a somewhat handsome outline.
Silver-rimmed glasses were perched on his high nose bridge, and the gray-blue eyes behind the lenses calmly focused on a thick foreign book in his hand. His fingertips occasionally turned the pages, his movements smooth and precise.
The ward was very quiet, with only the slight rustling of pages turning.
Finally, Sun Guixiang seemed to have made up her mind. A dry sound came out of her throat, breaking the silence: "Little...little friend..."
Ye Qingliu turned his head, his eyes calmly falling on her face through the lenses, asking silently.
There was no expression on his pale face, but his gray-blue eyes were like a calm lake, clearly reflecting Sun Guixiang's figure.
When Sun Guixiang saw that calm gaze, the courage she had just mustered up lost a little, and she subconsciously hugged the package in her arms tighter.
She swallowed and tried to make her voice sound more natural: "Today... today I didn't make mung bean cakes..."
She paused, with a hint of flattery in her cloudy eyes.
"That... that nurse in white said... that you can... have a little bit of cream cake now? As long as it's not too sweet?"
As she spoke, she carefully and with a bit of eagerness, as if she were presenting a treasure, untied the blue print package in her arms.
This time, what was revealed was no longer the familiar aluminum lunch box, but a small, white cardboard snack box with a circle of exquisite and simple vine patterns printed on the lid.
She held her breath, and opened the lid of the box very slowly and solemnly, as if she was opening a dusty treasure.
An extremely rich and elegant blueberry sweet aroma, mixed with the rich frankincense unique to high-quality animal cream, instantly filled the entire ward like a gentle wave.
Inside the box, quietly lay an extremely delicate and small round cake. Only the size of a fist, yet as beautiful as a piece of finely crafted porcelain.
The bottom layer is a fluffy and soft chiffon cake base baked to an even color. It is covered with a thick layer of white and delicate animal cream that looks like a fresh cloud.
The top of the cream is dotted with plump, round, deep purple sapphire-like fresh blueberries.
Each blueberry is covered in a layer of natural white fruit frost, shimmering with a mysterious and alluring luster in the sun. Between the blueberries, there are also some golden and crispy almond slices sprinkled.
The cake also seemed to be covered with a thin layer of translucent blueberry jam glaze.
Sun Guixiang stared at the cake with her cloudy eyes without blinking, as if she was afraid that it would melt in the next second.
Her skinny fingers carefully protected the edge of the box, and she handed it to Ye Qingliu as if offering a treasure, her voice filled with strong anticipation and a hint of trepidation: "I... I asked Xiao Li... the nurse, to help me buy the most... the most expensive blueberry cake from that supposedly excellent pastry shop downstairs!
"I specifically told Xiao Li to pick the sweetest, freshest blueberries, and to use animal cream for the cream, no vegetable cream at all! I also reduced the sugar by half! The chef said... that these blueberries are sweet and refreshing without being greasy, with a hint of tartness, which is appetizing and easy to digest... Would you... would you try it?"
She finished speaking in one breath and nervously watched Ye Qingliu's reaction, afraid that he would frown or say "no".
Ye Qingliu's gaze slowly moved from Sun Guixiang's wrinkled and expectant face to the small white snack box that exuded elegant temptation.
Deep in his gray-blue eyes, a subtle ripple flashed across his face, like an undercurrent surging beneath the ice.
The air seemed to freeze for a few seconds.
Sun Guixiang held her breath and felt her heartbeat pounding in the silent ward.
Finally, Ye Qingliu nodded very slightly, almost imperceptibly.
That tiny movement looked like a grand explosion of fireworks in Sun Guixiang's eyes.
"Oh! Good! Good!" She was so happy that her voice rose a little, with a strong country accent, and she hurriedly held the snack box closer.
Her skinny fingers tried clumsily to pick up the delicate little fork that came in the box, her movements slow and slow, typical of an elderly person.
However, just as her fingertips were about to touch the small silver fork, she paused.
She raised her head, her cloudy gaze passed over the snack box and fell on Ye Qingliu's hand resting on the dark velvet carpet.
The hand was still pale and slender, but compared to the icy touch a few days ago, it now had a noticeable warmth.
More importantly, she saw the pair of thin silver-rimmed glasses on his nose.
"Little...little friend..." Sun Guixiang's voice was a little coaxing, and her cloudy eyes were filled with pure, unquestionable kindness.
"Eating cake with glasses on... wouldn't it be inconvenient? It would...it would get greasy..."
