Chapter 18 Mr. Lu is a bit possessive of you.
Lan Zhe, with his usual aloof demeanor, pushed open the conference room door. He glanced around and saw that several senior executives hadn't arrived yet; he wasn't the last one.
Noticing that he was being stared at a lot, Lan Zhe sat down to Lu Xiwen's left and looked at Pei Wu across from him with a questioning look.
Pei Wu kindly pointed to the corner of her mouth.
Lan Zhe wiped it with his thumb—oh, it was just some residue. To be honest, the crispy pastry Pei Zhu put in the rice ball was really delicious, with a particularly rich and pure meaty aroma.
Lu Xiwen's gaze was calm as he looked at the two of them. Soon, everyone had arrived.
The hotel project in cooperation with Banluo has been finalized, and the work handled by Pei Wu and Lan Zhe is basically problem-free. The closer one is to Lu Xiwen, the less one dares to make mistakes, while other positions are not necessarily so. Although the annual summary report looks good, it does not prevent Lu Xiwen from picking out a few typical cases in his nitpicking and scolding them without any ambiguity.
Pei Wu looked down at her notebook, looking just like a student who, even if she wasn't the one being punished by a strict teacher, would still be cautious and careful.
"Like I said before, if someone can't do it, replace them. I told you about the workload before you joined Changrong. I'm not a landlord; I don't have the habit of taking advantage of labor. But some people are so bad that I feel like I'm losing out by paying them." Lu Xiwen called out a few names, then changed his tone and asked Lan Zhe, "Has the venue for the annual meeting been booked?"
Lan Zhe: "It's still the Xiang Sheng Hotel from last year."
"OK."
The meeting ended, and everyone left at lightning speed.
Pei Wu tidied up the things in front of her, and after Lan Zhe left, she asked Lu Xiwen what he wanted to eat for lunch.
Lu Xiwen, still looking grim after his outburst, said, "Just grab whatever you need from the cafeteria."
"Okay." Pei Wu followed Lu Xiwen back to his office, brewed him a cup of honeysuckle tea to cool him down, and added some honey. The taste was sweet but not cloying, just like a gentle breeze blowing from his throat into his internal organs. Lu Xiwen forgave the world for three minutes.
The bonuses will be finalized before the annual meeting. Just as Pei Wu said, Chang Rong is not stingy when it comes to this. Looking at the five-figure sum that arrived in her account, Pei Wu did a quick calculation of her salary for the past few months and immediately smiled.
"You seem to be in a good mood, Assistant Pei." Lan Zhe walked in.
“Yes,” Pei Wu added, “I’m planning to move to a different place.”
Where to buy?
Pei Wu gave a dry laugh, "If I can't afford to buy, I'll rent."
Lan Zhe didn't dwell on the topic. He came from a wealthy family and owned a large apartment in the city center before graduating. He was also an A-level Alpha, and his life had been smooth sailing. It was only when the topic of life came up that Lan Zhe was slightly surprised to realize that Pei Zhu was a Beta.
Beta users will not receive a lot of resources.
Rainbow City has experienced several days of heavy snowfall, signaling that the northern city has finally entered the cold winter.
Pei Wu found summer too stuffy, but winter wasn't much better; he always had to wear several layers to maintain his pitiful body temperature.
When Pei Wu opened the door in the early morning and felt the cold wind stinging her cheeks, she huddled in her scarf and for a moment even considered asking for leave.
Of course, it's just a thought. As usual, Pei Wu arrived at the company ten minutes early to prepare coffee or tea for Lu Xiwen, along with the breakfast he made, and finally secretly fed Lan Zhe a meal.
"Speaking of which," Lan Zhe said, taking a bite of a fragrant roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), the crisp green peppers stimulating his taste buds. Having spent so much time with Pei Wu, Lan Zhe had become less particular and mumbled, "Don't you think President Lu is a bit too possessive of you?"
Pei Wu stopped in her tracks upon hearing this.
Lan Zhe was still chewing away.
"Blue Assistant, how did you come up with such a scary idea?"
"Are you misunderstanding something?" Lan Zhe swallowed what was in his mouth. "It's just the literal meaning of possessiveness. Top-tier people have a habit of claiming territory. What I mean is that President Lu considers you his personal property."
Pei Wu's heart skipped a beat: "How do you know?"
"You don't know?" Lan Zhe perked up. "Yesterday, Vice President Qin wanted to borrow you to go to the branch office for a few days. As soon as he asked, Manager Liu also mentioned it. President Lu refused without saying a word. You didn't see his face. He looked like someone had robbed him."
Pei Wu was away at the time, and he said slowly, "No way, I'm President Lu's assistant after all. You're definitely overthinking it."
"Nonsense," Lan Zhe said. "You don't have anything to do lately, what's the big deal about a temporary transfer?"
After a long day, Mr. Zhang praised Pei Wu to the skies. Although Lan Zhe had cleaned up the mess, everyone had witnessed Pei Wu's ability to handle things. Not to mention, she was quite skilled at accounting and writing proposals. Naturally, everyone wanted to hire her, but they couldn't compete with Mr. Lu. They could only borrow her, but even that was out of the question.
Pei Wu still felt it was impossible.
But Lan Zhe's words struck him like something fiery, sending a tremor through his very being.
"You go in first." Lan Zhe waved his hand. "I'll go in after I finish eating."
Pei Wu didn't believe Lan Zhe, but his grasp of the underlying tensions was spot on. Lu Zong's gaze carried a primal sense of expulsion. Lan Zhe analyzed as he ate. Of course, this situation would ease as their relationship grew closer, since the top-tier company didn't want to see any covetousness before they had obtained it...
Lan Zhe slowed down his chewing speed, wondering what he had been thinking about.
For the annual meeting, Pei Wu sent his best suit to be cleaned and ironed in advance, and picked it up on the morning of the meeting.
This outfit fit him better than usual, and he had to wear a fitted coat over it. Luckily, it had a fur collar, otherwise Pei Wu's own scarf wouldn't have matched the outfit. Before leaving, he picked up his long-unused hairspray and tried it on his head a couple of times, but in the end, he gave up. He just couldn't stand using that stuff.
Seeing that it was almost time, Pei Wu drove to the hotel.
Traffic was congested, and the waiting time at the traffic lights was long. Pei Wu glanced at his watch and realized he was already late, but he was alone, so it shouldn't be a problem.
After parking the car and entering the lobby, Pei Wu heard the joking voice of the R&D department head, "Assistant Pei, you're so handsome, but can't you just be handsome openly? Your face is all hidden in your collar."
"Isn't it cold?" Pei Wu replied with a smile, "Unlike you, you're all warm-blooded."
Oh right, Pei Zhu is a Beta, unlike Alphas who are resistant to cold. Once an Omega is marked and absorbs enough pheromones, an invisible barrier forms around their body, making them less afraid of the cold.
But Pei Wu's condition was purely a side effect of her illness not being fully cured.
Unfortunately, it's highly likely that he'll never get better.
Pei Wu walked into the inner hall with the head of the R&D department. The heat that hit him made Pei Wu feel comfortable. When he looked up, amidst the intermingling figures, he saw Lu Xiwen standing in the back, looking at him.
It was as if the other party had been waiting for a long time.
Pei Wu sighed, feeling that she should listen to Lan Zhe talk less about "possessiveness".
