Extra 13: Effective Solace

"Mother-in-law..."

It’s still two words.

Gently and softly.

Like a lotus seed wrapped in honey, it was carefully and accurately thrown into the depths of Sun Guixiang's heart, which was churning with jealousy and anger.

All the anger, all the arrogance, all the grievances and possessiveness instantly collapsed and disappeared without a trace in front of this soft and sticky "mother-in-law" with complete dependence and silent pleading.

Sun Guixiang let out a short, nasal sob from her throat.

Her skinny hand, which was covering the back of Ye Qingliu's hand that was pinching her sleeve, tightened unconsciously, as if grabbing the only piece of driftwood.

The blush on Sun Guixiang's face quickly faded, and the harshness and stubbornness were replaced by a huge, almost aggrieved softness. Her turbid eyes were instantly filled with tears, which fell on the backs of their folded hands with a plop.

"Hey..." She replied vaguely, her voice trembling. Reason, face, and "my little friend" all became insignificant in the face of this "mother-in-law."

In her eyes and heart, the only thing left was the young man in front of her who was comforting her in the most clumsy yet most effective way.

The fat aunt rubbed her wrist and watched the dramatic scene in front of her - Sun Guixiang was ferocious one second, and the next second she was moved to tears by the child calling her "grandma". In an instant, she turned from a lioness protecting her cubs into a wronged old child.

The grievance and anger in her heart were like a punctured balloon, deflated in an instant, leaving only a helpless laugh and a hint of relief.

"Alright, alright..." The fat aunt waved her hand, her voice still a little nasal, but she was no longer angry. Instead, she smiled helplessly.

"Sister Sun, I'm afraid of you! This precious child of yours is a precious treasure, a precious treasure, you can't touch her! You can't touch her! From now on, I'll stay eight feet away from her, okay?"

As she spoke, she actually took a few steps back and made an exaggerated "keep distance" gesture.

Grandma Zhang quickly tried to smooth things over, smiling and taking the fat aunt's hand: "Alright, alright! It's all because of the child! Sister Sun is also distressed! Don't take it to heart, fat girl! Come on, try the new tea I brought!"

The atmosphere softened with good-natured laughter and banter. The awkward ice was broken, but a subtle touch lingered in the air.

Seeing that Sun Guixiang had calmed down, Ye Qingliu loosened his grip on her sleeve.

He said nothing, but just bent down silently, straightened the small winnowing basket that Sun Guixiang had knocked over in her excitement, and squatted down again.

Very carefully, one by one, he picked up the scattered vegetables on the ground and put them back into the winnowing basket.

Sun Guixiang looked at the child squatting on the ground picking vegetables, and his lowered profile that looked particularly soft in the sunlight. The remaining awkwardness and sourness in her heart were completely replaced by a warm and full feeling.

Her skinny hand unconsciously stroked the softest piece of fabric on the inside of her cuff that had been gently pinched. There seemed to be a hint of cool, soft touch left there, like a brand, or more like a silent oath.

Sun Guixiang sniffed, wiped the tears from her face with her sleeve, squatted down, and picked vegetables with Ye Qingliu.

The golden glow of the setting sun generously fills the courtyard, giving every leaf and every person a warm golden edge.

Ye Qingliu put the last vegetable into the winnowing basket and stood up.

He didn't look at anyone, but walked to the water tank, scooped up a bucket of clean water, and carefully washed the dirt off his hands.

Drops of water slid down his cold white wrist, sparkling with tiny lights in the sunset.

Sun Guixiang held the dustpan and watched his silhouette as he washed his hands. The evening breeze brought the faint hustle and bustle of the distant Riverside Park.
